Um I dont think Bowey is in the side to win aerial contests. Often he stays out of them.

I think his form of late has been ordinary, perhaps Rivers in.....

Heโ€™s generally won his 1 on 1โ€™s when needed, itโ€™s a big part of his game. Seeing him get out marked by McCluggage is insulting and Bowser will know that.

Riv needs his speed and run 100% back to really get that spot.

No changes unless injuries or illness require. Salem was hobbling badly in the first but played on. I presume it was a corky. Hopefully he pulls up OK and is right to go. However, if he's not, I would have thought Hunt to replace him rather than Rivers. (It's nice to have genuine choices, though.)

Yes unfortunately there isn't one.  BBB still a work in progress.  Let's see how he goes against the lowly Crows.

The only other tallish possibilty is Tomlinson and can't see that happening.

Bowey is really struggling at the moment. Rivers might be a better option.

Young fellas are always going to have some ups and downs.  No different here.  I don't think he's going badly enough to say "drop him" but in a managed sense on such a short break a managed option could be worth looking at for a bit ofna break and reset for Rivers.

Otherwise no changes for mine.

Bowey is perfectly fine.

Thought he was one of the few who played well against Collingwood.

Are people basing his game on how much he had the ball? With Salem and May back he's not going to be as much a focal as a distributor across half-back. Just needs to keep doing what he does, carry out his role in our defensive structure, provide a contest and make the right decisions with his disposal.

Unlike Rivers he rarely gets caught out of position. Rivers has struggled early on this season and needs to build on form in the two's. Last week was a step in the right direction.

For what its worth I would say Rivers have most pressure on Hibberds spot/role. Coaching staff adore what Bowey does.

I don't at all see the need to drop Bowey. We performed superbly last night, let's leave them and see if they can generate consistency into next week and then Geelong the week after.

The only major consideration is to ensure we're OK for the 5-day break going into the Geelong game.

For that reason alone, Gawn shouldn't play this week. Skip the Adelaide game, ensure he's fully fit, then return for Geelong.

Out BBB continued his woeful form.  Got outmarked again & again. In Tomlinson. Has to be an improvement.

He was much better last night. Yes, Andrews took a number of intercept marks, but at the game Brown's leading and work-rate looked much better than in the month before the bye. He also got us into the game in the first half when the game was at its hottest.

Tomlinson hasn't played forward since he joined us and won't be an improvement on Brown in anyway.

+1 Rivers for Bowey, more in honour  of how Riv has been playing in the 2โ€™s. Bowey can freshen up.

Wouldnโ€™t see Bowey as struggling.  The whole defensive unit was down the previous three weeks, as a unit.
And given the competition for small medium defenders positions, โ€œa week off to freshen upโ€ could mean he would not get back for a long time.

Yep.

Weid took.one mark and kicked np goals.

Maybe after stringing  a few games he'll get better.

Are you serious? McCluggage 185cm vs Bowey 176cm, and McC is a very good player.

Respect this, wouldn't it be great if Weideman just started to play last night's role and it ended up being Carey Mk2..

Let Gawn have another week off.

I thought Bowey's confidence was looking seriously shaken in the past few weeks as he learnt what it was like to lose - coughing up the ball, shirking contests, showing indecision - but last night he did all we could have asked of him and looked more like the 17 game undefeated champion we've all come to know and love, so I say keep him in.

It will be interesting to see how Viney pulls up. That was a hard hit he took and my first thought when I saw him on the ground was he'd ripped his hammy off the bone. Obviously he shook it off and played out the game as though nothing had happened but it may be a different story today. If he goes out we will have to bring Dunstan back in and just hope his poor disposal doesn't hurt us too much.

The other question is Salem. Hopefully he's fine but we have either Rivers or Hunt to come in if we need them. I imagine since Hunt was the sub he is seen as next in line, but by all accounts Riv has been improving during his time in the twos and it wouldn't worry me if we brought him in.

Forward line stays as it is.

In terms of his assignment though Deever i suspect he might have met the coaches' requirements last night.

It wasn't all about how he performed up forward as he also spent a fair amount of time rucking against andre' the giant and wasn't too shabby at all here IMV.

Weid was ok, just needs a couple of games, played his role, but agree it would be nice if he could clunk a few marks & kick a couple of goals a game

I'm all for no change but if Gawn's fit he must play no resting him we can't take Adelaide lightly they put a dent in our season last year on their home turf they won't be a pushover.

Insulting that he got out marked by a 24 year old, 118 game veteran and All Australian midfielder?

I think your post towards Bowey regarding this is far more insulting.

Iโ€™m giving Bowey credit for being a great overhead player for his size. Reads it perfectly, super leap, knows how to use his body for leverage.

McCluggage is a great player but heโ€™s not known for his marking at all. Insulting was a bit tongue and cheek but Iโ€™d back Bowser to win or half aerial contests against him most of the time.

Anyway, was just an example of how Bowey is playing well but a little below his best IMO.

No change, unless Salem is still a bit proppy. If he is, Hunt comes in.

No way does Rivers come back yet. He in particular was in rare horrible form prior to the bye and has to earn his way back in.

Bedford gives us another option and his pace is a serious point of difference. We are not a particularly quick team.

If Max tries to come back early, I'm going to sneak Ipecac into his double strength chai latte. Jackson and Weideman are a fine team to play their roles until Max heals FULLY.

The 5 day break in to the Geelong game should be the main factor when evaluating changes.

Thereโ€™s at least an argument for Hibberd and/or Bowey and Bedford coming out this week with a guarantee of coming back the next week. Maybe even Sparrow as well. Or Ben Brown if we want to be really cautious.

Although the more likely thing is they play and we see how everyone is going in a weeks time.

The melbourne way has been we select on merit. It has proved to be successful in the past, at least recently, and in my view should not change it.

Most of the time 2014.  I wouldn't say that's an iron clad g'tee in any club.  There will always be the odd favourite/s that appear.to be picked ahead of others that,  to some or many, appear to be chosen without any merit whatsoever.

We all know that Goodwin tends to the conservative side when it comes to team selection so it will most likely be no change even down to the sub assuming Jayden Hunt gets through todayโ€™s game with Casey.

Given that thereโ€™s a five day break between our trips to Adelaide and Geelong, Max is likely to play the latter if heโ€™s fit to go by then (it would also be at the lower end of his initial diagnosis).

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullartonโ€™s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Caseyโ€™s three matches and, with Melbourneโ€™s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next weekโ€™s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forwardโ€™s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasnโ€™t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the teamโ€™s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourneโ€™s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demonsโ€™ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the โ€˜G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sundayโ€™s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
