Important win that one, especially because we managed to respond to St Kilda's strong first half of the 2nd quarter. It's the kind of performance that helps instil self belief throughout the playing group.

Not when he is getting in the way of Lever/May/Tomlinson.  You might think it silly, but we looked better the moment Gawn was told to go forward, as we were not so congested.

Gawn previously has been an issue in the backline imo.....You can't just flood back and have nobody to kick to when you go forward.

After watching replay of the game earlier today my comments stand.

The coaches would have realised he was actually creating more issues down back, than solving them when we were under the pump.  I expect to see this 208 cm giant forward or ruck, where he can exert a lot more influence on games.

Sorry to be so silly communicating something i thought was as clear as daylight actually watching the game.

I don't think any less of Max, just how he is utilised.  Hopefully the coaches see that too.

Pretty sure Gawn played the entire second half and spent most of it camped in the backline. McKernan got him once out the back for a goal. Apart from that he stayed down and let Lever drop a simple mark all by himself.

In the second quarter we went in to our shell and part of that was Max dropping too deep. I agree with that. We also needed to shake up the stoppages and Jackson did that.

Not to mention the embarrassment of the quarter time siren with an obvious block by May and big Maxy staging.

May can’t easily out mark Max King types. Lever had his hands full on Membrey. It’s the perfect situation to sit Max back.

It’s all about versatility for Max but there’s no way he’s not a crucial part of the defensive system.

Whilst it was a great team win and the usual suspects have been rightly praised on here for their collective contributions to the win, there isn’t IMO enough recognition for Charlie Spargo. His current form and quality of his disposals is really important for our team. Loving what you’re bringing Charlie, keep it up.

If that snap from the pocket had not have hit the post he would have been in contention for goal of the year. Seems to have gone up a gear this year after a few solid preseasons. Loving his game at the moment, multiple efforts and a smart user of the footy.

Wasn’t it Mark Lewin who had the sleeper hold? The Killer’s big submission hold was the abdominal stretch!

Memory probably doesn't serve me that well HT, however this you tube tribute video to Killer Kowalski appears to show KK applying a sleeper hold to an opponent. Of course he was renown for his abdominal claw hold which has an 'infamous' Melbourne Demons connection. In 1967, the Australian television presenter Don Lane (expat yank and Demons supporter) irritated Kowalski during an apparently friendly interview and was attacked with the Kowalski claw hold.

Brayshaw is fine, he is doing his job patrolling the wing .  He pushes from contest to contest and set up a few goals last night.  Not every player has to get 30 p’s and kick 2 goals every week.  The fact that he seems happy on the wing and all the media I hear him in suggest he is loving it.  Just listen to him after last nights game.

I think this is actually really important. Previously, he would have been upset he wasn't starting in the guts. But he sees a clear role for him on the wing and is happy to just play his part.

Same as Trac. He plays a lot more midfield but also seems happy playing wherever we need him. A bit of maturity/team first attitude creeping in, maybe.

You’re kidding yourself. I agree Max was staging there but that was also one of the worst free kicks I’ve ever seen paid. “Obvious block” lol.

I’m loving how aggressive Petracca is this year. He looks hungry and wants to intimidate himself.

Sure, we sprayed it a bit but we had 39 shots on goal tonight. I'd far prefer we get it inside 50 for a dodgy shot on goal than have the opposition's loose man rack up 10 uncontested marks against us.

Turn those shots into goals and we can start erecting an Yze statue at the G...

It's an interesting one - if I'm recalling correct the actual total of inside 50s was about the same for both teams.

Our attacks were 'breaking down', so to speak, at the very last kick, the actual shot.  St Kilda's attacks were breaking down one step before that.

With Giants, Cats, Tigers being three of our next four games, I don't expect we'll be beating up any teams just yet (unless Hawthorn stumble) but if we have earned a bit of a steel edge over that period we might just do some absolutely horrible mauling later in the season if our radar comes in against an opponent we dominate in general play.

But those fish are yet to be caught.  I'm trying so hard to be 'one week at a time' I'm even avoiding thinking about how much I hate the Cats.  Not easy.

Hasn't hurt us yet but the only negative at the moment is our conversion in front of goal. Hopefully it clicks next week

Can someone tell Petracca to hold the ball still when he's lining up for a set shots instead of twirling it in his hands? I thought he had to do an extra spin in the last quarter when he was lining up which messed up his timing because when he spun it the first few times he ended up with the laces facing in. None of the best shots at goal would ever spin the ball in their hands during their run ups.

There was nothing more cringe-worthy than BT calling G. Ablett the little master. There's only one little master on this planet, and he played cricket. While I'm a big fan of Spargo, the copycat tag/legend status is a tad premature.

I agree about the unusually large footy brain.

geez not sure theres much more gaz coulda done in the game. absolutely deserved the little master tag he's the best i've seen in my lifetime and best player of this century undisputed

Agreed but it will hurt us against quality opposition.

Damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t! What does Goodwin (the guy that did actually get us to a prelim before a couple of failed seasons) have to do before he gets any credit?

Reasonable suggestion I made.  Very unmelbourne start.  We actually have someone on the bench who has been there done that.  No coincidence I say..

And what does goodwin have to do before he gets any credit?  Ok then, comfortably make finals.  At the very least.

I have seen not a frame of the game ( in QLD, game not on tv up here. ) but that score line suggests to me we should have won by 10 goals. Poor kicking for goal again? Oh it is 28 here with a slight on shore breeze and not  a cloud in the sky.

Who can we get to teach Jacko to kick? Gary Lyon, Tom Macdonald??

Wayne Carey, Piggy or plugger are the only three i would touch.  Keeping in mind Choco ran a kicking skills school for quite a while i believe so he might be an option if thats part of his role.  Unlikely though.
