Exclusive down the ground vision

I heard someone on SEN mentioning how good Melbourne look on  the down the ground vision with defense transitions etc. Does anyone know where I can view the down the ground vision. Living overseas and not being able to get to the games this would be super cool to see.

At home games I sit behind the goals on level 2 (redlegs reserved area) and really agree with the thoughts here.

Although the far end can be difficult to view, the end to end view gives a fantastic perspective of both our attacking transition, movement and overlap, as well as our defensive zone shifting.

When attacking, our decision to "change lanes" with 45 degree kicks, and use of the players on the wing is something that's really emphasized from this view.

And seeing our zone from this angle , you can understand how we've gone 54 games without a team scoring 100 points against us. The zone shifts so quickly sideways to defend the switch, it's unreal.

I was talking today about how great it is watching us shift from man on man at a stoppage to a zone defence/net. Really satisfying. You can't see that on tv, sorry 

Unfortunately I don't know where to get down the ground views. I seem to recall a long time ago Foxtel playing around with multiviews (ie push a red button to choose a single camera view) but I don't know if that's still a thing, sorry.

behind the goals footage is afl exclusive and clubs pay a pretty penny to access it. and the likes of fox footy license it in order to use it in their mag shows (e.g. afl 360, couch)

No, it shouldn’t.

The NFL release the ‘all 22’ footage which is the side and end cameras and allows media and I believe fans to study each plan.

That then allows the media to study the game at a much higher level and create far more interesting content. 
 

Instead of this weeks ‘Essendon don’t defend’ or ‘aren’t working hard enough’ we might actually get some understanding of just where and why they are breaking down defensively.

Every club gets it. There’s very few secrets in modern footy. Allowing the fans (via the media initially) more access promotes understanding and let’s fans know what to look for. If nothing else it might stop idiots in the crowd constantly calling for players to ‘kick it’.

Very interesting. I would love to see video from those end to end vantage points & have our defensive strategies explained to me. Very hard to see it happening in real time from a side on view. All I can say is we are lucky to have some very smart people at our club masterminding it all. You still have to have the skilled, gut running players to execute the plan, and we do. Our fitness levels are now through the roof. It took us about 5 years to get there, most of it under Burgo’s master plan.

I know what ' Hoi polloi ' means too. But I'm not poorly educated !!!

Fat chance, people have been crying out for down the ground footage for years. I don't even think coaches have had access to it very long. 

I would love to see it and would pay for a service that includes it but it seems too hard for some reason. Have to rely on the odd occasions fox footy show some footage.

I really don't understand why the AFL insist on keeping everything a secret.

They don't actually make extra money out of selling data and vision to the media or clubs: the media companies would factor it in to the costs of their broadcast rights bids (the print media don't use the data) and the clubs funds come from the AFL anyway.

The only advantage I can see is that it is an anticompetitive practice to "lock out" non accredited media/broadcasters, but it doesn't seem that the content is used well enough to provide them any advantage.

It also really harms the overall AFL product. Better quality data and analysis, even by 3rd party and amateur commentators, would improve overall engagement in the product and make me much more interested in the non MFC games.

Viewing from one end is often the best vision for discerning ball and player movements. I would hope that the club has spotters high up at each end for all games to provide info for the coaches in the high level box. I believe that this is standard practice in american grid iron.

Purely business. Foxtel needs to get some benefits for paying for rights. By giving Foxtel some exclusive vision, it encourages people to consider paying Foxtel so they can see it. If the AFL gave it away for nothing to everyone who wanted it, Foxtel has less it can offer to encourage people to sign up.

I have no problem with this business decision.

If you follow Fox footy on Twitter they will often have clips from their various shows that include the "Lab" segments where they study various plays. Often down the ground footage can be found there..

I remember watching the sporting news on TV when Adelaide won their first flag. Adelaide players were training with the reporter in the foreground talking.  This was during the finals series. The players in the down the ground vision moved beautifully like a synchronised school of fish. Convinced me they were going to be premiers then.
