I see the attraction of Joel Smith with his athleticism & flexibility but his weaknesses were on display against Brisbane with under-developed footy nous. Too often allowed his opponent to get goalside, and flew at the ball without impacting on a few occasions.

Compare that to say Bowey who has lesser physical attributes but much better footy nous.

He was handed the chalice/challenge Charlie Cameron

Basically said Ratten had marked his card. Stress of trying to change that perception wore him down.

Asked by his manager Robbie D’Orazio, of CSM, “If the Saints offered you a contract, would you take it?“, Dunstan was emphatic.

“No. I said that in my exit interview. I said: ‘To be honest, I’d rather go get a job and move on,’” Dunstan said. “Just the stress … I’ve had for the last 12 months, especially of going in there. It feels good not knowing I have to go back and put up with it.”

That's right but looking back, how the hell could the Pies have fit him into their cap??

Same way they tried to fit Treloar,  Jaidyn Stephenson and Atu Bosenavulagi into the cap......while keeping Grunday, Moore, De Goey, Pendelbury etc.  ......

The Grundy contract was hilarious when it was signed and still delivering a couple of years later

I just can't see him being in the best 22 if Viney is fit. it feels like one or the other.

in saying that Dunstan is a more than solid backup for a very important role.

I can definately see him playing round 1 But not at the expense of Viney!

Harmes was on the interchange for the grand final… if we are injury free, Dunstan and Harmes could be in competition? Brayshaw (who would be starting inside mid-fielder in any other team) is a winger in our team after all. Dunstan to me would be an ideal player to turn into a multi-role player that can relieve wing/mids/flank positions IMO

Gotta say, for a man with supposed "serious" character flaws, Goodwin seems to be able to quickly gain the respect of players. Effectively every player he's recruited has said something along the lines of "I joined Melbourne because I was blown away by Simon Goodwin and his presentation".

That’s a good point, but it was a done deal! It was a year before the Treloar debacle so maybe they just hadn’t figured out what a complete mess they were in at the time.

After all this discussion about Luke Dunstan,  I still haven't learned the most important piece of information.

What is his nickname?

At a guess and for my lack of imagination...I'd say Dunny.

Just watched the 1st episode of "Show me the Money." on Stan.
All about player managers and their off season trading/drafting negotiations with clubs.
Anyway .... The Luke Dunstan negotiations with us gets a good look throughout the 1st show culminating in his signing.
He's stoked he's landed with us.

Doesn't feel Ratten rated him.
And from our point of view we know we had a good injury run last year and with VDB and Jones now gone we're looking to boost our inside mid stocks.

I watched it last night for the first time. His agent Robbie D'Orazio (Probably not correct) made it pretty clear he understood he was going to us to be a backup if we get injuries. As you say we recognised we'd had a very good run in 2021 and both the backup mids VDB and Jones are gone. Obviously figure it's too good to be true to have another season with such good luck on the injury front. Also had Tim Lamb, our List Manager on the phone saying we don't have any money but there would be incentives if he plays. So in that context a brilliant cheap pick up for that purpose and who knows what else he might be able to do. There was also a phone conversation with Goody asking him how his endurance is and he said it had improved a lot but he hadn't been given an opportunity to play as an outside mid. Said he was best suited as an inside mid and his best endurance was repeat burst power sprints. So a bit of a hint by him that he wouldn't mind being tried on a wing. Maybe if his fitness is good enough he could play Gus's defensive wing role and free up Gus to go into the guts if we have injuries.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
