Laurie is definitely in, Van Rooyen may be in.

But my question is whether it is time to invoke the positional switch which was first mooted by the club three years ago and has yet to be trialled in any game. That being playing Jackson as a ruck rover alongside Gawn. If Clarrie is out, then it's the perfect week to go with it, but even if Clarrie plays, there are some benefits as port plays a heavy stoppage game and having another hard body who loves to tackle in there won't hurt.

The other positional switch Goody should consider is this. Does anyone have confidence in our key forwards to mark the ball and go bang to either a lead-up, long give or shot from 50m. There is one player who can do all that and he may well be our best forward - Steven May.

Love the idea but I think swinging May forward would only happen in game where injuries occur to our forwards. I don't fully understand your reasoning for sending him forward being that he kicks in to one side predominantly as a backman. I imagine thats by design based on coaching and structure rather then him deciding that or being a left-footer.... However, he's far too important down back. I understand the emergence of Petty has been great but May does so many things that go unseen, he drives/steers the ship back their while manning the opposition's best forward.

Jackson though to me has to spend more time in the middle. Would love to see him as no.1 ruckman the next few weeks. Max won so many taps that eventuated in the Cats winning the ball. Jackson gives you a much better chance at winning that ball back if that happens. We saw the effect he had against Brisbane. He gives you so much more around every stoppage. 

To me its pretty simple. Play Max as a forward. It can be a lead up role or deeper but he's such a good target down there. Play him as the second ruck, just try it.

If we play the Weid it should be a forward pocket position. Bedford goes out . Jvr  comes in .B.Brown goes out . B.Laurie replaces Fitsch due to his selfish acts and lack of goals. If Oliver is out Dunstan gets his spot. Brayshaw plays wing again. Jordan is out. Rivers or Hunt plays defence.  May or Petty could play forward which means Tomlinson would come in. Remember when Petty replaced Tomlinson most wanted Petty to get dropped. If that the case Bailey would get dropped.

Clarry's signing just put the Jacko issue in context.

Taylor and Co. will do the best deal and develop the best solution to support the Dees once-in-a-generation squad no matter what. Clarry/Viney/Gawn/Trac (and Angus) are cultural icons and all have done the hard yards of this squad and consequently a priority.  Jacko's a Flag player at 19ish.

Success has come too early to him to appreciate those with more history of the dark days.

I don't know if Jackson is homesick or not, but plenty of people, particularly young people, do get homesick. It's a perfectly understandable emotion. I don't agree with the tone of the next sentence where you say "suck it up...or get out of the way", but that's pretty much what has to happen if Jackson is indeed homesick. If he wants to stay, great. If he goes, we'll be handsomely compensated.

LOL!!!   A bit OTT by Ryan. 

How many youngsters does he want.  Last time I looked Bowey, JJ, Petty, Jackson, Kozzie, Sparrow, Bedford and Spargo are under 22 and played less than 50 games.  That is 1/3 of our starting 22.

Easy for him to make blanket statements.  I would be surprised if Turner doesn't play again post injury, Howes most probably would have played by now if not injured.  Bedford is getting regular games.

Nonetheless, I wouldn't be surprised to see a Laurie or JVR debut but not just for the sake of it as Ryan seems to suggest.  As we know Goodwin and co don't change a team without good reason.  And once out it is hard to get back in unless injuries involved.

I think Bailey Laurie has to play.. and i would drop Spargo. 

Ineffective at best the last 2 games. and really not a great year.

Jacko is only valuable as a 4th defender in the middle when he plays as a ruck. On a pure midfield basis, he is not in the top 5 in our club, so I wouldn't even bother. Harmes and Brayshaw and possibly even Sparrow and JJ would probably understand the position better. 

On a forward flank Laurie’s a slower, less fit, less experienced, less combative version of Spargo.

Laurie’s VFL form is very promising for his future as a mid/forward type player with excellent skills. But that’s the future, when he’s developed his tank and his strength to play AFL midfield minutes. He’s barely established his midfield craft at VFL level, he’s a long way off AFL level.

In terms of bringing fresh players in to play half forward I’d still have Chandler and Melksham more impactful at AFL level than Laurie. And Spargo ahead of both.

Take your pick of Dunstan or Melksham for Oliver if needed, just depends where they want to use Petracca, Sparrow and Harmes

Fritsch survives especially if Oliver is out as we need the scoring power. But it’s last chance for him.

Brown, JJ, Spargo….for now they’re all better than the alternatives

Fair point in that "all" was over the top.

But again this is an issue for a so called professional on half a mill per annum having a go home factor.

If its true then I don't get it. 

Jusy say i want more money and move on.

But don't plead homesickness.

Weid for Bedford (need another target up forward desperately. JVR is probably still too raw. I know Weid has been poor but, we have no one else)

With all due respect Dee, how do you know Laurie wont be impactful? he hasnt played at AFL level?

Reckon they stick with Bowey, we couldn't hit a target last week so don't see the logic including either butcher in Hunt or Rivers

Per disposal he is by far our best goal assist player for 2 years now.  But let's ignore that. 

For a midfield that is well below average by foot and decision making,  the narrative should be how do we get this guy the ball more as the last kick inside 50 rather than drop him.

Per disposal? That's a horrible matrix to judge a player. It benefits low possession players.

We need some other avenues to goal. Bedford is the 1st out for JVR because we need to revert to our preferred structure. Spargo out for Laurie because Laurie seems to have potential as a mid/forward crumber, and should be rewarded.
