I’m genuinely keen to read why people keep suggesting for Hunt to be omitted every week. Hunt was having a very good season last year until he was injured and would’ve been a lock to stay in the team. 

Bowey replaced Hibbo against Gold Coast for his debut, Hunt was injured the following week and Smith came in for him. Smith was hurt between qualifying final and prelim and that’s when Hibbo came back as Hunt wasn’t quite ready following the ankle injury. Happy to stand corrected, but that’s how I remember it. Hunt might be playing a deeper role this year until Salem returns and I believe he’s doing well again. I’ll be interested to see how we change it up when Salem returns.

We're still playing Brayshaw in defence. That's one spot that can be "freed up" for a defender with Brayshaw going back to the wing. But would we now do that? Brayshaw is playing excellent football off half-back and Jordon played his best game of the year, if not his career, on the wing as Brayshaw's replacement, against Port.

Btw the last one wasn't actually that good and I bet Sparrow is pleased it was TMac not Weid on the goal line in the G/F... Both Kossi and TMac do things each game that Weideman can't even dream about

FWIW i think Petty has serious scope as a forward based on form a few years back. I also think he could be the best key back in the next few years.

Your second paragraph is pretty accurate though and he played for Vermont Eagles up to around age 16 I think in the Eastern Football League before a handful of games at various levels up to VFL. Not the background that many others have had the luxury of.

I have been giving some thought to this as well but less so with Tomlinson as I dont think he has the pace or the overhead marking ability to be really successful in that forward role 

When our list is fit the depth in the back half is better than forwards which means that we could potentially look either Petty or Smith as possible alternatives to Weid or TMac if neither are performing

Smith in particular has some weapons that could make him a difficult match up inside F50. Quick, can take marks overhead and not a terrible kick. He has been tried there briefly before with some success. Given our backline depth I was a little surprised he was training exclusively in a defensive role preseason. Hard to see either of them having less impact on the game than say Weid's last game

His kicking is still sketchy at times so he’s there only until Salem gets back imo.

I love Hunt but this is my thoughts, he has great run and carry out of defence but way too often butchers the ball. Had we not had the injuries we’ve had I think he wouldn’t be in the side. 

I have also been actually impressed with what I’ve seen of Smith this season, he’s still got a ways to go but he’s no longer doing some of the crazy kamikaze stuff that just causes chaos. 

I’m more interested in the other end of the ground though, the decision of Brown/TMac, Brown/Weid, TMac/Weid is going to be difficult. I personally think Brown comes in without any second thought, his early form had been very solid and is clearly our most consistent tall forward. So it’s down to Tommy and Sam. 

I would like to see Sam given another 1-2 games to prove that the Essendon game wasn’t a fluke. Two matches at the G (where he seems to thrive), both against stiff competition. Throw down the gauntlet to him.

Until Petty plays a full (good) Casey game, and Tommo plays poorly, they surely will stick with the current defensive group. We are really hard to score against, no need to mess with that.

And he was on the ground right to the final bell. Late in the game (maybe 5 mins to go)he seemed to limp for a bit after getting across to impact a contest.

Heart was in my mouth, but he was OK. They kept him on tbe ground.

They won't play petty this week.

But as soon as he is cherry ripe he'll 100% come back in.

In all likelihood it will be Tomlinson coming out

That’s the logical solution and I agree on Jordon having a great game against Port LDC. It really is a great problem to have, especially when I heard David King on radio say we are going at 70% compared to last year in 4 key stats.

...and they notice his 'mistakes'.  In focusing on 'mistakes' they ignore that all players make mistakes/have turnovers and ignore that Goodwin has repeatedly said we don't aim to be perfect, which tells me the odd error a player makes won't affect their selection or otherwise. 

 

It is difficult to tell on tv but I think Hunt could be playing the lockdown small defender role that Jetta used to play.  It looks like Bowey and Brayshaw have had the more attacking small defender roles.  If those observations are correct we aren't going to see Hunt in the highlight reels.  imv, he isn't given enough credit for what he adds to the team.

I'm with you Hunt stays.

His kicking of late has been spot on...it's one of the big improvements in his game.

Hunt has some deficiencies by foot and a little inconsistent with his distribution but still think he has some different ingredients to some of the other defenders so should stay.

This season he's currently =8th in terms of clangers. I guess defensive mistakes more noticeable ?

With GWS going in with the respected tagger in Matt De boer I think it's fair to say he'll go straight to Petracca without doubt.

I do wonder whether Luke Dunstan will come under consideration to come in to play some decent midfield time while Petracca may spend a little bit more time up forward and expose De boer and break the tag in a more meaningful way.

We know the impact Petracca can have up forward and one on one he can beat just about anyone in the comp.

Tom Sparrow as much as I like him as a player hasn't exactly set the world on fire even though I know he's playing a support role.

The big change to our fortunes started when the coaches really focused on our points conceded from back half turnovers, this is when we saw Frost traded for example, so I don't think it's a stretch for people to assume the selection committee wouldn't look favourably on turnovers coming out of defence.

Personally I don't think he'll be dropped (yet), but I wouldn't be shocked to see it happen given the above context.

My pick would be Petty back and Tomo forward that is unless JVR is showing enough to get selected.

Smith despite what many will say is not a good forward...gets in the way and jumps all over team mates.

Defensive mistakes are interesting. 

To me the key thing is where they happen.  If it happens around the d50 mt mark and/or in the corridor and it is an immediate turnover it will hurt us as the opp can almost immediately score. 

But if they are on the wings they won't hurt as much as a turnover will take the ops longer to get the ball back into scoring range by which time our defences have time to click in.  If it is becomes a stoppage it is a chance for us to attack.

Hunts mistakes are usually to the wing albeit at times OOTF but that still gives our defenders time to set up.

I would consider resting Gawn this week due to Pruess being rubbed out, giving Daws a worthy surprise.Furthermore  BBB will come in for TMac, whilst Duncan deserves a run as well.

Won't happen.  They're defenders and that's how the coaches see them.

He has played  a lot more pure one on one defence this year compared to last season, but I think Hunt is most valuable when he get the opportunity to use his pace, run off half back, carry and launch long into our forward half. Territory is his go. 

He did more of that against Port and looked more damaging as result.

He struggles a bit when running at full tilt to weight his short chip passes, but i think has improved in this regard this year, albeit i still have my heart in my mouth when he does kick short (he has poor technique - he drops the ball from quite a height)

Whilst acknowledging his weakness with disposal and in on on one situations, I like Hunt in the side.

I think his contribution  was a bit under rated last year and  thinks he really adds something positive to the mix, particularly in the home and away season where his pace can catch teams out, because he gets a bit more space to operate in when the pressure is not at finals like intensity.
