Alan Richardson was just asked about this on the DeeBrief podcast. He sounded extremely confident about Luke staying (mentioned he's involved in the actual process), and also mentioned that he had been involved at eight different football clubs and has never seen a player of that size move around the field like Luke does.

Of course we all want to keep Jackson and most likely will...

The compensation package that another club would have to provide to the MFC to get Luke Jackson out of our club hasn't been seen before!

Jeremy Cameron was 3 first rounders (13, 15 & 20)

Jackson would be significantly higher again based on age profile, talent, the number of years of service remaining...

You could also argue that Cameron is past his peak and overrated as well.

3 first rounders sounds great but in reality those picks that year yielded: Holmes, Stone and Powell

they could turn into decent players but not even in the same ball park at LJ. Even if significantly more, the picks won’t go near LJ

Luke Jackson leaving Melbourne now is akin to Matthew Mcconaughey leaving a singles party with the most beautiful ladies in the room for dust. It wont happen.

The rest of the competition was also hobbled by the introduction of GC and GWS at the time scooping the best draft picks.
Meanwhile the Dawks cherry picked the best players on the market to fill the holes in their list.

That is very true...The introduction of GC and GWS made things very difficult.

We also learned the lesson about cherry picking with Lever, May and Langdon.

Too bad he couldn’t drop anchor before “falling” through a plate glass window. He could hardly get on the park after that.

I think Tingay played in a final v St Kilda in 1998. He really smashed it in that game.

Frawley was out the door after round 2 of his last year.  He was played up fwd thereafter.

Howe priced himself (or his manager did) out of contention.  Declined to be traded to GCS (don't blame him there) and found a spot with his childhood hero, FIGJAM, reportedly at the same $ we had offered, in the role we had offered.

In return we got Brayshaw and later replaced Howe with Lever.

Frawley got his premiership medal, Howe is a bit of a hero at the Pies.  We got Brayshaw and later got Lever.

Brayshaw and Lever have their premiership medals.  Howe is still hoping.

Very happy with the outcome.

Hear, hear!

My thinking is he'll get 3-5 years here on some really good coin (maybe less than he'll get elsewhere, but that's the premiership levy, then, as a bona fide superstar (well on his way), make bank at home for the second half of his career, when we may be at the tail end of our premiership window, and Freo is MAYBE in theirs.

Like the Gus situation the consensus between the parties here could just lie in the new bargaining agreement that is due to drop soon and what the numbers on a long term contract might look like to help keep most or all of the current squad on our books.

In what way Jontee? I felt he was going to stay until being spewed up on by our current, bogan captain* in China.

*who I love dearly.

Well this is a Demonland fact (= just my opinion).  From day 1 he did not look happy in a MFC jumper and did not involve himself in some of the programs set up for the new recruits.  He seemed to be a loner which is strangefor a team sport.

It also would not have helped that he walked into a club that was a complete disaster on and off the field.

Jackson would be hard pressed to find a club more stable or in a better on field position that ours right now.

Yes it is a tremendous incentive when you think that signing Luke for another two years, could lead to us winning 4 flags in a row; 2021. 2022. 2023. and 2024. Even if he does go elsewhere post 2024, personally I'd take that.

Geez, the media is really chasing this story... shouldn't have surprised me but the 7 digit number is now being mentioned in tandem with Luke. The kid has played 32 games. I have no problem pumping the kid up as he has shown us a lot at very early on his career, but this is getting a bit ludicrous.

In contrast here is a lengthy discussion mainly by Mooney and Lewis who are encouraging him to sacrifice the big $ for now as they will come in time.  luke-jackson-analysis-out-of-contract.  It is one of the more considered articles I've seen on his contract.

Goodwin said in his press conf the club is comfortable with the contract talks and Jackson 'will be paid what he is worth over time...' (or words to that effect).

I have little doubt he will stay and will not get the big bucks in this contract.

Exactly.  Good luck to his manager selling the idea of now  joining Freo (why?) and Eagles (basket case on the slide).

But professionally he'll make the eagles move in 5 years  , with 3 flags under his belt, and all Dees supporter's best wishes, mine included.

If WC offer him $8M on a 6-7 year deal, then the why come to WC is pretty clear. He doesnt seem to be that type of person, but can anyone really blame him if he did take the carrot?

CYB he will be wealthy wherever he plays. Over his career he could earn $6 to $12 million. For me there is no difference, so I would chase flags. And before you say I'm crazy consider how long and well you could live on $6 million well invested.

Over his lifetime he will probably earn more off field than on.

Everyone is different ManDee. There is nothing certain in footy so it depends on his character tbh. He might be risk averse and hence take the road of securing his life now with a more lucrative long term offer. I agree that his future is bright which ever road he takes, just the one with ours will probably earn him a bit less in $$$ in the long run. 🤷‍♂️

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
