Thought we'd have to dig him out've ground but of course ... Buddy so no free.

Or Olivers handball deemed a throw.

Reckon the umpiring is garbage as a rule these days.
Very rarely do I think a game was umpired well.

I was happy that the poor umpiring was not going to effect the result.

We seemed to be singled out for HTB and our players didn't appear to have heads when they didn't get frees for too high.

It seemed that the swans goals came by accident where ours came from marks inside 50. The swans were using our tactics against us. Easily the best team we have played this year. We definitely got GWS and Geelong at the right time. I am looking forward to our return games against those 2. They will tell us alot about the "New Demons"

That said, Sydney have been clean dropping the ball in tackles for over a decade now.

And the umps threw out most of the rule book last night. Paid next to nothing. 
 

Deliberate, holding the ball, protected area, stand, high contact and even marks not paid!

Some observations:

1/4 of their goals were scored at the start, without us even touching the pill.  That is two weeks running teams have strolled out of the middle for a training drill goal.  1/4 of their goals!

Second quarter we held them goal-less.  That is our brand.

We had a few lads that the oppo obviously put extra time into (Lever and Kosi) and several who were down on form (Fritta).  The good news is there were others who stepped up in moments that mattered (Jordon, Spargo...).

Our connection inside 50 was terrible.  We still are not used to BBB leading out, and would suggest we need to get him leading hard from deeper to be a demanding target.  His 3 came from one lead out, one contested grab at the top of the square, and one short pass inside 50.  Better support at the drop would have also helped.

Max is just not quite max Max at the moment.  Centre work and some around the ground stuff a little off his best.

TMac is flying.  What a solid contribution.

Petty will continue to improve, and was certainly not Tommo, but not bad either.

Centre clearances were terrible.  Stats would have been worse without Dogga.  I know there are threads devoted to this, but we seem to have no plan to halve/defend the contest, and no capability in our setup to positively exit ourselves.

8-0.  My god.  First time in my lifetime.  From seasons where winning 4 games was the best we could do, it is great to feel what it is like on the other side of the ledger.  Go Dees.

I couldn't understand why the umpires were giving the Swans players so much time to dispose of the ball before they called play on. Last week Melbourne players were called to play on almost as soon as the ball was in their hands. Another rule which isn't applied properly or consistently.

Sydney were the highest scoring side before this round. We kept them to their lowest score of the season so far. Another big win for our defence.

A lot of things to take away from that game, not least that we won while losing the centre clearances 4-17 and that will be discussed in detail elsewhere.  I want to focus on one thing here and that is the magnificent game by TMac.  I have never seen a more complete game by an MFC key forward under very difficult conditions. 

Four goals himself - all in different ways - first a classic get separation on the lead in a congested forward line, next a run down tackle and goal from a very difficult angle, then a weaving collection and run in heavy traffic for a great left foot snap and the delicious icing - sure Bolton probably won the car on Friday night but for me Tom's pack mark from four deep to seal the match was the greater mark - just awesome - his confidence was up and his leap at the ball was majestic. And not forgetting that he gave two great goals away - an unselfish great vision spot up of Ben Brown and the other to rival his pack mark - a magnificent running with the flight spoil, clean gather and lightning handball to Trac.

Massive kudos to Tom McDonald - match winner.

The umps have gone crazy about that.  What totally mystifies me, is what is the actual definition of the line that they have moved off. There seems to be no consistency (did I just say that about umpiring?).  Can anyone state how the rules define what the line is?    Is it a line between the mark and the centre of the team's goals, even if you are kicking deep in defense? Seems not. 

To compound this with the new 'stand' rule,  players rarely stand on the actual mark, so no one really knows where it really is.  I'm amused that before this new rule, players would stand on the mark and then shuffle sideways to cut off the corridor.  Now they just go there immediately and the umpire calls 'stand'.

Some terrible decisions. Swans player kicking back in from an out OTFull, runs outside the boundary for 10m and the ump calls play on?  If he's played on then it's a throw in. 

The number of times swans players literally let go of the ball when tackled. Play on. 

Number of times when swans players infringed the 10m rule was ridiculous

The niggling,  pouncing, scragging, faux tough guy acts were pathetic. 

 Very happy for that win. We owe them.

Watching it again Oliver was another that could’ve certainly closed the space down on Lloyd but I saw May give Melksham a mouthful only. A few players threw their arms up in the air due to that breakdown.

Pure football ecstasy to be 8 zip after a Saturday night ‘blockbuster’!!

It’s even better that today is Mother’s Day, and we have a family lunch planned.  Our whole Demon ‘tribe’ will join us, for an afternoon full of good food, fine wine and Demon banter.  Amazing how a Saturday W can transform a Sunday!  

........... and a (very rare) bouquet to the AFL for scheduling a Saturday night game for the Dees, instead of the usual 3:10pm start against an interstate club, with a crowd of 12,000, that we normally cop on Mother’s Day.

Hmmm not sure about that.  It looked like a flick pass to me even though he used a closed fist made marginal contact with the ball.   The momentum was generated from the hand holding the ball not the opposite hand - that's not a legal handpass in my book, or at least it wasn't when I played.  The hand holding the ball needs to be stationary.  I'm surprised at the number of overhead handballs that are allowed as well, this was never allowed 30 years ago.  Perhaps I'm showing my age! ?

Yes you are.
For the most part the umpires are just happy the ball's still moving.
The AFL wants fast flowing football and if they let a few throws go to allow that ... So be it or so it seems.
And he handballed with as you said a closed fist so .... Play on.

If you hit it wth your fist I don't think it matters if it looks like a flick pass, it is not.  However the appearance will increase the chance of it being mistakenly called a throw. 

But as for where the momentum comes from, you are right.  These days most of it comes from the hand/arm holding the ball, not from the punch even when it isn't overhead.  I think this creates a more free flowing game and that's why it isn't cracked down upon.  As long as we don't end up with one handed throws (a la gridiron).
