Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Bringing Brown in is gonna cause some structural shift. Unless you drop LJ & Brown contributes in the ruck. Neither of which is on.

So Brown forward, Melksham Casey and TMac to take over Melksham's "connector" role which is essentially a large part of what he's been doing anyway.

We lose Melk's distribution skills but TMac gets the ball more, is a more obvious target & far better in the air. He kicks fairly low & flat into the forward line so that may be to our advantage. He'll throw in the odd howler but who doesn't.

This gives the least disruption to our structure.

I've no idea how to fit Weid in at this stage

Big Ben Brown is a huge in for Jones who is a bit unlucky and I don't think he will be back they got him to 300 and that's it congratulations on  a great career Chunk. Melksham out is a huge statement NO FAVORITES. It wouldn't surprise me if Weid gets a go as well to see how Weid and Brown gel at AFL level or Daw against his old club. I suspect it will be Sparrow 18 disposals in  a half is pretty good going. Chandler and Harmes haven't played enough football recently to be considered.

Brayshaw won't shift forward. He's a key defensive player for us. I'd go so far as to say he'd be keeping McDonald out of the wing position because of how well he plays the defensive winger role for us.

Wied just can't come in while McDonald is playing so well and Brown is untried at this level. Brown is ahead of him on runs on the board, so we have to try Brown first.

One of Wiedeman, Brown or McDonald will have to be at Casey each week, and McDonald is the one the other two will have to force out.

All makes sense but I get the feeling that Goody would like to try playing them all to see how it looks.  And if ever there was a game to try it, this would be it.

I don't think it would work as we would lose too much of the ground level pressure - but we are in a unique position of having a large number of big men with great aerobic capacity.  There is a parallel universe where this type of lineup means we are dominant in the air all over the ground and become unstoppable.

I don't think this will happen but if when you're 6-0 and playing the bottom side, it is worth trying some things to see if we can get even better.

Brown untried at this level???

Give seasons of AFL is hardly untried and played in finals!

on the age footy podcast today -  good listen with bartel’s take on the MFC - one of them said they would not swap Melbourne’s list for anyone’s. Best in the league by far.

Brown is untried with Melbourne clearly. He has runs on the board at AFL level, which puts him ahead of Wiedeman.

If C7 rumour is true and Jones and Melksham out then I would suggest its for Brown and a small likely Chandler or Bedford and now is the right time not wait until form wains or wedge it in when injury hits. Melksham has given little other than a few goals and involvements against the Hawks. Jones has been deservedly hanging on for 300 and whilst played his best of the season last week even that was at the low end of impact to others. We need to look to get Brown in and settled and counter balance this with more run and pressure (something Jones and Melksham add little to).

If the 'small' inclusion is either Chandler or Bedford, let's hope that the selection is for the one (of these two) who has, can and will display the most 'mongrel' against the opposition; in reality, of these two, the skill set and ability/potential to fit into the team and its renewed game strategies are possibly equal.

Especially considering he was actually not bad last week, I thought he played his role (but of course not sure about his defensive work)

Agreed. Jones played quite well. Should not be dropped.

As few changes as possible. The only inclusion I want is Bbb which means Melk has to come out.

Do you really reckon people look at the stats and don’t watch the game? I have never met one single person that does that.

My only argument though is that I think that no matter how good a player’s pressure is, there has to be some minimum number of touches of the ball somewhere, doesn’t there? Would we still be happy if it said 0?

I know it’s an unpopular opinion, it’s because I watched on TV, only stat watch, don’t know anything about footy etc, but I reckon the value of his game is being overplayed. It’s a moot point anyway because Melksham and possibly Jones are closer to the chopping block, and we don’t need to make any more than one change.

I reckon this post typifies our selection criteria at the moment. Do we want players that accumulate stats or players that make it harder for the opposition and by extension create opportunities? We've clearly got the balance pretty good at the moment, and it seems to be that players that have low stats in any given week seem to make up for it the next week (where somebody else then takes that focus).

I'd be happy with 0 disposals (although not checking the stats) if he applied significant tackles inside forward 50 and turned over the ball, creating the opportunities for others to kick a bag. Clearly if any player is doing neither, they will be dropped.

It will be interesting to see if Melksham and Jones take the team first mantra into the 2's if they do line up for Casey.

I don’t think the two things are mutually exclusive. A player can make things difficult for the opposition AND get the ball a bit themselves; ANB and Pickett are doing this.

Great decision. Firstly he’s the only player on the list to have won a game at that ground. Secondly he’s the only player on the list who I would want kicking for goal to save my life. Thirdly he’s too good to play for a VFL team.

My kingdom for a forward no more!

I really hope Jones not dropped.

I am comfortable if he is being managed, but it feels like if we drop him after his 300th that he was 'gifted it' somewhat which isn't a great look.

Just a simple comment that we might manage him through interstate games and it was all part of the plan should suffice as an answer if it comes to that. (but managed should be not playing @ Casey either)

Nash I think you'll be genuinely surprised now the coaching shift in this regard. I got a glimpse into this in the NAB league where coaches are putting a huge amount of emphasis into what you're doing when you don't have the footy. They're big now on pressure acts, tackles, perceived pressure etc. How many kicks and handballs you get is almost irrelevant because now it's all about keeping your job simple, and nailing the basics.

I know this has been a challange for kids in the NAB league because they're so use to just dominating in their age group, but they're getting taught about the basic fundamentals of what you do when you don't have the footy and how that can still impact the team in a huge way. Recruiters and AFL coaches are big on this and its now filtering down the under 18's so that it's ingrained in them when they step into AFL environment.

This is why the coaches wouldn't give a stuff how many kicks or handballs Spargo gets. The bigger emphasis on him would be how much pressure and tackling he's applying and locking the ball in the forward 50. Imo Spargo is elite alongside ANB and Pickett in this area and this would be praised highly by the coaches when they're reviewing their games.

Spargo's role might also not be there to kick goals as well. If he's doing the defensive stuff right, he'sthen that allows the likes of Fritta, McDonald, Pickett, Petracca to do their work offensively.

Hope that makes sense.

Weed would be privately miffed after kicking 10 goals in 2 weeks.

Presumable Melksham or Jones will be dropped for BBB unless there is a mystery injury or resting required.

He shouldn't be.  Tom McDonald is keeping Weideman out, not Brown.

It’ll either be Melksham dropped or Jones rested.

Jordon also an outside chance to go out .

Harmes not far away from returning either.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
