Just for the record, South Melbourne were The Bloods from 1874 to 1933.  Roos resurrected it as part of 'embracing their history', welcomed Bobby Skilton and other ex players back into the fold etc. 

Yep, I think I said that whilst the Bloods itself had history beyond the swans and back to South Melb. It was Roos and their leadership team that are synonymous with the 'Bloods Culture'

I'm not sure I quite get what you mean here.... playing interstate teams in Tasmania and we'd be at empty venues?  why?  or are you saying we'd be playing interstate in empty venues because Tasmanian members won't travel? Can you clarify what you mean?  (oh and I don't agree with either premise) members travel interstate all the time to watch their team play,... why would it be different with Tassie?  Travel time is similar from Melb - Geelong than Melb - Hobart.  You blokes hate travelling to Geelong to watch the Dees, I can guarantee a Hobart waterfront stadium and the pub scene is much nicer ;) 

The side will receive all of the funding currently being funnelled into the Hawks and Roos, which other club has the state govt backing that this would have.  Every club has AFL funding. I believe that the business case put forward by Tasmania is not going to require the ongoing support that the GWS and GC teams were derived from. It will be designed to stand on it's own feet. Look at the Green Bay Packers if you want to see how the model might look.

I meant when the Tassie team travels to interstate venues.  I wasn't at all suggesting Tassie fans don't travel.  But will they travel in sufficient numbers to quarter or half fill stadiums every other week and make a game financially viable?  Will the interstate fans go and watch those games?  I don't know.  Current experience, with even the larger more successful interstate clubs with well heeled fans eg Crows and Eagles, says probably not.  Sydney and Brisbane rely on their historical Vic fan base to attend Vic games.  Even then the numbers aren't great.

AFL crowds are at the lowest level since 1996.  crowds-slump-to-lowest-levels-in-26-years for which there are a multitude of reasons.  We have 60,000 members and there are various threads lamenting the lack of fan attendance at games.

We don't go to Geelong because they won't give us any seats.

Anyway, I loved your idea.  Just trying to find a middle road that might get the OK from other clubs needed to for a Tassie liscence.

I have always said that if Tassie got a team I would get a membership in some capacity, no questions asked - Not to say that I would give up my support for the Dees! Would absolutely go to games here when ever possible.

But there is now way i would give a red [censored] cent to a relocated AFL club. Don't want their history, culture, or supporters... have more than enough of our own here already.

And as far as Geelong always having a big crowds at Kardinia , there are less than 35k that can fit in there. If they get 20+ it seems like a decent crowd. Hardly an achievement for mine. Hell, the Haw V Brisbane Match at York park got more in attendance this week than WBv GCS & GWS v WCE combined.

Tassie needs to be a start up club wearing maybe Green & Yellow with a Tasi Devil as it's motto. A Tasi tiger motto would be good as well, even if to just infuriate Richmond supporters. But a Devil would be one of the most iconic mascots in the league, especially if Looney Toons gave them the rights to use Taz.

North may have to move to Canberra. Or fold which would be a shame but this league is dog eat dog and better them then us.

We won't travel in enough numbers to fill quarter or half a stadium, but thats population, that said I don't think that current games between Melbourne clubs would see that criteria either.

Attendance at games is an issue, but it will come back, those thinking it would immediately return after COVID were probably a little optimistic. Interest in the game (supported by our membership number increase) isn't waning, it's still growing, Tassie can and should add to that growth. I know it's a much smaller scale but the Jackjumpers in the NBL this year have had full houses almost every week.

I wonder whether Nth supporters would prefer to be in the VFL rather than be relocated. I seem to recall some of the Fitzroy members indicated (at the time) that they would have preferred moving back down to the VFL or a local comp would have been better than the move to Brisbane. Interested to see what they think now after all this time.

Do you think if the stadium is built in Hobart the people from the North will travel to attend games and conversely if the stadium is built in Launceston the people from the South will travel to attend games. From what I understand this is a huge challenge.

Also Green Bay is very unique. Publicly held and 3 generations of not knowing anything else other than loving your city's football team. Not built overnight.

Yes I do think that they will travel, but the team can't and won't be located in Launceston. They've already identified building a new stadium on the Derwent Waterfront.

People will start travelling purely because the talent pathways will become a lot more clear for juniors and people travel now for the Jackjumpers and the Hobart Hurricanes.

I sat next to enough arrogant North fans on Saturday to know that when we are down the bottom again they won't show any mercy towards us. Being surrounded by North fans (albeit 4 or 5 of them) was an experience I hadn't had for a long time. The talk about the standing ovation at half time was bang on. They were pretty ordinary but late in the last quarter one of them did turn to me asking if I had the GF tickets etc. Said we were an impressive side and good luck to us so that was kinda nice.

But to your point those aren't going to feel sorry for us if they are top and we are bottom because like us they will be wrapped up in their own success. I do feel bad for opposition footy fans who pay their memberships and get a bum steer from their clubs though.

We drink Boags in the south of the state and I've seen them drink Cascade in Launceston.  It will happen.

Geelong's population is 250k. Tasmania has a population of over 500k, with more than half the state based around Hobart. You cannot base the team in the Nth where the population is 66k. It's basic maths really.

The biggest problem is actually political than personal, the electorates of Bass and Braddon are typically marginal seats, meaning that they get a LOT of attention and funding from election promises. Personally I think the politicians and local govt members are the mouthy gits that make the noise more than the people themselves.

I used to live in Launceston.... I survived crossing down to Hobart without drama! 😉

That Hobart waterfront is a world standard environment. Has to be built in Hobart.

I just hope it gets support from the whole state. It will need it. Hobart is a long way away from being a Green Bay.

100% this re Jack Jumpers. York park is a better football venue than bellrieve for me, but if this stadium gets up and is anywhere near half as good as the concept art is, I think that there will be less of an argument. That's not to say a 3/9 setup for games North v South wouldn't happen anyway a la Giants with Giants Stadium and Canberra.

I agree, but the system can sometimes break, especially if someone makes mistakes or the wrong people are in charge at the wrong time. I would argue that you can't afford to miss out on the climb too often. Melbourne arguably did miss out and it almost cost us dearly.  That didn't mean we were immune to this very same type of conversation. The main difference I see is that the Tassie bid wasn't in full swing when we sucked.  If it had been there could have been serious concerns.

I recall as Team Manager of the Dees in 1979, I was warned to not linger in the race at Victoria Park, if I wanted to avoid being doused in urine, from cups or cans that had been used as urinals. Spit was another issue to be careful of.

I went up and down the race in record time.

Jeelong doesn’t have a divide though. They ALL Barrack for Jeelong. 
There is a division in Tassie. It is real. 
what worries me is 2-3 years in, when the Team is mid table, will the Noth Taswegions travel? After the initial Honeymoon period.

That might’ve been a one-off (doesn’t make it any more palatable, I know). The bulk of their supporters at that time were lil old ladies. I loved going  to Arden Street because of that. 
This one time Sam Kekovich kicked the ball out on the full. The ball sailed into the crowd and hit me on the head, also on the full. I was concussed. I woke to a circle of blue-rinsed heads all fussing over me, they’d wrapped me in a blanket and were trying to make me drink tea. I was 7yo. 😁 How times have changed.

Arden Street was different. I went there the day the Pie Stall went up in flames. The place was packed, very lucky people were not seriously hurt
