Andrew Gaze gets it because he's played at the higher level and knows what it takes.

Andrew Maher on the other hand is an absolute dead set plonker.

Strange discussion!

Paul Roos always maintained it was the system or game plan that mattered not individuals. Especially early in a season. But within that system there had to be complete buy in and significant talent. Melbourne have that.

Agree with RJay too, Salem is a massive cog in that system. We'll get even better when he returns.

Dermie is still a denier and dinosaur and it’s about time he is removed from the media circuit.

Reckons the Hawks would smack em based on talent alone. Pfft, Hawks would run out of puff by half time.

Andy Maher just says some really stupid things and if he cannot see why we are so good and successful he needs to find another profession.

Do people forget our finals series so easily? it was a near all time record performance over 3 games.

I always get the feeling that Andy Maher dislikes Melbourne, because he thinks that’s where Carlton should be right now.

An excellent system/game plan with loads of talent is a sure-fire way to success

But our all-over defence cannot be understated ... without that all over the ground method,  there would be gaps for the opposition to exploit

So we've got all the key elements for September football.  The other good teams don't have all the attributes

And Salem will add a lot when he returns ... but without him we're 10-0!! Should have been All-Australian last year as he ticked every box and had an A+ year (in a Premiership team)

Its both.

You need a good system, but you then need players that can implement that system consistently.  That is both talent and attitude.  At the moment we have all three and it shows.  Other teams have had it (Hawks, Tigers, cats), but we see when over time when talent gets older its harder to maintain the system.  So ongoing development and refreshing the list is important.

Well that's 9 mins I'll never get back. Andy Maher thinking he's come up with something profound when blind Freddy has been saying for 15 years the game isn't one on one anymore. The only thing that matters is premierships. How good we are compared to other teams comes down to how many flags we win.

What I learnt from that is:

A)Derm doesn’t watch much footy that isn’t Hawthorn. He waffled on about Sam Mitchell but I was at that game and the hawks kicked the last 3 goals to make it seem a lot closer than it was. Sure, they tried to play keeping’s off and work the ball on the 45 angle - but they still didn’t kick enough of a score to genuinely threaten us.

B) Andy doesn’t watch much footy, and when he does he doesn’t understand what he’s looking at.

C) My afternoons are better spent not listening to the radio.

Glad I read the comments before listening to the audio!

Saved me from enduring 3 of my least favourite commentators.

A good system relies on talented players who can exploit the system. As stated above, we have both.

Plus we have no obvious gaps or weaknesses that can be exploited by the opposition.

One week at a time.

I think they have a hard time accepting that we are this good. Further to that would be last year was not a fluke

I admit that I do at times as well because, to be really candid, most people alive on the planet today have only known us to be an utterly terrible team.

The work experience kid responsible for SEN's social media needs to improve their basic promotional techniques.

Assuming of course this tag line in the tweet promoting the audio clip was actually trying to encourage people to listen to the clip (maybe they were trying to protect people and wanted to discourage anyone to press play lest their brain explode - if so that stregy certainly worked for me):

What makes this @melbournefc so good?

@HawthornFC great Dermott Brereton gives his analysis

LOL very few dynasty teams had more than 5 champions. We have 5 champions and another 10 A graders who would walk into every single side in the competition. Ridiculous discussion.

Fortunately read the comments first, so won’t waste my time listening.

Dermie hates Melbourne and can’t accept or see what’s obvious. We are a long way ahead of rest of competition, that’s why we are two games clear, and destroyed Lions, Cats & Dogs in last year finals.

Andy Maher is harmless, talks too much, thinks Carlton are it. Just forgetting about last years finals , and doesn’t notice that 47% difference is quite a lot. Carlton is circa Demons of 2018, they do have some excellent players in Cripps, Curnow, McKay, Weitering, & Walsh.

Max, Clarry, Trac, May, Lever, Salem, Langdon, Brayshaw are all A+ for position they play and our bottom 6 are still very solid.

I live interstate, and only hear Derm doing occasional ‘special comments’ during game-day TV coverage.  That brief audio clip 100% confirmed the view I had previously formed about his worth as a football commentator.  I’m still shaking my head.

What an absolute load of BS.

They also aren't mentioning potential 'AAA' grade players in Pickett, Jackson & Petty.

Plus guys who aren't far off in Salem, Langdon & Fritsch.

It's also all retrospective.

The Brisbane Lions team is viewed that way because they won 3 straight flags. If we do that then they have to look at the players in a similar light.

I actually believe our midfield of Gawn, Trac, Oliver and Viney would challenge Keating, Voss, Lappin and Black. Would be an enticing match up. Imagine Voss and Oliver going at the same ball.....

Gawn and Jackson would overwhelm Keating. If we add Langdon and Brayshaw and allow them to add Akermanis to complete the sets then it would be a contest of the bests v the bests of each era. The dees should be better through weight of top class numbers.

When I saw Dermott & analysis in the same sentence I should have known not to bother. Seriously one of the dumbest commentators in football. Uses long winded monologues to cover but how does the old saying go about opening your mouth & proving it…ah yes this is the one.

It's better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than open it and remove all doubt

Nobody can tell me that Richmond’s list was better than ours when they were winning flags.

Dusty is a stand out beyond most players ever seen in the AFL for his pure ability to dominate finals. But aside from him we are a better balanced side with more A graders.

Nicely posited assessment. You are dead right! The addition and re-activation of Salem's skills into this side is going to be make the Dees this year's premiers. Having a record of 10-0 is highly commendable in today's footy; and Salem will assist us to be twice as potent.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
