Rab D Nesbitt 8,955 Posted December 2, 2021 Posted December 2, 2021 The AFL has picked up what was a great idea by our CEO and wasted no time in trying to compromise it. 4 1 Quote

That was a period when the AFL went a bit off the rails and experimented with mid week games. I was just thinking this and was wondering if I remembered right. It was the Olympics that year and all sorts of weird stuff was happening with the fixture. 2 Quote
brendan 3,458 Posted December 2, 2021 Posted December 2, 2021 Needs to be Friday night or Saturday arvo, we will get a bigger crowd in 1 of those slots then what we would get on a Wednesday 5 Quote

Agreed. Wednesday night, Friday night, who cares. It is still prime time free-to -air television for footy starved Melburnians. We play entertaining, thrilling footy, the TV ratings will be through the roof in front of a 90K+ crowd. Our fans will love it, and so will our sponsors. Let's enjoy our well deserved blockbuster status. Can't wait ! 2 2 1 Quote

We have a business to run in Ballarat and Thursday morning is a big day, Saturday is my one day off. This reeks of the AFL's quest for dollars. Friday night's game goes to ........... Collingwood vs Essendon! 3 Quote
Mr Steve 3,820 Posted December 3, 2021 Posted December 3, 2021 Another kick in the guts for Country supporters. No way I can get down and back for work. 2 Quote
grazman 7,539 Posted December 3, 2021 Posted December 3, 2021 (edited) With us starting our season on a Wednesday night it means that both ourselves and the Dogs almost have to play the following Thursday or Friday night fixtures. Assuming that both the Anzac Eve and the QB are locked in (also assuming we only play the Pies and maybe Richmond only once) it means our Rd 2 clash is probably against either Carlton or Essendon. Big games to kick off the season for us. Edited December 3, 2021 by grazman Quote

Yep and it will be away and they will get the "gate". Meanwhile, our home game against the Dogs will be diluted by at least 10% and likely more if it is on Wednesday night. 2 Quote

Rab D Nesbitt 8,955 Posted December 3, 2021 Posted December 3, 2021 Just listened to Perty's radio interview today. Don't know where he's getting the impression that most fans are open to a Wednesday night season opener. I thought this was about making it up to all of us that couldn't get to the actual GF. Anyone outside a two hour radius of Melbourne who has a regular job and or young kids are likely to be highly inconvenienced. 3 Quote
HarpenDee 249 Posted December 3, 2021 Posted December 3, 2021 Putting the Wednesday night to one side i love that we've asked for the dogs round 1. The dogs will be coming for us. Good that the players know this and should help them focus hard in pre season. Quote
Demonstone 23,573 Posted December 3, 2021 Posted December 3, 2021 Wednesday night is traditionally known as "Hump Night", so we'll just have to do that to the Doggies. Again. 1 4 Quote
BDA 23,048 Posted December 3, 2021 Posted December 3, 2021 Playing this game on Wednesday night is absolute rubbish. Goddam AFL. And i'm surprised we agreed to it 1 Quote

Would have thought the GF replay would have been used to let as many fans go as possible and that is Friday/Saturday night if at night and not Wednesday night. Another wonderful AFL decision. DeeSpencer 26,675 Posted December 3, 2021 Posted December 3, 2021 The grand final rematch was a good idea for us but a bad idea for 7, who would prefer to save that game until later in the season. I can see why they’ve countered. Honestly I’d prefer we now cave on the idea. But maybe we need the cash? It would be a big money spinner in terms of sponsor dollars. Wednesday night works for me but I can see it wouldn’t for so many. Quote
Bring-Back-Powell 15,547 Posted December 3, 2021 Posted December 3, 2021 Judging by the feedback in this thread, this game doesn’t get more than 45K if it’s on a Wednesday night. Our opponents are not a high drawing side. We couldn’t get even get high 50’s to Anzac eve on a Saturday night this year despite an 85% available capacity. I’ll happily go to the game regardless but I think the AFL are getting too cute with Wednesday night scheduling and Pert should be going into bat for our loyal members who would collectively much prefer a Friday night game.
