Incredibly, Zurhaar is not the last name to have played VFL/AFL when you list alphabetically.

Anybody know who the last player is?  Or the first?  (No googling, now!)

I seem to recall successful VFA player, Vic Aanensen, might have played (with South Melbourne, maybe?) Is he first? Otherwise, Jake Aarts

He would fix one of our remaining two areas of concern immediately, but realistically we would be no chance to get him. The AFL would probably try and veto any deal.

While I don’t mind Tomlinson, I would offer any and all of him, Chandler, Laurie, Baker and Melksham to get Larkey.

We probably can't afford him, nor do we have anything to give North. Any idea what his contract status is?

LDvC is correct with Vic Aanensen (South Melbourne) being the first player on the alphabetical list.

Coincidentally, we are playing Geelong this week and the last player alphabetically ran around for the Cats (in the 80s).

Getting Walsh in to review their football department is a positive action but when you hear the word 'culture' bandied around as a cause of their problems you'd think it needs to go deeper than that.

Worth a read re: North's early season justification of their form. Talks a lot about GPS and running numbers, which sounds oddly like the Neeld era. I remember someone recently (may have been Jonesy) talking about that era, saying our running numbers were amazing. But that doesn't help you if you can't play footy.

“In terms of definitive KPIs, our pre-season GPS comparisons (these are confidential, by the way) showed that the total volume of distance covered across the group increased year on year by 10% and the high intensity running and sprint training volumes were both up by over 30%. Clearly coming off a low base.”

That player was Peter Zychla.  He only managed 12 games over three seasons and is not well known.

Forget curing diseases and flying to Mars, I want to invest in virtual reality technology that allows us to play classics like Melbourne 2013 vs North 2022. I think we'd just win but it would be a ripper.

Neeld very lucky to get three of his five wins against GWS when they were rubbish. If nothing else - and there isn't much - he can say he was 3-0 against Kevin Sheedy and coached our highest scoring fourth quarter of all time.

I remember being at that game, going into the 4th quarter pretty much out of the game and bang! Judy Garland went beastmode.

Agree, the word culture is talked about a lot with this and surely that comes from the top.

Noble the sacrifical lamb.  Norm Smith and Roosy would not have done any better.  they are still bottoming out. and have MFC 2013 level talent

Gotta feel for the bloke

When you bottom out you have to be careful to leave enough older leaders that they can follow to understand the culture and standards. Mfc made the same mistakes. Otherwise you are waiting 5 years for the kids to have the presence and confidence to build and support it themselves which has too many risks attached to it ... guys like BB and Tarrant should still be there helping the team on field and off field

The main similarity between Noble & Neeld is of course that it will never be known if they could have been an effective coach if only they had been at a functional club.

His way of dealing with and approaching players, his setting of expectations that were setting him up to fail, his feeling he'd 'made it' just by getting a senior position and his emotional meltdowns during our darkest hours would be proof enough.

However, I'd say Neeld going to Essendon and being moved on because he was being an active blockage between the line coaches and Woosha definitively and unambiguously showed he was never going to be a competent head coach.

While Noble had that one story come out about him blasting the players, it hasn't been a steady drip feed of damning anecdotes and innuendo like Neeld. He clearly isn't the man for this job, but the job was pretty bloody tough to start with. He, like Rhyce Shaw, was set up to fail.

The club can create a supportive environment but the players set the culture.

Well, yes and no. If youngsters are coming into a basket case of a setup then they don't stand a chance of changing the overall culture.

I agree that you need more older wiser heads keeping things in check on field and whoever said Brown and Tarrant should still be there for this is absolutely right. However I fully believe culture starts from the top in any organisation. The Board/CEO brings in the right Coach/Footy department and the Coach/Footy department then brings in rhe right players.

Very sad.

A good man and an excellent football person brought to this due to incompetence by the non-coaching people before him.

He will be snapped up by another club in another coaching or football role.

If we had a spot I would happily have him at the dees.

Total basketcase of a club. How many new coaches is this beast going to ruin?

Go all in for Clarko now, might as well for the Hobart years.

David Noble has a lot of credits across the AFL community. He will move on and find a better role.

As for North, whose going to put their hand up to do this job now? Inexperienced coach wasn’t supported, and now an experienced guy is gone less than 2 years later.

AFL will have their fingerprints all over what happens next you’d think - unless of course they are happy to see Victorian clubs gone. Interesting times.

I feel for David Noble. I also wonder about how John Noble feels? He was part of the Collingwood team that overran North on the weekend. He may well be feeling substantial guilt in his father's demise. I could imagine he might believe that if North had won that game, his father might still be coach of North. It's like an ancient Greek tragedy.

This was the first thing I thought of when I saw the two shaking hands after the game!

Is Roosy still a consultant there?

Yep, sitting on a beach in Hawaii sipping cocktails while North burns. Roos is a great footy person, but doesn’t seem to have been entirely invested in North!

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p

KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti
