I thought his 2020 was a step backwards for him but the whole 2020 year was a nightmare for many players. 

His improved kicking and the consistent impact on games this year  has taken him to the level he looked like he was close too at the dockers.

When I heard Chocco on SEN he mentioned something like that goody was good at listening and taking on board what the assistants were saying. 

Thanks god for that however if he didn’t I have no doubt he would be soon gone. A positive change.

Seriously for the love of god.... or whomever is your deity.

So this is how it played out

1) Goodwin comes on board as coach

2) Goodwin is enthusiastic in 2018 - but rules with an iron fist, and no one elses opinion is valid

3) Goodwin has his own coaching staff and continues to be not open to other coaching staff's opinions

4) FD move on most of coaching staff from Goodwins initial tenure - and he fails to listen (2019)

5) Goodwin fails to be willing to listen in 2020 hub/covid etc

6) Williams and Yze are recruited - and Goodwin through gritted teeth (or fear of losing job) is only now willing to listen.

Coincidence is not causation...

Robbie Flower and Stan Alves played the wing like Langers

Brian Dixon  was My first great Melb winger completely different style.

Not fast in running speed just an average floating punt kick ( which he often got to his boot very smartly) about 40m but superb high mark and very competitive.

Usually got 20 plus possessions each week and played tall for a winger of around 5ft 10 ( or 170/3 cm).

Played in our Glory Days (1954 to 1964) and In a number of our flags  then. 
 

Langers is tracking to join our four Other greats Dicko, Alvsey Robbie ( our greatest winger but could play elsewhere) and Stinga. 
 

And he is looking as if he could be only the second of those to have a flag or flags on  his CV, in a season or two.

If Fritsch didn't kick straight on the weekend (and I'm really happy he seems to be straightening up), we could have been in a bit of strife again.

Poor field and goal kicking has cost us so much over the past two years.

I'm really glad Chocco is on to it.

I think Goodwin is very lucky to have both Chocco and Yze working with him.

Hats off to Yze as well. That continual rotation of players through the midfield would be giving midfielders small breaks to allow us to burst out of the packs with more speed and agression and keeping the opposition guessing. All of a sudden we have outside speed!

Fingers crossed we go 5-0 this weekend and head into Jones' 300th at the G against Richmond undefeated.

Much like last year when Burgess encouraged him to take a few extra steps when clear, I think the ability to deal with the tag is down to the coaching team and has the "Game Day Strategist" written all over it. Remember Clarry is only 23, when he is coached in a particular way to address an issue and he implements the instructions and it works then we will continue to unlock his full potential. There is an old adage  "Success breeds Success".

As I wrote the above I suddenly realised this is true of so many of the players, I dare to dream what a 19yo Kozzie could be with the right coaching.

Belief is building across the entire squad and the improved coaching has had an enormous influence on that from what I'm observing.

Not achievable.

Langdon's ability to get it so consistently on the outside also means opposition midfield's have to be very wary of outnumbering the inside of the contest (which we often let them do), otherwise they could leave themselves open to being burnt on the outside by the likes of Langdon or Hunt. Their combined speed is a very handy weapon to have and not many teams have two of them. This means though that our inside mids have more width to work with at stoppage, so I'll join the love in chorus for Ed. He's a star. He really is. I thought he was great last year too.

Let's be very clear here. None of us have any idea whether Goodwin has been stubborn at all. If you think back to some of his assistants (Jennings, McCartney etc), it's clear he let them have quite a lot of input to game style and ideas. It may well be a bit of a Demonland urban legend that Goodwin doesn't listen. The coaches who were jettisoned may well have been jettisoned against Goodwin's wishes. We won't likely ever know.

It’s a reference to a hashtag Gawny and Gus are trying to get trending every time there is a picture of Langdon (Lingers). They talk about him a lot in their podcast.

I believe so, unlike last year when he stopped his involvement when the season started, he has continued 3 days a week and has been working directly with Uze and the midfield. Among his media commitments I have been listening to him on AFL 360 and I love his team analysis. I have noted that he only talks in generalities when it's Melbourne related.

I've been wondering where to post my next observation so thanks for giving me the opening.

I thinks it's been largely overlooked/forgotten that Pert instigated a review of the coaching department to identify the needs going forward. It would be naive to think Goody and Richardson didn't have input into that and then Pert set the task to identify the best candidates that addressed those needs. Likewise Goody and Richardson would have to be not just comfortable with the choices but excited by the prospects otherwise it just wouldn't work.

The review, the implementation and the results to date say it's been a great success and Pert deserves some kudos. He will deserve the ultimate praise if we can go on to win the supreme prize.

I loved Lewis when he played for us, really think he was undervalued by supporters in his role during 2018. But if he was in charge of kicking and skills training last year than clearly he did not do enough of it. This is not so much with the fact that there wasn't much improvement, Langdon pointed to the fact that this season with Williams there has been a specific focus on it as opposed to last season. 

Perhaps that was a COVID related issue that something had to be dropped but this year Mark has not only made it a focus but also ensured that it's not the same tired old drills but something different to keep them interested and on their toes.

I don't mean to sound like I'm potting Lewis, I'm more pumping up that Williams has been a great get.
