Bedford is not the answer for us.

He's another that is just too inconsistent at AFL level. Elite speed but goes missing and questionable foot skills. I don't see how he improves our forwardline going into next year.

Chandler is much more well rounded and whilst doesn't have the pace he has Bedord covered in just about every other facet.

Agree JG just think Chandler is harder at it than Bedford even if he doesn't have the same speed, able to win more of his own ball.. Having said that perhaps Bedford can still be coached on to better use the attributes that he has.

I reckon Chandler should go better as a small defender minding the opp small player and would look good with pace on his beautiful left foot straight ahead.
Corners and small amounts of room take his skill away at the top level and he is not a consistent goal kicker really.

Csn always be shifted forward for a cameo if needed.

Bowser  on a wing or half forward  gives us more class nearer the goals.

Ess is the front runner and they have picks:  4, 22, 40, 58, 76.  Can't see it being 22 more likely 40.

Hopefully, Diodoro doesn't offer something stupid like 58 and slows down getting the deal done.

Ask for swap for James Stewart or Aaron Francis.
Reckon we could make a player out of either one.

If they cannot get a kick at essendrug what makes you think they are more than Casey talents? Rather keep Bedford.

You know a change of environment is always a chance of players fitting in and relishing different systems and culture.

Stewart would be a good 3rd/4th defender or handy FP goalkicker and Francis a HB flanker good overhead and skilful msybe even a half forward.

Both are better players ( ie have more ability than they are showing at Tulla.)

I think  it's better getting a "readymade player " snd working with him for say a 3Rd rounder as we already have about 6/8 young potentials who need to start grabbing the spots ASAP

I think it is very important to keep bedford for a couple more years.  there is a real chance that Port offer Kossie a massive deal at the end of next year.   i hope the the dees make sure that kossie is comfortable in melb and want to stay with the Dees which he loves.  but in the case that the offer is to much for him to knock back, we need bedford to fill that position!

Hi Toby, you’re about to waste your career playing in the sub vest in your most important developmental years, can you stay longer just in case Kossie leaves?

I can’t imagine that goes down well.

I hope Toby stays, he has skills that our list is lacking, speed and X factor. I hope he breaks in to our AFL team again next year. Wet congested VFL footy doesn’t suit him, he had some great games for us this year in the AFL, just needs to learn to stay in the game for four quarters.
The one thing that may encourage him to stay is that Essendon is an absolute basket case. It’s a risk to go there atm and several of their stars are making noises about leaving, particularly if Jabs Hird gets the gig.

Why would a club ever tell a player that?

You do whats best for the club,  and if that is keeping him then that's what you try do!  You say to him we think you can make our best 22, have a big off season and make the position yours!

clubs don't tell players truths they say what they need to higher/lower price, if Toby doesn't buy it then you move on.  players are always told we think you can be this or that

never promise, but dangle the carrot. hopefully he actually does grab it and forces his way in

Have watched Toby closely in the last 5 or 6 VFL games. In a few games I commented as to how he had a nearly great game in the sense that with one faster step, one jag to the left or one less slip his disposal would be perfect. Another time a team mate handballed to him while he was on a brilliant breaking run but the handball didn't quite connect.

Just not sure

One second after you dangle the carrot he’s walking for more money and opportunity. Unless we trade someone who’s ahead of him in the pecking order

That's the risk you take, and unfortunately the reality of being the reigning premier.

you can't offer him to much money because reality is he isn't worth it, and you cant guarantee him best 22 because he hasn't earn't it.

Further to this, Alwyn Davey could go anywhere from 15 to 25, meaning that 22 could well go & Bombers might want some points to match the f/s bid.

I would be quite happy with MFC bidding on Davey with p13/14, his pace & skill wouldn’t go astray in our fwd line.

Goodwin being interviewed now on RSN 927 breakfast show  says Bedford, Chandler, Laurie, JVR are all part of our future going forward.

Believes Kossie is very happy at MFC and can see him playing  with us long term. Doesn't know where the rumours about him leaving come from. Can get podcast on RSN later today

I wouldn't be opposed to Francis. Could finally see him reach his potential and play him back while shifting Petty forward.

🤮 Francis and Stewart would be no chance of playing senior footy at the Dees

He is great to listen to Goody.  The club is in great hands and he clearly understands they’ll need to change some things next year

We have way too many NQR small forwards on our list and if one (or two) of them lands us a decent draft pick, we should definitely make the move.

You can't have four small forwards but only one midfielder developing at Casey.

I'd be happy if Bedford stays on but can see the reasoning for him moving. Clubs are going to be after guys on the fringe in our team now and into the future.

What I don’t understand is why he did not change things this year, once it became obvious we were slowing.   Say round 7 or 9

maybe it was the learnings

All our developing mids are playing out of position in the AFL; Sparrow and Jordon. Also how many do we need? We have either star dynamic mids or solid tough mids, all of which have 5+ years left and contracts just as long. Even Harmes rarely gets into the middle.

Frankly, I am fine with developing forwards to run through the midfield and provide run with good skills and not bothering too much with developing the next Sparrow. Obviously if we find a talent then you get that kid but we have made our midfield bed, time to fix the forward line and the connection into it.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
