POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs GWS

The dogs game is the only game where it was a complete game.

For weeks now we haven't gotten off to a great start. They had a goal in the first 15 seconds. I've just never seen our midfield play that badly. The giants just played better. They ran more, tackled properly & kicked goals when it counted.

Selectors need to turn up on Thursday night sober. FMD.

We are yet to play a full 4 quarters which is concerning.

Yep.

25 goals in last 3 games against bottom sides. Average 8 goals a game. Yep forward line functioning beautifully.

GWS may be 10th but they are a good side and they played very very well. Their midfield is absolutely elite and destroyed us inside and on the outside. Absolute credit to them.

Defended superbly as well.

I know this is the greatest catastrophe in the history of Mankind but :

  • Too much see ball get ball in the middle.
  • Lever is one of our strengths, but his decision making is sometimes perplexing. A few times today (and many times previously) he continually ignores a shorter free option( in the corridor)  preferring to "bomb"it to a contest (or anybody) . He can dispose of the ball well but seems reluctant to use some finesse.
  • Jayden Hunt , I am sure, in the benefit of hindsight he may have not tried to do too much (and paid the penalty each time)
  • Kicking for goal. We work hard to get the ball there and then ....... This what nearly killed us last week too.
  • We have the best CHF in the league, but he is playing as the sole fwd. Give TMac (at CHF)some space because he uses the ball well and is very very mobile & big. He always provides a contest .
  • See above re the inability of the smaller Fwds to match their earlier season work. With only one big bloke providing a contest there is limited supply to them.
  • GWS are not a bottom side.

If I hear Goodwin say that not having our forward line mix set is "a good problem to have", I'll go ape. It's a terrible problem to have.

Someone said blind freddy could see our fwd line was broken.

I wish he was on the selection comittee.

Goody was oblivious to it.

Bbb must be scratching his head or laughing

So often nobody was home up fwd while max and dogga were standing next to each other.

Tired of the hollywood footy too.

Not a premiership performance or close.

Sadly two games after our last shocker.

Its not good.

Not too far from the business end and we wont find a replacement for weid.

Stubborn coaching imho.

Sensible summary jaded. They are certainly worthy finalists and were grand finalists only 20 months ago.

Upside is the reality check for match cttee. And weaknesses that need addressing.

We lost this one in the guts and [censored] kicking for goal.

But if umpire 6 is officiating the grannie, and we’re in it, then there’s no way he’s going to let us get over the line. He stiffed us in the Sydney game as well. Thanks to whoever shot his dog.

Dean Margetts.

Like Bill Deller, Matthew Nichols and Darren Goldspink before him. I knew we where F*&%*d before the first bounce when these guys were officiating.

Our football IQ is starting to be a problem. We have a high IQ back line and wings. Our midfield and forwards are as dumb as you can find on an AFL list. Max is smart too. Too many times this year dumb decision making and a lack of understanding of where the game is at has left us looking stupid. Why we wait to the last quarter to try and win certain games I don’t understand. We now look to have lost any confidence forward as well as being a bunch of morons. The weird decision making firward of centre feels like over coaching. Our players look hell bent on holding space and no intent to get the ball and score. We had the game under controL in the first quarter but almost went out of our way to to score. It looked weird at the ground. We could have take a three goal lead early and controlled the game from there if we had any intent.

I think this is an overreaction. We defended well despite GWS destorying us on the outside. Our problem is scoring. Pure and simple. We are a super defensive team. Tighten up a bit and we win today. Goodwin has gone from a super offensive coach in 2018 to a defensive one. This is Roos-esque football we are playing.

Giants played better and deserved the win. But we were well below our best and still could have won. Ultimately beaten at our own game. Not the end of the world.

We are nowhere as good as we hoped we were . ANB ,jordon .Hunt Spargo and Sparrow wouldnt feature in a genuinely good side .

We will make the finals but thats about it .Probably left it too late to work a forward combination around Brown but thats our best hope .Disappointing..

Oh well who wants to finish top 4 anyway.
Our midfield should be ashamed of that performance. Viney has to get dropped. He’s a liability. Pickett likewise.

Viney added very little other than slowing the game and its flow down whenever he earned a free. His kicking is equivalent to most disappointing - he seems unable to achieve the correct length for a receiver to run into or the control for the receiver not to have to backtrack from whence he came instead of watching the ball sail well over his head.

Spargo and Kozzie should have been 'managed' this game. GWS has a lifelong history of mobile and agile medium-height players leaving our two 'roving' types well out of the play, all game. We needed some courageous and taller scouts around the packs, perhaps those with a little muscle bulk and a capacity to step lively.

We needed BB into FFwd attracting confronted opposition backmen to release the Fritta, TMac and an improved smaller brigade selection for the snaps. Even Daw may well have contributed to this capacity and might have marked well and kicked truly.

Vanders was available and should have been utilised across HF to HB - he not only sorts opposition players, he creates plays in our favour.

Still we played with determination in the last half but it was not enough.

I think the fact that everyone here can see what is wrong is a good sign. We're (most of us) rank amateurs at best, in terms of football analysis. Surely if we can see our mids were lazy and our forward structure/personnel is putrid, then the coaches can see it and fix it too.

Right...?

So let me get this straight - Hunt is to blame for his dare and run that ended with him failing to find a target??

This one is on Goodwin and co. - as good as they have been - if Hunt is your engine - work within his limitations and give him someone to kick long to.

Fritsch is not a FF and yet we are trying to play this cute game on the counterattack that won’t cut it in finals and is now being found out by also rans.

I thought we could keep top 2 but now we must see if we can stay in the 4 or this start will be utterly wasted. Simply wasted.

8 point game next week.

We are number one and not only we cant bury teams we cant beat gws for tge taking.

It was there to be won but we have gone back to dees of old.

Including the coach.

Sorry guys...didnt mean to quote you all.

My bad.

So frustrated with that loss. Hope the team is next thursday.

Anyone putting blame on Hunt for trying a bit too hard to win us the game after everyone else did SFA all day needs to sit in a corner.

Trying too hard? The bloke has zero game awareness. No point in running 70m to get caught HTB. Kills the team and we get done of the counter

obviously he is not the only reason we lost but he is certainly one of the reasons

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
