I have canned Spargo a lot but have to say he is now worth his spot. Still wish he would actually get the ball a bit more. But some good games so far this year.

Just watching the replay and it's astonishing how many tackles went unrewarded for holding-the-ball. There must have been at least a dozen of incorrect disposals with nothing given. The worst of which were those where players just dropped the ball when tackled. Felt bad for lever when Hayward dropped the ball immediately when lever tackled him only for the umpire to penalise lever for falling into his back afterwards.

That Max Gawn tackle in the 3rd quarter was baffling that it wasn’t paid, the player was given plenty of opportunity and in no way disposed of it cleanly. For a big ruckman to make such an awesome tackle and it go unrewarded must be frustrating to Max. 

To be fair the umps missed some big calls on Sydney’s side as well.

Being a lovely day, a lot of dogs (financial members) were down the park chasing balls. A friend off mine has her dog signed up as a Hawks member. Go figure.

His tackling is a real feature of his game. Creates opportunities for teammates to pounce on loose balls. Love the way how he stands up to much taller/stronger players.

(re Spargo). I was in the 'too small, too slow, can't kick far enough, can't tackle, no tricks' camp. Happily the football department didn't share this view.

He certainly has developed into a good player. In particular his tackling has improved out of sight. He is also a smart player.

His chasing, tackling and shielding is fantastic. 

Hes not the most skilled out there but I reckon is one of the hardest working players we have for sure.

His goal was at a crucial time.

Watching the replay, you appreciare how much he does. 

He is one to point to for that classic line....possies dont mean everything.

Is it worth giving him some time in the middle?

I commented on that one in the gameday thread. It is a pet hate of mine - players just drop the ball and get rewarded for holding the man against or in the back in this instance. Hayward definitely locked Jake's arm in and pulled him forward on top of himself

Lever did exceptionally well to remain as calm as he did.

What I particularly like about Spargo is his ball use.  Whenever he has ball in hand I am very confident that he will hit up a team-mate inside 50.  Simply sublime, albeit under-rated, talent.  Love the kid!

I love the way Lever behaves in the face of frustration - you could tell that decision tested him to the max. A bounce on the spot and a vigorous grimace, watch the replay, then back on with it. Never argues with the umpire - recognises that it's a completely fruitless practice and a waste of energy. 

I hated that free kick, but was over it by the time an identical one was paid at the other end for Pickett a bit later. At least they were consistent.

My pet hate is the hold the man rule or total lack of. How many times does a player literally not have possession, they may have touched the ball with 1 hand for a split second, and yet they are tackled or dragged off the ball.

I am not at the last line status yet Vagg that is a ways off. 

Stuff happens in the blink of an eye in a game of footy. To be fair Bingers well seen. Will be booking our good selves in at specsavers in due course.

The main impact of Spargo is that his pressure enables team mates to get more of the ball. And when he does get it himself, he rarely wastes it.

The Swans dropped the ball pretty much every time they got tackled and couldn't get a disposal off. Its a tactic they use.

The frustration of the rule is that right there. If the ball spills out in the tackle its considered play on (so long as no prior).

Its ajudged so differently by 3 different umpires within a game its a total farce.

Massive kudos to Tom McDonald - match winner.

I actually feel for the umpires as they, like the players, are having to make split second decisions and therefore are not always going to get it right.  Unfortunately, they don't have the benefit of slow motion replays from countless angles, but have to make a decision based on where they are standing in relation to the action... people might say they should consider the decision before blowing the whistle, but then those same people would probably complain because the umpire took so long to signal the free; they're damned either way.  This is not meant as a serious suggestion, but maybe they should introduce an appeals system like in cricket, where a team has two or three appeals available to them... but, to make them think twice before they appeal, if the appeal fails, a 50m penalty is applied ?.

And I certainly do not buy into the conspiracy theories that have the umpires (or certain umpires) hating the Dees.
