I love how quietly this happened. I sometimes cannot believe how much the MFC has changed. Only 10 years ago this would have been announced with a presser, a youtube video, a letter from the Queen, while Clarry was standing next to Barrassi, Neita, Jonesy, Goodwin and Coffey. We have finally matured and the internal integrity of the club (recent stuff from Bartlett aside) is rock solid.

I also believe Clarry bang-bang-bang Oliver will surpass Robbie as our best ever player, and I find that very difficult to admit. He is sublime. My eyes follow him whenever I am watching the Dees on TV, he plays at full pace, and kills opposition with run, grunt and penetration. Absolute star.

No dynasty is guaranteed, but if Dogga and Gus also sign, we have a great chance of multiple flags at least.

Agree with most of this MB.

Let’s not make comparisons. Both Flower and Oliver have their own unique qualities that made/make them special.  Flower was sublime and Oliver is freakish.

Champions in their own unique way.

Flower was absolute poetry in motion. There is little poetry about Oliver, he is pure hip hop. If I had to choose between the two for my team, it would be no hesitation - Oliver.

Fox AFL News.

Lead story was the subhuman De Goey back at training.

Then 2 other stories ... one was Hardwick saying the club should do everything to keep Baker. Can't remember the other story.

The fourth ... yes the fourth ... story was Clarry signing on. Can you believe that?? It is massive news.

He's displayed a level of consistency over his career that I can't recall from anyone else.  I was thinking about him, Gawn and Petracca and where they sit against the greats of the last 50 years.  Whilst I still believe Gawn is our most influential player, I'm comfortable that Oliver is the best since since Flower, based purely on his incredibly high output over his first 130 plus games.  Tracc has had a couple of wonderful seasons and Gawn is our talisman and has been for a long time, but Oliver I think stands apart for his ability to make those around him better.  And that is absolutely worth a 7 year extension.

As much as I love Clarrie, Rinse, Repeat Rince Repeat, Robbie if he had played with Essendrug or Dawks would have been the greatest of the greats which Oliver is already and Rob sharing a lofty Podium!!🤩

BOTH OUT AND OUT STARS

What excellent news! But I am curious about how these contracts work. How can the club know what Clarry will be worth in seven years? He can't remain as powerful as he is now, can he? There must be some adjustment mechanism to take account of variation in his performance. Clarry and CP5 and Gawny and Gus and May and Lever and Jacko and Vines and Salo can't all be on $1.5m a year, can they? Just curious about how it all works.

We are cutting the list back and sending 14 out to play each week. Bang . . . bang, bang, bang.

FWIW Tom Brown on Ch 7 saying Oliver's deal is pegged to the CBA and total player payments. Starts off at about $1mill and could end up as $1.5 or $1.6mill by the end of contract

It's getting hard but Flower by a nose if Clarry can clean up his disposal and calmness when disposing of the ball he may just get passed Robbie, but gee he is getting close.

What struck me in the interview the club posted today is that when he was asked what his goals were over the next couple of years, he instantly went to team success as opposed to individual milestones that he wanted to accomplish over his career. (He's going to keep racking up personal honours but that goes without saying)

Hopefully this is indicative of where gus and dogga are in there contract talks!

Oliver's handballing is poetry.

I love the video. So many footballers of this calibre can be knobs. Clarry aint. He's a good decent country boy. The night he got drafted, he gave his mum a big hug (he gets his famous hair from her). It was a wonderful gesture. If my last memory in life is his Fist of God goal from the Grand Final, I will die content. To behold perfection.

8.00am.

Still nothing on AFL website on Oliver's contract, yet lots of articles on minor selection decisions.  Barely rates a mention on Fox and the Age web sites .

Arguable the best player and the most sort after if OOC, signs for life and it isn't news?  Not Big news!

He is chronically underappreciated.  He deserves far more recognition and accolades.

Edit. Refers to AFL 'Home' page of their website.

This makes sense. Essentially he has a percentage of the cap this decade.

Makes it easier for some of you who try to compare contracts from a decade ago. I believe the cap is around $13.5m in 2022 so the new broadcast rights will increase that. But Oliver will be on 7.4% of the cap. Done.

And you have Kane Cornes saying he has “got one over Melb” by making us take the risk of a long term deal.

Nearly time to stop consuming any footy media, and just watch games.

Calm down. It is also only ‘engageable news’ for Dees fans. No one wants to read about the best player not going anywhere 18 months before his contract was initially up - other than Dees fans…

If we sign him for 3 Kane Cornes says it's not enough. If we sign him for 7 it's too long.

This guy is an A+ player, rarely missed games, is consistent as any player in the AFL, and is not even 25. How is 7 years a risk? Who here thinks he won't still be playing decent footy at 32?

Wouldn't be surprised if there was a little bit of quiet sniffing around behind the scenes while all the presumed attention was on LJ.

MFC moved very quickly..

Thank you.  But it disappeared off the 'front' (Home) page of the AFL website pretty quickly!  I couldn't find it on the 'front' (Home) page last night or this morning...

I bet the media will go ga-ga when De Goey signs with a club and he has done little that is positively newsworthy.

Generally, I still feel he is underappreciated and under applauded in the media.

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
