Yep, all of that. It was the recovery. A rare thing, such reflexes. Think of how much effort you put into going for the mark, and then to rebound like that. As John just said, it was the spark.

Was a great gather at pace from Harmes and then classic line breaking Harmesy burst away from the pack and deliver deep into forward 50.  Top reading of the play and timing from Fritta to get on the end of it as well.

As has already been said this is a fabulous thread that reconnects with those wonderful (but incredibly short) periods in the GF that contributed to the ultimate prize. The joy in the descriptions of each goal is palpable. Fritta, Clarry, Trac, Gus, Lingers.... I just stop to think what a list of options.

I am not going to pick one until I have watched them all again.

Ps: Last night I was watching part of the PF and my partner said it still doesn't feel real given how we won those games. I cant wait for lock downs to end so i can to have my fellow dees over for a footy marathon.

Mine was Gus who walked back ,ball in hand, as we listened to BT preaching that he hadn't turned and looked at the goal as if it was a mortal sin....then he turned around,ran in and slotted the middle.

Mine was Brayshaw’s. Why? Because it got us back in the lead. Once I knew we were in the lead again, I knew they would fight to stay there and they did. I just never could have guessed what was about to happen next

Righto ....under 12's,was that the geography teacher filling in after school?

Choco may have mentioned looking for the player you plan to kick to because that seems to have improved, but goals don't move ..which isnwhy players can snap goals blind

I am pretty sure Gus knew both where he was on the ground  and where the goals were,  because he turned around and seemed to look straight at them  before he ran in  aiming  the ball at the middle of said target.

My votes? The 'Bang! Bang, bang, bang!' trilogy.

And I suspect that call will sneak into the pantheon of Grand Final commentary moments, beside 'Jesaulenko, you beauty!', 'Leo Barry, you star!', etc.

Three goals in particular that had me off the couch:

1 Spargo's goal in the first where Jacko intercepted after Kozzie made them nervous. Great fwd pressure.

2. Fritta's second in the third quarter where he attempted a speccy landed on his feet, gathered with one hand and goaled. Incredible This is where the belief returned.

3. Sparrow's off one step goal from 50. Just magnificent football with a good shepherd on the line from TMac.

The bang, bang, bang, bang goal from Oliver was pretty special as well!

One thing I've noticed about Brayshaw's calling is that he has, over time, made an obvious effort to call the game more like a soccer commentator. Not radio-style or horse-racing style where every act, every possession is described even though we can see it ourselves. Just calling players' names and keeping a flow going in accord with the state of the game.

And he summed it up right there. Bang bang bang is what happened, and that quickly. (TKO to the Demons!) I've been listening to the various radio calls and they were all wowed by what they saw, but Brayshaw really got the essence of the moment.

It's a basic football fundamental, IRW.  If you're facing the goals, you may spot an unattended team mate in a far better position than you or the opponent on the mark may not be paying attention, allowing you to run forward into space. 

Both of these scenarios increase the team's chances of scoring a goal which can't happen if you have your back to the play and therefore don't know what's happening up ahead.

 

I had the privilege of speaking with Ray Shaw recently and discussing the Grand Final - he’s pretty impressed with the current ream and its youth I think it’s fair to say.

I was curious as to his take on the Harmes to Fritsch goal that started it all - if that hadn’t happened would Melbourne inevitably won anyway?
 

His take : absolutely not - momentum is a huge thing in football and if that hadn’t happened quite possibly the game would not have turned the way it did (he also observes that  the 6-6-6 rule prevents the other side from blocking the game up as would have happened in years gone by).

 

so for  me - Bayley Fritsch’s first goal half way through the third quarter when we were 19 points down after our bad position at half time had actually got worse - with an special and honourable mention to Harmes.

Not being widely reported enough that Bailey Smith fumbled during this pivotal clearance... in my opinion 🤣

you could also argue that jack viney fumbled the ball just prior to smith, but no-one mentions that.

i don't know why smith's fumble gets so much comment. there are hundreds of similar fumbles in the game  and anyway if he didn't fumble he would likely have been tackled or got off a rushed panic kick.

Favourite goals. 
 

1. Oliver running goal to end the third quarter. It killed off the dogs (bang bang bang). Jackson’s gather and handball was first class. Oliver’s salute showed we will on top now and charging.  

2. Petracca goal from the boundary line - inside out banana - 3rd quarter (bang)

3. Fritsch goal - mark attempt then recovered ball to kick his 2nd goal in 30 seconds - 3rd quarter 

4. Brayshaw goal after courageous mark. Dead straight kick.  Put us in front. 

5. Sparrows goal after centre square clearance. The nail was being hammered in (bang bang) 

6. Fritsch mark and goal in the 3rd quarter to stop the dogs run. It was a pressure kick and he nailed it to give  us hope 

7. Petracca goal off one step from outside 50. What a talent!!  It started the game. 
 

8.  Langdon goal in the last.  He started deep in defence with a possession and then ran and ran and ran down to follow the ball before accepting a pass in the forward pocket. The Stevie-J snap from the pocket just capped  it off. 
 

9. Ben Brown mark and goal at the start of the last quarter.  5 goals up and we could smell blood. 
 

10.  Spargo goal in the first quarter after the pressure of Kozzy to chase and chase to create a turnover. No stat for Kozzy but worth the applause. 
 

11. Salem goal in the last quarter. Evades two Bulldogs creates space and 25 metre snap goes through. Topped off a magnificent match for him.

Not sure about that. If you're relying on the year to remind you, how would you know if it was 20 goals or 21 in 2021? If we'd kicked 20 goals and 21 behinds, then I would agree.

Having said that ..... Both games and the Grand Final in particular were spectacular games
Even the neutrals were blown away by the vulgar display of power football.

And on a different tangent I reckon Petracca is one of those names like Jesalenko and Bususto back in the day.
Could also see the call of "PETRACCA" getting some air time.

You've made me think, Fork: I wonder what it would have been like to witness it as a neutral, with no inkling (like we maybe had) of its possibility? I'm almost (almost) jealous, as I have FOMO on steroids about any buzz that this year and its climax can go on offering, and I wonder what they might have felt.

Usually when the GF is such a one-sided affair neutrals will find it boring. But every neutral that I know, which is everyone I know coz no Dees fans in my life, except for everyone here on DL, but anyways, everyone said they loved it because of the exceptional skills on display. And because they were happy to see us win (finally).
