The Grand Final Rematch

We opened the season in 2000 against Richmond on a Wednesday night.

That was a period when the AFL went a bit off the rails and experimented with mid week games.

I was just thinking this and was wondering if I remembered right. It was the Olympics that year and all sorts of weird stuff was happening with the fixture.

Wednesday night footy at the G with crowds still beats watching a grand final on TV stuck in lockdown.

Agreed. Wednesday night, Friday night, who cares. It is still prime time free-to -air television for footy starved Melburnians. We play entertaining, thrilling footy, the TV ratings  will be through the roof in front of a 90K+ crowd. Our fans will love it, and so will our sponsors. Let's enjoy our well deserved blockbuster status. Can't wait !

It wasn't that long ago that we were the kings of the Sunday arvo twilight graveyard shift.

Just give us the Friday night game and stop trying to re-invent the wheel.

We deserve nothing less tbh.

Couldn't agree more. I would be there for Friday night but only a 10% chance if it's on a Wednesday night

I’ll be there either way but really Wednesday night is so hard!

We have a business to run in Ballarat and Thursday morning is a big day, Saturday is my one day off. This reeks of the AFL's quest for dollars. Friday night's game goes to ........... Collingwood vs Essendon!

With us starting our season on a Wednesday night it means that both ourselves and the Dogs almost have to play the following Thursday or Friday night fixtures.  Assuming that both the Anzac Eve and the QB are locked in (also assuming we only play the Pies and maybe Richmond only once) it means our Rd 2 clash is probably against either Carlton or Essendon.  Big games to kick off the season for us.

Yep and it will be away and they will get the "gate". Meanwhile, our home game against the Dogs will be diluted by at least 10% and likely more if it is on Wednesday night.

Just listened to Perty's radio interview today. Don't know where he's getting the impression that most fans are open to a Wednesday night season opener. I thought this was about making it up to all of us that couldn't get to the actual GF. Anyone outside a two hour radius of Melbourne who has a regular job and or young kids are likely to be highly inconvenienced.

Wednesday is a trash idea!

Agree. Say goodnight to a big crowd with no school kids.

Would have thought the GF replay would have been used to let as many fans go as possible and that is Friday/Saturday night if at night and not Wednesday night.

Another wonderful AFL decision.

The grand final rematch was a good idea for us but a bad idea for 7, who would prefer to save that game until later in the season.

I can see why they’ve countered. Honestly I’d prefer we now cave on the idea. But maybe we need the cash? It would be a big money spinner in terms of sponsor dollars.

Wednesday night works for me but I can see it wouldn’t for so many.

Judging by the feedback in this thread, this game doesn’t get more than 45K if it’s on a Wednesday night. Our opponents are not a high drawing side.

We couldn’t get even get high 50’s to Anzac eve on a Saturday night this year despite an 85% available capacity.

I’ll happily go to the game regardless but I think the AFL are getting too cute with Wednesday night scheduling and Pert should be going into bat for our loyal members who would collectively much prefer a Friday night game.

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w
