Steven May's hamstring syas Hi!.

Malthouse said post match Hawkins consistently pushes opposing rucks under the ball and never gets called out by umpires. Unanimous on ABC radio Hawkins infringed in last 1/4 and got away with it because of name and status. A younger player would have been called. Umpiring claims professionalism in the AFL. Times like these its called into question.

Still with Selwood rested after only 3 games, it augurs well for rest of finalists late in the season against the cats (oldest team to have ever played in the AFL last night if thats a guide (most players ever over 30 on the ground too)

i actually don't think they are; they've shown that they win at home and they play well when the game is on their terms, but when it tightens up  they can't quite get it done

their fixture should help them to top 4, but i don't see them as a threat away from the gabba

Constant metion last night by Ch7 team on how narrow the ground is and how well cats defend because its tighter.

By inference, good luck trying to defned on any finals grounds like Gabba, MCG, Adelaide oval with ageing list

..and they reckon that Umpires don't change the result of games.

This Coach and his brother clamping down on abuse of Umpires, from start of year. So  the AFL and Geelong will stop abusing Umpires provided they are free to orchestrate their own wins..

If I wasn't swearing, the umpiring would have left me speechless.   Hawkins only one of many.

While on the subject of Hawkins, I find his style of play very boring. A big bloke pushes/pulls his opponent out of the way and takes an easy mark and kicks  a goal. Yawn. Compare that to rapid chain of passes & handballs and a quick snap at goal or a flying pack mark.

Brisbane should be making big waves about what happened to them last night. The Umpires weren't just bad, they were pathetic, non assertive, non sensical decision making, as if one decision  was based on the speed approach to the ball, justified two hands in the back..

Danger goes to ground a lot. Anyone else noticing that?

Danger, when tackled, ALWAYS tries to go to ground to force a stoppage. He even does it when he only thinks he is about to get tackled, and ends up on the deck when he could have dished it off to a teammate. Last week against de Goey, half the reason for the "sling tackle" is that Danger was desperately TRYING to hit the deck.

You would think a player as talented as Danger would not need to resort to this cheap and lazy tactic.

I was sure the push in the back rule was adopted to protect the man in front from just being pushed forward out of a marking contest so the man behind can just take a chest mark. Had that one wrong on tonight’s interpretation anyway.  No it seems it’s more for when some guy has already fallen forward to the ground with the ball and the tackler falls into his back.

The actual rule:

18.3 PROHIBITED CONTACT
...
18.3.2 Free Kicks - Prohibited Contact
A field Umpire shall award a Free Kick against a Player when that Player makes any of the following Prohibited Contact with an opposition Player:
...
(b) pushes or bumps an opposition Player in the back;

That's it. Talk about open to "interpretation". But how it can be considered legal for a player to be driven into the turf full length by another player on his shoulders is beyond me. Players lying on other players, rolling over players, driving other players into the turf, has been rampant and until this year, never got paid. Even this year it's one in about 100.

The umpiring this year really is scandalous.

Made even worse by the fact that they've backed off on their scorched earth "no talking back" bullshlt. And their crackdown on "360 holding the ball" never got past training sessions in the pre season.

They have tried to crack down on throwing -- some have been paid this season! -- and holding the ball generally, but the lack of consistency seems to be worse than previous years.

The ump should have just kept his mouth shut  when Andrews questioned him about the push  because the explanation he gave was laughable. Something about momentum carrying Andrews forward as Hawkins stood his ground.

Why oh why are the umpires talking to the players at all? They've lost the plot when they have to explain decisions, nanny the players about the "protected zone", etc. Last week our friend Danger was taking a shot for goal after a mark. And trying to crib on the angle. The ump was trying to get him to move over. "Two metres, Patrick. Two meters. ..... Two metres. Two metres Patrick. Patrick!" Danger pretended not to hear. Finally he moved over. It makes the umps look stupid and weak.

18.8.2 Free Kicks - Umpires
A field Umpire shall award a Free Kick against a Player or Official who:
...
(e) fails to follow the instruction of an Umpire;

tangentially related to non-mfc clubs more than games - absolutely appalling bit of "journalism" from slobbo in the little paper wherein michael long basically dumps on cyril rioli with zero visibility of what he went thru cos he has had NOTHING to do with cyril for years

the story screams of jealousy that caro got a helluva scoop that's ramifications throughout the footballing industry and he went straight for a negative click-bait approach in response

It is not the inexplicable occurence that North are in front at quarter time but the reality of watching footy from the SCG is farcical.

Scandalous! You are being far too generous.

The extreme home ground advantage that Geelong, West Coast, Adelaide and to an extent Brisbane get should be called out for what it is - cheating.

Seriously, it's about time the AFL did something to address this issue in a more meaningful and transpartent way.  The professionalism and scrutiny of AFL players behavior to play the game and the attitude of players towards umpires is at a high level.  The same should be expected of umpires.

I guess making umpires truely professional for a start would help, but beyond that there must be some more intense data analysis the AFL could apply to weed out umpires that are most sensitive to wrong decisions in front of big home audiences and for those umpires to be demoted and overlooked for such games at the expense of those that are better performers, in order to improve the situation.

Yes of course they will have data on which maggots tend to crumble more easily under pressure - maybe with brother Scott in HQ they will actually send them to Geeking games?

If North  clean up their forward 50 entries, they win. They look much sharper than the Swans.

Sydney have a habit of losing to weak sides, a bit like us last year.

Last year they lost 7 home and away games, 4 of which were to Gold Coast, Fremantle, Hawthorn and St Kilda who didn't play finals.

This would be a pretty big boilover though, given how bad North were last week.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
