I reckon our "system" does not really lend itself to huge scores. We are thrashing sides without it showing on the scoreboard because of our defence-first game.

I'm thinking around 40-50 pts barring Covid interruptions. Might even be closer.

Have you forgotten the Prelim & Grand final last year already?

With the Covid numbers escalating in WA, is there any thought that we should not go? Too far to fly in and fly out in one day I would have thought. You would hate to think our season gets derailed by the overt travel risk. Get Freo and WC for a while out may be an option? Alice Springs? Just thinking out aloud here!

Silly Billy, of course not.

We just don't look to be playing with that intensity at the moment. This is not a premiership game, it's a H&A game against a terribly out of form side playing at home. Of course it's possible. Very possible. I'm just not expecting it.

We’ve perfected our defensive organisation and system. We know it holds up no matter the opposition or situation. Why not use this game as an opportunity to work on forward connection and shooting practice.

I say let’s try to belt these bastards by 100+ points. I can’t think of a more worthy recipient than the weagles.

Their numbers are no worse than Victoria’s, and our players are no more at risk there, given they are going to play. In Victoria they will be playing as well as going out and about living life.
The only reason the WA sides are copping it big time is because Covid has only just started spreading. We have had it here for a long time and most of our players have already been exposed to it.

statistically, at the moment you have 2.5x chance of randomly bumping into a covid +ve person in perth than melbourne (and perth people have slightly higher vaccination rates than us)

I doubt our players are going to Perth to bump into people and go nightclubbing.

There's 4 million  more people in Vic than WA

Just wanna see some great 4 quarter footy.

Without losing the basic defensive structures and methods maybe just a very slight "fill your boots" adjustment so a few more players can take a bit of a free swing a little more during the match a bit like Rivers' goal last week.

Maintain discipline & respect the oppo without over celebrating but also look to really drive home the win a La the Toiges.

We got some really amazing support over there from so many in that finals series.  Happy to see us dish out a jolly good thrashimg but no lairising pls fellas.  Professional & humble all the way.  As Goody says "respect the game & your opponent"....always.

I think we'll see a game very similar to the Freo/Roos game. Not a 22 goals to 8 thrashing. A 14 goals to 3 thrashing. We won't dazzle with our scoring firepower; more likely we'll awe with our relentless defensive strangulation. A bit like what we did to St Kilda. You would imagine the margin would be bigger as St Kilda did a pretty good of hassling us and I don't think WCE can do that for a whole game.

My wife and I caught it on the flight back from Gold Coast. We were on a flight home on the next Melbourne bound flight after the Dees travelled home from Gold Coast game. Flights are the hardest to control for my mind for AFL sides.

Still no game 'preview' thread on their flying high site.  No interest?

Bigfooty:

Latest posts show widespread disinterest in attending and can't even give tickets away.  A bit of humour showing through!

  • I’m attending with my demons supporting father. Existence is pain.
  • I've thought long and hard about how we can compete against Melbourne this week. Normally I assume that the Eagles powers that be know what they are doing but that apparently isn't true...My comment: Poster then gives a role by role plan which is a bit long winded and a bit boring to post here.
  • Do we get to chain the opposition full back to our full forward so he's trapped in the goal square too?
  • Interested to see how many turned up.  I got the ITW email about tickets.... straight in the trash bin
  • How funny is it when you’re at the ground and Karl directs your attention to the big screen at the start of the 2nd quarter where the animated giant Eagle stomps on the opposition jumper and we’ve got 0.1 on the board and the games already over. Really pumps everyone up...
  • ...Or when they play Foo fighters The Pretender at 3QT and real off all the highlights from the goals we've scored, and we've only scored one.... so they just show replays of guys taking a chest mark instead.

My favourite:

  • I've got corporate hospitality tickets I can't get rid of for love nor money at the moment. I am going to have to drink quite a bit to get value out of the tickets this week

Given the pain the Eagles have dished out to us on many occasions (1990s and 2018 Prelim losses to name a few) over the decades, these two comments are particularly satisfying.

We should try holding them scoreless.  That would be a great outcome.

Not to be a smartass but that seems to be our aim every week.

I recall a game against the Weagles maybe 10 years ago.

Was a Thursday night clash.

We were getting flogged, which was expected, but the free kicks at half time was 20-0.

We got the first free of the second half which was obvious and the whole of Subiaco booed.

Cup cakes.

Like when Carlton would have fireworks pre game and were winning 3 games a year.

I'm torn between having a soft spot for them because they supported us at the granny and wanting to tear them limb from limb and kicking them while they're down like everyone did to us 😂

I'm for the second option!

Their fans have been merciless to visiting teams so not sure I can afford them to much sympathy or for very long.  I mean they had to support us or Geelong (PF) or the Bulldogs (GF) so no choice but to support the Dees.

This is the team that reportedly included the words "Demons are sh-t" when they sang their song after beating us in 2019 rubbing in the 2018 PF demolishing.

I would like revenge at the scene of the crime in a similar way we avenged 186 at Kardinia Park in round 23 and the PF.

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
