May and Lever were outstanding down back all day and Salem was part of every forward move. I don't think we can fault Hibberd's effort on Stringer, Hunt on Topps, or Rivers' work either.

Lingers and Angus got the votes though because they kept our structures all day. Their ground coverage thwarted a lot of Essendons ball movement, and was a big part of our win.

Oliver was our best mid by a mile and it was probably the mediocre efforts around him that meant he didn't shine more.

No one up forward really deserves votes, but Jackson gets an apology because he worked hard and generated chances. Had he kicked 2, he might have snuck in.

Shout out to Spargo who didn't do enough. But every time he did get involved it was productive.

  • PREVIEW: Brisbnae

They really had me fooled when I picked them with great confidence to beat the Bombers at Gather Round last week. I should have recognised that nothing is more quintessentially Melbourne than defeating the undefeated early premiership favourite one week and losing to a winless cellar dweller on its way to establishing a record losing streak the next.
