Agree with a lot of the above but comparing Clarry  to Robbie Flower is like comparing him to Lyon or Schwarz – you just can’t. The real comparison is to RDB, And I believe he’s not quite there – yet. Another season like this, and he will be, or more.

 

Petition to rename Clarry to Charlie

Ollie Wines has taken out both the Age and Herald Sun player of the year award.  Wines polled 145 votes in The Age, Oliver was equal second on 116, tied with Sam Walsh.

Two trash publications where votes are often handed out by hack journalists who look at the stat sheets. Absolute BS. Wines and Walsh have had great seasons, but Clarry is better than them both. Statistically and otherwise.

Maybe so, but Wines has had an outstanding season. I think Wines is Oliver's biggest threat for the Brownlow.

As I said. He has been sensational and so has Walsh. However Oliver leads them both in score involvements, contested possessions (by a mile and he’s broken the record for most ever in a season) and clearances. Oliver also averages more tackles per game. So considering the votes went to another inside mid, it is quite baffling given Oliver is statistically a better inside mid. 

Of all the awards available I rate the Coaches Award as the most credible. Any bias , conscious our subconscious, is mostly evened out and the coaches are the best judges of who is impacting the game.

FWIW I think it's going to be close between Clarrie and Touk Miller.

In the history of the game lots of players have had statistically better years than others and not won major awards.  The game is in the eye of the beholder.  Umpires do the Brownlow, media do their awards, the AA selectors bring their own bias, as do the coaches (still can't believe Naitanui polled against us a couple of weeks back).  You mentioned the Age and HS journalists  where votes are often handed out by hack journalists who look at the stat sheets, yet you reference Oliver's stats.  The reality is, Oliver, Wines, Walsh, Miller, Steele and Bontempelli have all been great this year and a case can be made for all of them.  I'd love Clarry to clean up but I won't care one little bit if he's wearing a premiership medal at the end of it all.  Anyway, we agree that Oliver is a star and has had a brilliant year.

Wines had more disposals overall this year, which is why I mentioned the stat sheet.

I think Oliver and Bont have been match winners multiple times this year. The others haven't. Miller and Walsh and to a lesser extend Steele all play for average teams which doesn't help. If you ask me Miller has had a better year than all of the above except Oliver. To do what he does in a team that gets smashed nearly every week is very very impressive.

Clarry’s second half of the year has been the best in the comp by a fair distance. However his first half wasn’t as good as Trac, Salem and Gawn will take a lot of votes early. 

I expect the Bont to leading by 6-8 at half way but I reckon Clarry can chase him down

Touk Miller was too far behind at round 21 to catch Oliver.

Bontempelli was probably ahead after round 20 but not polled well in the last few games.  Hopefully he hadn't stockpiled votes in the early part of the year.

Wines will go very close.  Great year and no other consistent enough player (except Boak at times) to take votes from him.

I reckon it will come down to the wire between Oliver and Wines with Bontempelli maybe sneaking up on them if being a media favourite influenced the umpires subconsciously.

 

As an side, Gerard Healy has Oliver for the Brownlow and for the Norm Smith in a winning demons side!!  Throw in the Rising Star to Jackson and we have the Trifecta!!

Yes. Clayton is my Brownlow winner. They may rob him because the Umps don’t love Melbourne enough.

Rick Lever would have to be the equal best intercept defender in the league, along with that chunky bloke from West Coast.

Stephen May is a beast defender.

Max Gawn is easily the best ruckman!

Jake Bowey should be best first year player.

Trent Rivers best young defender in the League.

Kosi Pickett, most unpredictable young player!

Dogga Jackson, most country and complete all round ‘Aah Yeh’, Aussie bloke award in the league!

Ed Langdon, most sophisticated and cultured player in the League.

Angus Brayshaw, biggest fan of the Max Gawn Fan Club!

Christian Petracca would have to get the award for being so big he would eat his whole family out of house and home! He might win the Brownlow too for being able to run through walls.

Finally, Charlie Spargo gets an award for being as annoying as Stephen Milne for kicking sneaky, opportune goals but fortunately being a nice person, unlike Stephen Milne!

No bias with these assertions!

The Brownlow, Norm Smith, Premiership and Rising Star would make it a glorious Quadrella.

One thing about Oliver also is hes a humble sort of bloke. Nice guy. Theyre all nice guys. Sure he has an ego, who doesnt. But he not an in your face type or has tickets on himself. He just goes about it.

I think hell win Charlie and we can change his name. Get those shoulders right.

I think if you average more intercept marks than any defender in recorded history that makes you the best by definition.

A complete superstar player who we are very lucky to have playing for the red and the blue. He's the most consistent player I've ever seen and as mentioned by a lot of his teammates, his will to win is remarkable. Sure he may not always have the prettiest ball use but, he is the nucleus of our side and without him we wouldn't be where we are now. Will go down as one of Melbourne's best ever players, if not the best.
