The Geelong V West Coast game in round 22 was a sliding doors moment and may have changed the course of history.

Geelong were all over them all day until the late in the game where the Eagles snuck over the line to finish 3rd and banish us to 4th and an elimination final against Hawthorn.

Had WC lost and we finished 3rd we would've played Collingwood, a side that we had a fantastic recent finals record against. Collingwood were pretty ordinary in their week 1 final draw against West Coast, so I would've backed us to beat Collingwood and then face an Essendon who we had the wood over in 1990.

Lots of woulda coulda shouldas, but we had to go the long route if we were to win the 1990GF, and it cost us in the first semi against West Coast.

Ahhh BBP maybe it was all meant to be … a long series of interlinked events over 30 years  culminating in the glory of last Saturday night!!!

This the year that Garry Lyon in his book says the Dees should have won.

No clear stand out team, Melb had a good team and good record but had to travel to Perth which cruelled their chances.

I don't mind Perth so much anymore

I think that West Coast 1990 semi was at Waverley rather than Perth. We beat them in Perth in the 3rd last round.

I could be wrong but I think we went in as favourites in the semi Vs WC but were never in it and may have had a couple of key injuries.

We actual played West Coast at the Waverley Park where we played our poorest football and had a dreadful record of wins.

By 1/2 time the game was like 2018 we were nowhere WC 10 goals 5 points to MFC 2 goals 8 points we came home well in the last quarter but they won 19 goals 16 points to 15 goals 10 points lost by 30 points.

I was at that game and remember being reduced to tears. I honestly could not believe that we lost that game

It was a horrible day.  Lyon withdrew with injury after being cleaned up at training by Strawbs O'Dwyer.  The real reason we missed top 3 that year was our 127 point thrashing at the hands of North Melbourne.  It blew our percentage apart and despite 16 wins we finished 4th.  That year we beat Hawthorn in consecutive weeks and beat top of the table Essendon twice.  We beat the Eagles in Perth and as has been mentioned earlier defeated Collingwood in both the 88 and 89 finals series.  Such a waste.

So long as we don't play WC.

the 1990 GF was so soft everyone in the finals reckons they should have won.

Great trivia question

Who kicked 5 goals in the 1990 Grand Final?

A: Essendon 😂

Playing Whorethorn twice in 2 weeks (for 2 wins) took all the energy we had.
IF we had finished Top 3 that year, it could very easily been a GF win

If you haven’t seen the Round 22 or Elimination Final against Whorethorn, they are both on YouTube

Brutal Games….

As i read this I’m happy to report that thinking about that game, and the massive missed opportunity of a flag, no longer hurts.

after 31 years i finally  discovered an antitdote ;-)

I remember it all.

I was at those two Hawthorn games, if I remember rightly wasn't one of them Michael Tucks 400th game or something like that? I think the previous one was a milestone game for Ricky Jackson.

It is so good to be able to recall these memories with the premiership now in our hands. It doesn't feel so wasted or painful like it used to.

This team will be remembered forever, they gave us back our dignity as supporters

In fact that was the year that West Coast drew with Collingwood which gave us a bye in the week after our semi final against Hawthorn.

In addition Essendon rested  players for the last round, then had a week off as the top team in the five had, and then had an additional week off because of the draw.

It really was a great opportunity for us and the game against West Coast was a gigantic disappointment.

Not in the finals they didn't.

Lyon withdrew before the game.

I know you've posted this before SWYL but we got a bonus week off because of the draw.

Correct, I seem to recall it was a pretty miserable day all round at Waverley. Opportunity missed as we could have snatched a flag as I thought the Magpies were a pretty ordinary premiership side. So maybe we were thinking a week ahead against WC

The fact that the only time Collingwood won a final(s) between 1985 and 2001 was in 1990 would support your theory that the Pies were an ordinary premiership side.

They had some stinking bad losses to West Coast and Hawthorn and lost to Essendon and Hawthorn twice that year.

However history proves that they got it together from the West Coast qualifying final replay and never looked back.

Yes I know. But we were still out of gas. Those 2 Whorethorn games were absolutely full on. They were a serious side at that point

That 1990 final against WC was like the recent Port/Bulldogs game. We were expected to win easily but didn’t show up. Game lost at half time. We came back hard in the second half but we kept bleeding goals. There was a copious amount of bathwater drank leading up to that game.

Shot ourselves in both feet when we got murdered by North and lost over 10%.

Sumichs kick another sliding doors moment. That goes through we play Collingwood in the Semi instead of west coast and probably at the G.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
