In the end the choice in the AFL Draft is pretty simple....it is best player available Vs needs based player.

Hopefully, it's a combination of both for the Demons.

    Good point. I still think 17 and then turning 39 in to a future 2nd could work for them. Getting the young tall they need before the Fahey bid and banking a pick. 

    A future first certainly has more upside though.

    They could also trade down get some future material and then trade back in after Fahey has gone, a more convoluted way of getting to your original plan.

    Owens plays like Jake Stringer from my view.  An agile forward (190cm) who could rotate through stints in the midfield.  He’s a good player, through strong aerial skills and is good in the contest. I thought he’d be mid 2nd round (25-35 range) but given he wins strong contested footy, he may appeal to our 🏆JT⭐️.  

    The difference being, of course, that St Kilda "missed on Petracca" by choice. It's not like we stole him from under their nose.

    Picks: 17, 37, 49, 57 (likely to use three selections)

    A father-son is set to land at Melbourne for the first time since 2014 with Taj Woewodin nominated as a national pick, meaning if a bid doesn't come for the son of 2000 Brownlow medallist Shane then the Dees can automatically grab Woewodin with their last live selection. That appears the most likely outcome, with a bid not expected before Melbourne's third pick. Dandenong Stingrays forward/midfielder Judson Clarke could still be on the board at No.37 while the Dees have nominated Andy Moniz-Wakefield, an outside runner, through their Next Generation Academy and he could be a rookie shot. As could Anthony Caminiti, a 198cm forward who kicked five goals in his NAB League debut for the Northern Knights.

    Some interesting points.

    - Hobbs falling out of the top 10

    - Soligo, although selected at 30, was mentioned as an option for Giants second pick 13 (15). Would be the biggest bolter this late in the piece unless something else surprises.

    - Goater possibly sliding out of the first round.

    - For dees, Brown, Wilmot and Chesser around the mark. So more outside mid/half back types with pace.

    Odd that we'd go for a half back with Hunt & Tomlinson to return imo, even with Hibbo on the way out, unless we view them as a winger that is.

    Hobbs screams a Melbourne pick, reckon we'd desperately try to trade up if he slides.

    If Soligo is the go for GWS, they could well be happy to move back a few slots and get something else in the door while still landing him.

    Cal predicts its MFC choosing Blake Howes at 19.  Definitely  👍🏻🤞 

    He also notes Brown, Chesser, Wilmot as options - all good running half back defenders and either would be a good addition. 

    Whoever we pick , they are going to be very happy.  Dees have  a very good development program now and great club culture,  so lots of youngsters will be hoping to land in the red and blue. It’s going to be an exciting week for 50-60 young men in their quest to play in the AFL.

    Howes seems a great fit for need as well as talent. So if he’s available and JT was honest on the website today about considering needs it makes a lot of sense he’s right in their plans. 

    The half back flankers might be less of a need although we could do with a bit more depth. If Hunt replaces Hibbo after next year the depth is thin. It’s a lot to invest in the backline yet again but I’m still very open to Rivers, Bowey and Salem all being flexible. No reason they can’t play wing, half forward or on ball.

    The thing that stood out like dogs nads in his video was his lateral movement/change of direction.

    At that height and with his tank, that is a very enticing prospect. A difficult matchup.

    I notice in his phantom draft Cal has Howes height at 191cm and in previous draft rankings he’s at 190 so he must still be growing. Given his leap and marking ability are listed as his key strengths if he keeps growing he could be a weapon up front.

    Jason Taylor will be on AFL radio at 1.15 tomorrow for those that are interested. I'll be at work and will most likely miss it so a brief run down would be appreciated.

    I actually agree with you for once Dee we have some good flexibility on our list.

    Flexibility equals a good footballer IMO  and we can never have too many of those !

    Chesser is interesting.  Twomey has him at 24 but could go as high as 12.

    I've browsed 'Knightmare's' draft thread on bf and he doesn't have Chesser in his top 50 rankings.  Doesn't rate him

    It will be interesting to see where he is picked.

    Twomey doesn't throw names around which makes his mention of Anthony Caminiti linked to us quite interesting, albeit as a rookie.

    SUMMARY:

    In a draft crop dominated by midfielders, clubs may be more willing to take chances on developing talls a little higher up the order. In Caminiti's case, he'd be an ideal late-round or rookie option given his upside and rate of development, with exciting traits which can be enhanced at the next level. He is mobile and comfortable in possession, adding a bit of dynamism to go with his goalkicking and marking ability.

    It sounds like that with a bit of development he could be a very good forward.

    Knightmare spent 2 years bleeting that Melbourne made a big mistake not drafting Tom Green in ‘19 (simply because he didn’t rate Jackson as highly as others did).  
     

    Appears to have quietened on that front since The Grand Final.

     

    edit: he also failed to acknowledge the fact that Melbourne couldn’t have landed Green even if they wanted to

    Apparently Knightmare was caught out last year ranking some kids he hadn't actually watched in any capacity, as he didn't want to pay a subscription fee for that specific competitions live feed of games

Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack.       Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

    • REPORT: West Coast

      On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
