You'd have to wonder what would become of the horse if we didn't have horse racing Can't really be kept as pets can they? Out the backyard? I don't think so No, the horse would quickly become a slaughter animal ... used to feed humans and dogs. Running wild? Would they be protected? As it stands, when considering how many millions of dogs and cats are 'put down' each year, the horse does ok. 1 Quote

In reality, the horse is quite a pampered animal, all things considered Quote

Even before this year, I've always thought that the VFL/AFL Premiership Cup is the best looking trophy in world sport. It's got just the right amount of gravitas along with dimensions that make it look weighty (literally) and worthy. The horse racing Melbourne Cup, on the other hand, has tradition on its side but always looks inferior to me, probably because of its size. It almost looks like a toy. 1 Quote

The first time I saw The Ashes 'Trophy' I thought it was a joke. Perhaps they can create a bigger 'trophy' worthy of that historical rivalry by encasing the little urn with The Ashes within it. It will still be The Ashes. Edited November 3, 2021 by Lucifers Hero Quote

LH it must be the smallest trophy in world sport. However I would rather it than a lot of the enormous things I see awarded in some sports. E.g. the Americas cup. Quote

Horses are born to run and have been ridden forever. They are the best looked after animals on the planet. Of course every now and again there is an injury, just as there is often in a paddock or field, when they are not racing. Of course though you are free not to support horse racing. Quote

So many different types of trophies or 'mounts' to stylishly enclose/display the urn. I digress. I backed Verry Elleegant, od. The Cup is the only time I bet as I know nothing about racing, so that I have a horse or two to barrack for. I always choose horses whose jockey wears predominately read and blue colours. As a result, I have a collect nearly every year. I chuckled last night when I saw this thread. Like you I thought the jockey name made it a 'must have' bet. That's not a bad idea but I'm assuming you (and others) know the historical story behind the Ashes The original urn is now too fragile to be travelled from Lords so a replica is given out these days But the original urn encased in a grandiose trophy (to act as protection as well) certainly has merit As for the Melbourne Cup, it could be marginally bigger but like the urn, it's an iconic trophy with a rich, rich history. I'm assuming that both trophies are the same size as when first presented (19th century) The NRL trophy is a bit oversized and the Stanley Cup (Ice Hockey) is rather large as well! The soccer world cup is only 36 centimetres tall (but is made up of 75% 18 carot gold and worth $160k) 1 Quote

But I also like the idea of the original (at the other MCC) being encased for protection. I believe it is now in their museum. 1 Quote

Yes you're right but the replica leaves me a little bit cold even though I know the original can't be moved It might be a case where the original urn is so fragile that it can't be moved at all ... but a replica within a nice looking trophy (gold?) would fit the bill The oddest looking trophy is possibly the Baseball World Series one. Not the sort of thing that can be tossed around! 1 Quote
