He’s on as much as Langdon (~$500k) and he could be playing for half a dozen other teams regularly. It’s best for both parties for him to go.

There's every chance your namesake will go past him next year.

If it was up to me Tomlinson will be required and training with the backs along with Joel Smith and Turner while Petty will be training with the key forwards along with JVR and TMac. Unless we trade in a key forward or back that is what we need to work with for 2023.

This is the most boring rumour thread since 2008.

Anyone one want to hear what I know?  I don't want to trigger any of the mega DL snowflakes so here is your chance to block me if you dont want to hear what I have to say.  Block dont abuse.

Anyone one want to Harry Petty what I know?  I don't want to Trengenza any of the Magarey Medalist DL snowBlacers so here is your chance to Brock McLean me if you don't want to Geary what I have to say.  Brock don’t Cam Bruce.

Riddle sorted. Sounds like old news.

Think we need to test the market on this one, a few clubs would be keen on a defender like him.

Think it also depends on the what he's capable of.  He was not the same player in 2022 as he was in early 2021.  In early 2021 he had the best 1 on 1 record (or  something) in the league.

Coming back from a serious injury he may still get back to that level.  Needs a 2020-2021 TMac style summer working on agility and speed and we may lose little in defence if Petty goes forward.

I think many forget he was rehabbing over the pre season. With a good and fit solid summer under his belt he should get back to his best.

Turner has struggled at Casey and JVR can’t do it alone. 195cms is roughly KPP size these days so it’s an arbitrary measure.

Indeed a fair portion are busts. Which is why you need developing young talls as not all will make it but they’re crucial to success.

We have wasted space with Daw, M Brown etc and now have a real issue. With Jackson gone and M Brown certain to be delisted, we now have 4 players over 195cms. A hobbled B Brown, a 30 year old Gawn, a not going to make it Weid and Petty.

Compare that to the league leaders: Geelong has 8 ,  Collingwood have 10, lions have 10. Not all will make it of course but I don’t think it’s great lost management from us to have a glut of Bedford/Chandler/Laurie types all playing for Casey and no back up ruck or developing talls.

Come again????🧐

We can play Tmac back if Petty goes forward and succeeds along with JVR.
If Turner gies well then even more flexibility is available. And Tommo  will be better after a full post ACL season I estimate.

Not a fan of Melksham by any means, but the reason for retaining him is quite simple:

Between main and rookie list we will probably and have lost :

M.Brown, Rosman, Daw, Baker, and Jackson.  That is 5 list spots already, and we will in all likelihood get 2 draft picks for Jackson.

We don't know what Bedford and Chandler will do, but if they were to go, then probably more draft picks.

Even with 5 picks, that means our 5th pick is pick 90 at the earliest.  If Melksham is delisted another draft spot, then that becomes pick 108.

Is Melksham better than a speculative pick 90? One would have to think so.

Give Rosman a rookie spot and hope he comes on and does not get injured.

Trying to be creative how would' Logie (Freo) and Keath (Dogs ) or Bruce(Dogs) be any good as 3rd or 4th forwards or defenders? None are over 195 cm I don't think but as KP F or Backs Bruce might also surprise in defence. Logue should thrive with us up forward or back and Keath may be a 4 th defender if Turner comes on. As a KP Back as we think
Thsts assuming Petty goes forward .

Should  not cost us a fortune.and plenty of ready made depth. Bruce may need a thorough medical however.

How about a Top3 pick from Freo plus Logue and Henry as a hslf firward or winger for JL and our No 34 or future  2nd or 3rd Rounder?

Adding Grundy Cadman ( or the best KPF draft recruit ) plus say Logue, Bruce or Keath and Henry would add a potential A Grader (Cadmsn or other recruit) and 3 B graders including a quick clever flanker/ winger to our stocks to replace Melky.

Only problem is would we be going down  the Ssints path and trading and not drafting youngsters which JT is good at picking mostly.

Tomlinson and Bedford are the only ones we have that could get other teams interested, even then it’s probably touch and go with Tommo.

Thats why his name keeps coming up

We might have different opinions as to what a required player is.   He spent most of the year at Casey - he's got one more year to run on a contract on reasonable $ for a guy that's likely again to spend the best part of 2023 kicking the dew off  unless there are some significant injuries to key backs - and as @old55 has said the first in line appears to be Dan Turner anyway.

I can absolutely see a situation where Tomo requests a trade in his own best interests and I can absolutely see the club agreeing to it if it helps them free up some TPP room.

Interim opinion:

Darcy Tucker (Freo) - yes as a “French fries” addition in the Jackson trade. Should be cheap contract $

Josh Corbett (Suns) - like Jake Riccardi (Giants), any forward who is cheap but knows how to kick goals is a target. Should be cheap contract $

Brodie Grundy (Pies) - when did we ever trade to help the feral Pies or get a good player in a trade with the pies.  Never!! It’s a No from me. Injury prone. Fragile. Ruckman not a key forward. Spend our $$$ elsewhere please.

Couldnt agree more Grundy is high risk and really adds nothing  special

He played 14 games and in 6 he got 9 possessions or less. I watched the games. Towards the end of the season he didn’t do much. In the last round he had 5 touches and 1 mark and in prelim he was unsighted.

Got some potential for sure but he’s not exactly bashing the door down for senior selection.

Its in Tomlinson's interest to look for a trade.  He is 29 with one year on his contract when he will be 30.  It is only a year but reaching 30 may reduce his value to another club.

Now he may get a 2 or probably 3 year contract extending his career into his early 30's.

His salary was rumoured to be in the region of $500k so it would be a good move to free up some TPP for us

imv he falls into the category of:  we are happy to have you on our list next year but if you can find another club we will support you.  This is what we did with TMc and ANB two years ago.

i bet he's one of the first people to sign a new deal over pre-season, theyll lengthen him out by an extra year or two, giving him security into his 30s which as a footballer on the fringes he will jump at and in exchange he will flatten out his deal salary wise. its win-win.

its not in his best interest to request a trade if his best interest is to win a flag, he's at the right side and he's been unlucky but luck could change. maybe we retry him as a winger over preseason you just never know

I admire your trust in him.

He needs to do a power of work to get back into the team, a team where spots are tight.

His last senior game was very very poor.  It was against Sydney where Reid beat him one on one several times and Reid got 3 goals in very short time.  Worse, Tomlinson sulked each time.  I haven't watched Casey to know what he has done to redeem himself but he has quite a bit of work to do to get ahead of Smith and Turner.  Attitude as well as form.

i dont have any more trust in him than the next DLer i'm just being realistic about what the likely outcome is for tommo and the rest of his professional career

I have some intel that Tomlinson is far more advanced in thinking/planning for life after footy than he is thinking about a major shift for another footy contract

There have been signs that maybe he has already made the 'mental' shift out.

You realise he's a key defender yeah? His main role is to prevent his opponent and the opposition scoring. I'd rather him average 9 disposals a game and average 1 goal against then average 20 disposals a game and 4 goals against...

Posters keep perpetuating this myth about Grundy and it's just not true.

2022 is the only year in his career that he's hasn't played the vast majority of games.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
