If I start with a red paper clip and keep trading up, do you think we can get Adam Cerra?...

Even MacGyver would be proud of that one.

Hopefully the talk of trading out a required player not too distracting in the build up to the game.

For years I watched as the top team/s managed to wheel and deal and it annoyed me greatly, hopefully our time is now.

My god this would be a HUGE get for the footy club.

Still remember Darren Bewick his Eastern Rangers coach saying he could potentially be in the same calibre as Christian Petracca who he also coached.

If anyone watched Cerra this year would know he makes our midfield go up a whole new level next year.

Knowing the way we operate and how we are now seen in the AFL, if the player wants to come to us and we want him, we will get it done.

It may mean letting another player or two leave, especially if it is to go home, but as long as they are not an untouchable then we will do the deal and look to replace the ones leaving in the draft or through other smaller trades or delistings, FA's etc.

We are now a destination club and that really helps.

The managers and their players are far more keen and help to get the deals done.

The main thing is that the core group stays and you keep improving it and the culture isn't harmed. Players leaving for more opportunities is not a culture buster. It in fact may help build it even stronger as we are seen as a , successful, smart and compassionate club.

Sam Edmond on SEN just said Melbourne have made a strong pitch to Cerra and also thinks the delay in Cerra nominating a club has Melbourne right in the mix. Financially we can get the deal done we might have to trade out a required player to help get the deal done.

Melb - Weid + 34 to suns

Suns - 22 + 43 to melb

Melb - 22+42+43 to dogs (1618 points compared to 1161 for Darcy)

Dogs - 14 to melb

Melb - 14 + 2022 1st (18) to Freo

Freo - Cerra to Melb

Surely Melbourne wouldn't go to the effort of trying to convince Cerra to join us if they didn't think a trade was possible. They will make it happen if he decides to join.

And then we have to pay him ........probably overs .

Probably Nathan Jones & Nev Jetta are close to retiring so that may give us $$ room, but.......Jackson, Rivers ,Jordon, Bowey ,Sparrow start to move into bigger kids $$$

We spend our time developing younger players e.g. Chandler, Sparrow, ANB, Jordon, Bowey , Rivers, Jackson and then just throw our development away for a "might be".

Isn't it amazing that a player at another club is always better than what we have got . Our Midfield is the last area needing strengthening. ( Our 3rd best midfielder is playing on a wing, our ex Captain has modified his game to play compatible football inside our structure)

Given the age profile (and upside ) of our current list there is a lot of improvement to come and this GROUP is compatible

Cerra might end up a good player but I find it hard to see where he fits in, Petracca and Oliver are clear 1 and 2, Viney isn’t going anywhere and is a solid 3rd mid, Harmes, Sparrow and Jordan are all fighting for whatever is left over, Cerra if he came would be fighting for those same minutes.  If dogs and gws have shown anything over the last few years is you can have to many star mids, someone need to be the roll player and sacrifice there game which I’m not sure someone like Cerra would be happy to do, the former 3 are happy to do this every week.

I’ve got a fairly good source that says, at the moment he will not be at Melbourne next year.

Cerra waltzes in ahead of Harmes, Sparrow and Jordon with the potential to quickly surpass Viney.

Anyone who thinks our midfield can’t get better is kidding themselves. If Clarry or Trac go down for a decent stretch we become pretty pedestrian, pretty quickly

Correct. The big Moment for that is 3 weeks away when trade week starts. We do have other things to deal with first.

Sure I don’t disagree that he is better than those 3 more that he would still be relegated to being a roll player and would he be satisfied with that (my assumption would be no). Trac and Oliver both have a license to take the game on and leave there man while the rest of the team backs them up and does the dirty work, you can’t have to many doing that or the whole thing falls apart.

I know Cerra is a good player (maybe don't appreciate how good) and you have to give up quality to get quality... but to give up Weid, our first pic this year (2nd round) and first round pick next year.  That's a fair bit to pick up isn't it.

My sense is that Cerra plays the thin wing (the one Brayshaw plays) with some runs in the middle.  Not as good as Brayshaw (Freo), Serong, Fyfe etc in terms of clearances and not quick but has good vision and disposal.  Is it essentially just upgrading our Brayshaw's role?  If so, I don't see that necessarily as a weakness.

But others would have seen a lot more of him than me.  We're obviously right in the window (Gawn, May, Brown, TMac may only have a few years left) and given the covid situation, maybe later picks can still be hidden gems.

I think he probably becomes an upgrade on Langdon rather than Gus and can roll through the middle. He’d be well inside our top 10 players.
