We wrapped this thread up in just over a 1000 posts. Thanks Gus for stopping it getting out of control and adding further inflationary pressure.

Great news but kinda weird comments from him on SEN the other day in hindsight!

Only if you read into his comments. The text was there - it’s a big decision, he will make it when he wants to, he has his own desires for his future.

Evidently, he wants to play for the Melbourne footy club and with some pretty good players for the rest of his career.

Some people are never happy, are they?

Onya Gus.  May you play in many more premierships with the mighty we now have

We now have 3 players on 6+ year deals.

As I said in my comment. the part you cut out.

I love Gus so im happy,  and hopefully it's front loaded to balance out with Trac and Oliver's contract.

Can someone explain to me what the hesitation is for signing players on 5+ year contracts?

We now have multiple Trac, Oliver and now AG but what is the problem, salary cap space in the future injury costing one player a season or two? Isn't signing longer deals allowing Melbourne to lower the amount they pay the players?

Love it, love it, love it

so impressed that the club has been able to resign a great core of players in long term deals…it really does set us up for the future

well done Gus - love that he’s committed to the Dees ♥️💙

Great news! A real boost for supporters and team alike… and perfectly timed to help us build momentum going into Friday night and remainder of season…

Another Demon champion for life!
❤️🏆💙

Quite a few here bought the silly smokescreen interview but I love you all anyway!

Go Gus!

Gus stays.

(Saw it in a dream, he was holding the cup at the G with three fingers in the air - premiership #3, of course)

Either way, my guys - we good.

Called it. I hardly ever remember my dreams, so when I do - they're bang on!

Now to the second part of the dream. Gus was there, so we have 2 more flags by 2028!

Hopefully (and most likely) well before 2028, of course.

Stephen Coniglio would be the cause for pause.

They are no brainers for me because you avoid a bidding war in the future and we basically can assure recruits and coaches that you have this talent for the decade so why wouldn’t you want to be here.

Injuries are brought up as a reason not to do this but they happen, it’s not like we wouldn’t keep a 30 year old Oliver if he did his knee (touch wood).

6 years is too long IMO,  hope they have front loaded it.

But Gus is my Fav,  so I'm also happy

Agree wholeheartedly. I love what he brings to the team so I’m happy that he is staying. I was also concerned about the negative impact if he had taken up another offer. Jackson returning to Perth is understandable and can be explained away.

My only concern is that long term deals have a financial risk particularly with a group of players on long contracts. And Gus does have a concussion history. That’s a risk but the club has no doubt taken all that into account.

Woohoo! On ya Gus!

To all of the people [censored] canning him on please go jump in a bin.

Huge signing for our culture ans team morale.

Didn't break the news on the podcast. Pathetic.

In all seriousness this is a great signing. Gus is a key cog in our successful culture and leadership. Versatile and good player onfield for sure, but this was a big cultural signing to keep the core together. Go Dees!

Absolutely fantastic news!

The only tiny downside is that both Angus and Clarrie's contract extensions were announced before away games.  As @The heart beats truesays, it would have been great to cheer their every touch in a home game immediately following the announcement.

I find it difficult to think the Brayshaw that gave this interview with Garry Lyon after the Grand Final is holding out for money or looking elsewhere to play midfield minutes (particularly at 2mins in).

It's our club Gus.

Gonzo we can watch this to our heart's content today with a smile!

It’s ironic, those who read into his interview with Garry and Tim, he was leaving for midfield time heard what they wanted to hear.

I said at the time I wasn’t worried by the interview, he was open and honest. Stated in the interview he was loving his time in the backline. Throughout his appearances in the media he’s been open and honest, calling out teammates and the overall performance, imploring the team first approach and do your job buy in needed for us to be there late in September.

He has shown over several years he’s a team first player and great clubman, but still he was doubted.

But those who jumped to conclusions, won’t learn the player/coach name and thread title will change but the responses will remain the same

And it protects the club so if they ever do want to leave which could happen one day, then it's all in the club's hands.

Great news - a real boost for the Club. How are all you bad-mouthers feeling now???? Some of the venom in this chat was unbelievable.

6 year deals are fine for players in their prime like Gus. By year six I sincerely hope we're trying to figure out how to deal with the contract of this 4 time premiership star who is past his best.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
