I am looking at that poster on my wall as i read this thread.

And you probably have this one on your wall, too. It’s sad to think that when WEG drew this, little did he know that it would be the last Dees one he’d draw. The last one that was printed, that is. He would’ve drawn Demons premiership posters in 1988 and 2000 but sadly they weren’t needed.

Don't have an image of '88, but here's the unused 2000 poster. More here.

I do, right next to the other one, no one thought it would be the last one for so many years.

Not sure if Dymocks is trolling Melbourne supporters with these recommendations based on my purchase?

Thoroughly enjoying ‘The Last Hurrah’ - really enjoying the history of the club and at a time where we had such a sustained period of success and MFCSS was unheard of.

Supermercado should consider doing an audio book so we can listen to his dulcet tones. Was great to have him back as a guest on the Demonland Podcast.

Will have to order his first book ‘The Great Deepression’ too!

Ordered mine today. I had been “over” reading MFC history, this season has renewed my enthusiasm. I started barracking for the Dees in 1964, so it is an important year for me

If the publisher decides an audiobook is worthwhile I want SEN legend Chris from Camberwell to voice it!

Super heard you on the podcast and raced out to contribute to the Bezos rocket to outer space. Looking forward to the read. Was unaware Norm Smith castigated Compton for his grand final winning goal. Unbelieveable Norm couldn’t over look this indiscretion. Great insight looking forward to discovering more.

Sounds like a great read. I have to admit I still have my fingers crossed the title become redundant this year

Did see the 88 one once. Can’t find it again. Was at Weg’s world a few years ago. His son-in-law told us if we won one ours will be the one we would have won if we’d won 4 in a row in 1958. Personally I thought the 88 one was the best I’ve ever seen.
I must have been like Weg in 1998. I thought that was the year we were going to win it. Even more than 2000.

Their "4-peat" was in an era where you could win a flag by your captain challenging and defeating the opposition captain in a mule wrestling contest.

Yeah collingwood were eliminated fair and square in the finals twice during their “4-peat”, but unfair rules allowed them a second chance by the right to challenge. If this existed nowadays, Hawthorn could possibly have equalled it in 2016

Anything that Supermercado writes is worth a read. After his debut book, I’m certain this will make it to the top book sellers list if not a Nobel Prize for Literature. All Demon fans should buy this - you can order your copy here - THE LAST HURRAH

The Last Hurrah is an excellent read, Supermerc.

Reliving the Crompton goal reminded me that some years ago I had some dealings over a period with Denis Dalton, who was a lawyer acting for a client that my employer was in dispute with. At the end of it all I had an opportunity to ask him whether he was the same Denis Dalton that was running around in the 64 Grand Final with #27 on his back. He said indeed it was, and he assumed I was a Collingwood supporter and went on a short reminisce of the day - I thought it polite to acquiesce in the disclosure of my allegiance.

He brought up the Crompton goal; said that he and Mick Bone, the other rover, had worked out a plan to “strand” Crompton up the field, with one of them going down the outer wing while the other went to the play up the ground by running up the northern wing (back in the day, players stood positions, and a resting rover would take over from the “working” rover by going through an imaginary interchange gate half way up the field, so this would be different to the usual way of “changing” rovers); probably a smart move in theory, but oh dear, terrible consequence in theory! They did at least have the effect of stranding Froggy - right in the spot to kick the winning goal.

Denis went on to mention that “we should have received a free in front of goal moments before the siren sounded”. Understandably the events of the day would be vivid to him for the rest of his life.

Nice man, later was a top level bowls player who represented Australia in Commonwealth Games, as I understand.

I finished the book just before lockdown, a great read, the descriptions of the last moments of the 64 GF were gripping. As always well done Supermercado.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
