POSTGAME: GRAND FINAL vs Western Bulldogs

I’m watching the replay. The last minute of the 3rd quarter is as close to absolute pandemonium as you’ll ever see on a football field. It was literally ridiculous. I’m pretty sure i’ll never see anything like that again.

I’m so glad I got to see us play like that in my lifetime.

This is such a good feeling.

I see a few showing a bit of pity for the Dogs.

They have one of the most detestable players I have ever seen in Liberatore.

He can suck a fat one, with his tough-guy garbage.

Eat [censored] Dogs.

It’s the difference between them and us.

I want to be hated because we have the best team going around not because our supporters start behaving like some of the other teams supporters.

Let the team do our talking

That patch in the 3rd quarter. Go back and look at it again and again. Jackson, Viney, Oliver and Petracca all bullocking, following up, fiercely ball hunting, and sprinting away once we had clear possession. All 4 of them. That is the best midfield footy I have ever seen: BREATHTAKING!!

But I have to keep coming back to Brayshaw. He remains my favourite player. His endless gut running, taking body hit after body hit, and THAT mark and goal, and for the first time in a long time we clearly saw his skill.

Gus was massive in the third. Watching the third quarter now without the live emotions and his work rate is off the charts. Couple of crucial spoils back in defence also. Simply an amazing performance.

Apparently he was concussed but not tested according to Heater and Daisy show, but not sure of the reliability of that info. Looking at the event though, it wouldn't surprise.

Need to concussion test anyone watching that show too :roos:

Not disagreeing, but that 3rd Quarter Turn around was Clarry and Trac (and Luke) working together. Without that we don’t win.
Don’t forget Clarry took a heavy knock early

Also in the middle of that 3rd quarter Viney got the initial clearance to Harmes who then bustled it out to..... well someone*.  And we never looked back from there

I loved Gus’s game but I have also really loved the emotion of his post match interviews. The selflessness and sacrifice of his game on the wing this year is one of the reasons we have gone from a team of champions to a champion team.

That Gus has sacrificed so much over the last 2 seasons for the sake of the team, and then plays his best individual game of the year in the Grand Final is such a great reward for him.

Does anyone think Bontempellis head high bump on Oliver will get looked at in the 2nd qrtr?

Not as much as Gawn being slung to the ground by Daniel whilst over the boundary line, with Max's head hitting the astroturf.

That said, we should give Daniels a thank you card cos immediately after that play was the beginning of the end with Harmes kick to Fritta! 😄

For a guy who is normally so articulate, his first interview while on the lap was completely incoherent, it was hilarious. His brain was scrambled in the same way mine was. It just added to the moment for me.

I think I've watched Tracs dribbling goal in the 3rd quarter from the pocket a dozen times, not sure if it's because of the sublime disposal, or because of Kozzie's hit on Dunkley... soooo good to watch!

At the end of the third, we goaled at 00:47, 00:30, then 00:17.

That's 30 seconds for 3 goals.

That's just ludicrous and throws Leigh Mathews' 'goal a minute theory' out the window.

JUNK TIME GOALS.

How often has our club given up a goal in the dying stages of a quarter. Almost like clockwork over the decades its happened like a curse proving itself.

This years has been very different and the last three goals in the last minute of the third were the sweetest junk time goals ever.

The dogs looked powerless and we just slammed home not one..not two but THREE in under 60 seconds.

I felt the flag coming home after those.

The best day of my life (never married, had children.)
Just got home. Last night was amazing. It was like I resorted to childhood again. Spent all night cuddling up to dad. Being all we’ve been through this year it was very emotional. Great that my uncle could experience this as time is running out for him. Can’t wait to visit my brothers once these restrictions end.

Still having trouble digesting this. Seeing our boys in our colours up on the podium with the premiership cup. It still doesn’t feel real.

Junk time is at the end of 4th quarter when 1 team is so far ahead  extra scores dont change result  , red time is at end of 1st three quarters

Yeah fair enough, I was a bit harsh.

I actually like the Dogs. Just can't stand the "poor us" narrative. They are too good a side to go with this garbage. They should be proud, and ditch the us against the world stuff.

And don't feel sorry for them. They will be back at the top end next year also.

The turn around in the last two months to realise our scoring potential has been amazing.. whether that is synergy between the forwards, or something else I am not sure.

Anyway here are some lovely bits of data or data (depending on how you say it).

The rise in form of Ben Brown has had a lot do with it. Doesn’t need to kick massive bags, but takes so much attention away from the other forwards, brings ball to ground for the crumbers and creates a heap of space by leading to allow us to pick a target.
Also the amount of goals we’ve kicked from centre clearances via our midfield these past few weeks is insane. Sparrow from 48m? Jackson was 45m?

And people wanted him traded. He is such an important player and a massive part of our on field and off field leadership

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
