Plus Freo don't need pick 6 for Lachie Neale anymore. Makes things slightly easier. Players will nominate the club they want to go to. If he nominates us and we can't come to an agreement with Freo, he will just end up at North and Freo will end up with nothing. North wouldn't be the worst back up plan for Cerraย

I think he's a Richmond supporter.

Would this year's pick 33 plus next year's 1st get it done?

Do we have the cap space? Jones and Jetta retire. Maybe shuffle a couple of contracts, eg. extend Tmac on lesser amount.

If we have presented to him and his management then I take it we are keen to get him.

Think weid not locking in a spot is more of an indication of where he is at and not the strength of our key fwds, I doubt very much if anyone currently performing as a kpp on a senior list on a consistent basis would have any trouble keeping one of tmac or Ben brown out.ย

If you look at our list we have the wholeย best 22 and then some locked in for next year and beyond, the only players yet to sign on are not in the team on a regular basis. I donโ€™t foresee any one under contractย asking to go in this years trade period unless we push them out. To get Cerra a top 10 player would need to be traded like a viney or Langdon or Salemย or a youngย high pick like Jackson or Pickett. Which means a zero net gain. No fringe player would bring in enough to get a deal done even with picks we have. If it could great but Iโ€™m trying to be realistic.

The alternative is alchemy using 2022 2st rounder and multiple 2nd/3rd rounders in 2021/22 to unlock a top 10 pick in trade with team needing points for father/son and/or academy picks. Players would have to be traded out to secure the 2nd and 3rd rounders.ย

Thatโ€™s ok. His name is not worth getting right or even knowing.ย

I think thereโ€™s 2 ways to look at the prolonged announcement:

1. Heโ€™s waiting for the season to be over so certain clubs can negotiate more vigorously once they know what they have to play with, orย

and I suspect this is the more likely optionโ€ฆ

2. He is waiting for the only club that can afford him to actually appoint someone to their key roles, so said club can then talk about how Cerra is โ€˜so confidentโ€™ in their โ€˜new futureโ€™ that he agreed to come on board. ๐Ÿคข

He canโ€™t go there now. Whatโ€™s he going to? Some witches hats and a colour scheme?

Agree that option 2 is pretty likely. He is not going to confirm before he can meet with the new coach.ย

I don't remember clearly if official announcements aren't released until the trade period starts and usually the team is speculated or have players nominated clubs pre trade period?

My gut feeling is that nominations can't be officially announced until the start of the trade period.

ย

From my experience a lot of moves are already set in stone in a lot of details but you never know, things can and do change. Meaning that the decision is probably already made they are just waiting for the right time to release the info.

I would love him at the Dees but i can't see it happening.

I was pretty certain Ralphy is a dees supporter, you wouldn't think it though as a lot of his stuff is anti-melbourne. Ralphy constantly gets it wrong with his dees reporting though, the only one that gets reliable information out of Melbourne is Jay Clark.

He's definitely a Richmond supporter. Has regularly said it.

How could Cerra seriously be looking at a without a coach or a CEO, or a football program for that matter? They canโ€™t even have that much room in their cap given what they are reportedly giving mid range players like Martin and Williams. Not to mention Mackay and Cripps.

He wants to go home. That's his main objective.

Doesn't matter who or where, he'll get compensated well and just get home to be with family.ย

Sometimes footy is simply a job to some.

Yep. Just a shame when someone has all the attributes to be more than just a regulation role player, and chooses not to do that.ย

Football seems like a really difficult career choice to make, only to then phone in it. A lot of effort if thereโ€™s no reward. But I guess weโ€™ve all taken jobs at crappy places because the money was great.ย

Bailey Laurie in the middle or do you reckon we target someone else?

I feel like if we don't get Cerra we will just reset our draft hand, maybe try secure some future picks off other clubs to give us more bargaining power next year.

We really don't need anything and have some reasonable players tied to the club we can nab for lower picks that can take the rookie spots.

It will be a big show of faith for Sparrow, Jordon, Bowey and Laurie if we do end up cutting a few of the older heads, it means there position is more secure.

Apologies if Iโ€™ve missed it, but why only Carlton? If itโ€™s true that theyโ€™re all heโ€™s interested in apart from us having a cheeky crack, why them?

Why not, you know, a proper club? With a coach, CEO and any semblance of direction. I was baffled when Saad and Williams went there, wanting to go there now seems like absolute madness to me.ย
ย

Why arenโ€™t Hawthorn or North an option? Why arenโ€™t Richmond moving some deck chairs to replace old deck chairs like Cotchin and Edwards and the injury prone meatball?

Have I missed something?

So this is how I see it. Journo's get 95 percent of their stories from player managers. Ralph gets told there are two possible scenarios: Melbourne or Carlton. Ralph approaches Alan Richardson who confirms we are interested in Cerra but will have nothing further to say until the business of finals is over. Ralph feeling pressure from his editors knows he needs to put stories out there because Cerra is the biggest name so far in the upcoming trade period. With no information coming from Melbourne, Ralph can only speculate and because he is not able to think laterally and wants to reinforce the ridiculous perception that he is a news breaker. He settles for the most obvious position: Melbourne are out of the race because they don't have a first round pick.

The fact that Melbourne have shown interest means they have something in mind when it comes to picks. It could be a player/s (Weed, etc) or it could be a future picks as Demoniac mentioned in an earlier post.

One or more of:ย  lack of interest/ lack of trade currency/ lack of sal cap.ย ย

Ess were interested but dropped out when they realised how good their midfield really is and prefer to spend the $ on the players they have.

Rich dropped out when they realised how poor their midfield is and decided to use their very juicy draft picks for new talent.

ย

Wonder if Goodwin and the recruitment team will take advantage of not being in quarantine and go and meet Cerra face to face this time instead of the zoom they conducted the other week?

Also, if he is looking for $700k then perhaps Carlton is the only team dysfunctional enough to pay it. He is a talented kid but seriously? What is this, his 3rd or 4th year? He is hardly the kind of elite game changer youโ€™d give that kind of coin to. Maybe in a couple of years, but not at this point.

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, weโ€™ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.

Long ago and far away, the Melbourne Football Club replaced its coach in difficult circumstances after the team suffered a devastating loss. In the aftermath, I penned the following words: โ€œThen came the politics, the intrigue, the axing, the sound of the football world laughing at a club, the circling of the media vultures, the reinvention of history, the anger, the irony, the pathos, the hurt on the face of the president, the dignified departure of the coach, and the determination of the newly appointed caretaker.โ€ Today, weโ€™re back in the same place although oneย difference here is that the coach who was terminated this time is Simon Goodwin, the man who four years ago

  • REPORT: West Coast

The Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, opens with, โ€œIt was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, โ€ฆโ€ย  This phrase highlights many of the significant challenges that humanity encounters in life, ranging from experiencing remarkable highs to living in times of despair. This is a concept that should resonate with all supporters of the Melbourne Football Club this morning as they reflect on its comprehensive 83-point victory over the struggling West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium. The outcome proved beyond doubt that they are the worst of clubs and that we are the best of the worst.
