Kev 10,901 Posted June 26, 2021 Posted June 26, 2021 (edited) We really are too nice a team. Our game against Collingwood shows it. We give a fairy tale to Bucks. Where was our mongrel? Why didn't the Weed run through some of them? He is playing for his spot and with minimal disposal and impact it would be the least he could do. Bucks showed us his new game plan, pushing us onto the boundary and moving the ball in the central area. Hope we had lots of “learning's”. Including, not allowing the opposition to mark. Until we become hard nuts, we will be seen as pretenders. Essendon has a tough team culture. Will we stand up to them? We need off the ball pressure and to be able to fight them for the advantageous position. Not only do we need anger to retaliate (within the rules), we need to get the ball or suffocate it when we don't have it. C'mon Gawny lead us and the MFC, to put the fear into the opposition. Angry, ruthless, hit them hard. Time to be the perpetrators and not the victim. Go Dees. Edited June 26, 2021 by kev martin 2

I know it doesn't mean much but I was mucking around with ladder predictor and the results were interesting. I have us going 4-1 in the next 5 matches then somehow missing the top 4. If I give us wins in all of the 'should win' games and then losses against our top four competitors (plus an away loss to WCE), we finish fifth. I wasn't picking our results as I thought they'd play out, but was trying to see what an average finish to the season would look like. It's certainly possible, if not probable, that we finish outside the top 4.

titan_uranus 25,250 Posted June 26, 2021 Posted June 26, 2021 I have a very similar feeling today as I did going into the Dogs game. Coming off a disappointing loss, up against a side who plays in a way that in theory should scare us with fast and attacking football. An opening quarter like the one we put up against the Dogs will do wonders for my nerves (although IIRC Essendon have fought back from a few deficits this year). We know how big this game is. Starting off the second half of the season with a confidence-boosting win, in a week where Geelong and Richmond have already lost, and two of Port, Sydney, West Coast and the Dogs are also going to lose, is huge. But more importantly, we all want to see us rebound. 2

So now ima send her a screenshot of the above convo and that should illustrate my point beautifully. Lucky I've got my VPN on. Don't want them to locate me.

I've seen this a lot, with talk of us being "pretenders" if we lose. IMO, a "pretender" is a side like Port or, in this season at least, Richmond - beefed up record with wins against bottom 10 sides but unable to beat good sides. We're undefeated against the top 8 (and even if GWS replaces Richmond that will remain the same). IMO, a loss tonight doesn't make us a "pretender" or put a question mark on our "September credentials", it will just put in jeopardy our chance to do any September damage because we'll be making our chance of a top 2/4 spot less likely. For so long as we keep playing good football against good sides, we're not a "pretender" and we're absolutely ready to contest in September, but we'll be shooting ourselves in the feet if we keep dropping games to bottom 10 sides. 2
640MD 3,562 Posted June 26, 2021 Posted June 26, 2021 I am confident we will win probably by only 4 goals or so. we have played well against the top sides and if you look at the last few weeks esdendun I’d s top side! I do not think we will take them lightly. we are not pretenders this year. Whether we can string 3 pressure games in a row in September is another matter. go Dees

I didn't say (neither do I believe) that we are "pretenders" titan. However, we are entering the pointy end of the season and to demonstrate that we are fair dinkum contenders we must put away sides outside the eight. Further, and as you alluded to, we need to win these types of games to shore up a top 2 finish. 4

Exactly. If they played the finals series tomorrow we would be undefeated against any teams left. I k ow it hurts losing to teams like pies and crows but as long as we don't have to play them in September (tongue firmly in cheek) we should be right 1
