Hypotheticals

Featured Replies

I was having this discussion with another Demon fan today and would like to pose these two questions to Demonlanders.

1.  Would you rather watch Melbourne a) lose the Grand Final in person at the MCG or b) win it on TV?

2.  What is worse - a) losing a Preliminary Final or b) losing a Grand Final?

My answers were b) in both cases, whereas his were the opposite for both.

This could be a poll if I had any idea how to do that.

Lose a grand final

it would hurt but at least I know what it feels like to be there and the lead up, training and parade

1. b) a premiership is a premiership no matter how or where.

2. a) experienced both over the years and losing a PF means we don't get a chance. At least losing a GF we had a chance (notwithstanding that in 88 and 2000 the winners were dominant and we we somewhat lucky to make it.

Clearly 1 b. Who would rather watch us lose in person, seriously???

So far, my Demon mate and the first responder to this thread.  :D

I am with demonstone. b&b

I'd rather win it from afar, and I'd rather lose a Grand Final. I still remember when we beat North in the 2000 prelim final and it was amazing.

I was at the 1988 grand final, so I'd definitely rather watch a win on TV instead. Although the streaker in the third quarter was a highlight you won't get on the telly.

I’m with you DS, defs B and B.
I’d so much rather not making a GF than to make it and lose.

A) Win on tv . Attending the Essendon 2000 grand final was a humiliating feeling that stuck around for years.

B) Hard question, but as we can’t attend the GF, I think I’d rather lose a prelim, get the pain over and done with and reload next year.

Yep the 88 prelim was great too. Although getting smashed in the Grand Finals was horrible the build up to get there was fantastic.

The same can’t be said for Helen D’Amico. She got a lot of coverage (for having no coverage😁) I was at that match with my  (Carlton diehard) brother. I was furious she’d interrupted the game. Strangely enough, my brother wasn’t. 🤔

A win on tv

but I’m grumpy about having to miss watching live, it’s just not the same at home

Thinking of the ride and the emotion my cousin experienced when Richmond broke the drought

Thinking of that magic 4 weeks the Bulldogs supporters had including my wife's cousins who went up to Sydney for the Prelim as well as the GF in 2016

Thinking of the Cats supporters who got to experience a dominant win to break the drought in 2007

Even the old South die hards who were there for the Swans in 2005

Then thinking of us potentially being cheated out of that experience especially after all the heartache we've experienced over the years makes me feel ill

Even in normal years not everyone who wants to can get into the GF.

Preference order:

  1. Watch the Deez win in person
  2. Watch the Filth loose in person
  3. Watch the Filth loose again on the replay.

Clearly anyone choosing a) for question 1 didn’t sit thru either one of our last 2 GFs.

I was at both and just the thought of either of those matches usually ends up with me in fetal position sucking my thumb.

jaisus wcw, that was 39 years ago 😲

i'm assuming you must have been a toddler then 😉

What sort of [censored] psychopath would rather lose in person? lol

I’d listen to a win on the radio in the showers of San Quentin prison if that was the other option.

Batgirl was the only highlight of that game.
And she wasn't even that flash.
Also saw the 2000GF live.
That was sheet as well.

Gotta say the excitement of GF week for both was off the charts.
The games however a far different story.
Do not wanna see another loss.
Especially a bad one.
Live or on TV.
I'm still mentally scarred.

Would you be happy to wait until next year if you were given that luxury when the GF will return to the MCG, but at the expense of either losing the GF or not making the GF this year?

Genuine hypothetical.

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
