The AFL had a chance to send a clear signal, across all levels of football, that umpire abuse in any form wouldn't be tolerated. Absolutely bottled it.

Too right they missed.  A "clear message" would have started at 6, plus a "good behaviour bond" of a further 3 if he ever spoke to or gestured in an intimidatory way to an umpire over the remainder of his career.

That, plus as an aside, clear notice that persistent arguing or haranguing (which would include removing the mouthguard as per Mitch Robinson) an umpire results in a free kick, plus 50 regardless of the player or the match.

So the precedent has been set. Meanwhile, local footy struggles to recruit enough umpires as young umpires tire of the abuse. I wonder if there's a correlation🙄

If it was Tommy Bugg they would have told him to stay in bed and then posted him his torn-up registration papers.

Tom Bugg would have been flogged in a public square.

Local Footy is you have a total16 weeks of suspensions it is life ban, that is an AFL Vic Rule

Deregistration is only practiced in country and suburban football competitions; it is not practiced by the AFL as of 2019

Was that Bottled or Botched? I think the latter

Do they take history into account when sentencing?

Clearly not. Otherwise Tobes would have been banned for life by now.

And missing the Grand Final (if they make it) is sanctimoniously seen as equivalent to 322 home and away games.

Which will inevitably lead to appeals for the 3 weeks to be reduced to 2 weeks so that Tobes can play the granny if they make it,

The last one with Heppell happened on Sunday.  It was in play, he took several steps toward the umpire and must have seen him yet pushed him in the chest and upper arm which were forceful enough to force him back. Went round him only after the umpire had been pushed out of Heppell's path.  Didn't try to pull up.  Didn't look back.  Didn't apologise.  Not even cited by MRO.

And before folks pile on, I fully recognise the difference with the Toby incident.  Just surprised the MRO didn't even have it in the 'events reviewed' category and explain why no penalty was appropriate.

Every 8 games in his 176 game career,

Clearly previous fines and suspensions are no deterrent.

Novel thought - how about fines only for those fringe players on base payment - all other offences get a suspension as $100 or $1500 clearly means nothing to the likes of Greene, Dangerfield, Selwood, Hawkins, Mumford.

Ahhh. Tommy Lahiff.  I remember his and Harry Beitzel at Waverley one day (not long after the metric system replaced yards, feet and inches).

Harry:"Waverley is 20% larger than the MCG"

Tommty:"Is that in meters, Hawwy?"

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
