Do people think that our players get inspired to perform better by looking up at empty stands? Or do you think they rest on their laurels and think "we don't need to do anything more, people are already watching us" if the stands were full?

I am quite sure that, if it has any impact, it doesn't help our players. There is a reason the concept of a "home ground advantage" exists, and it doesn't come from empty stands.

Patron caps impact us greatly because we have such a large core group of supporters in MCC which has its own caps. Whereas clubs like Richmond and Collingwood are less impacted as AFL Members has a larger spread.

We along with Essendon and perhaps Hawthorn desperately need an increase in capacity to ensure there is greater allowance for MCC. I say this as an AFL Member who probable wont have issues getting tickets. 

I agree with this.

The MCC felt relatively well attended and AFAIK close to 100% of the seats available were taken on Monday/Tuesday.

If my maths is right and the MCC was allowed 50% capacity, that would be around 11,000 total. I'd be confident that around 8,000 were there. That means 13,000 in the rest of the ground, which had room for around 40,000.

If the MCC could have taken more, I'm confident it would have.

Watch Gerard Whateley get on his high horse this week about the lack of crowd and that we should’ve allowed Essendon/Hawthorn to play the game at the G while we play at Marvel. He was sooking about it pre game.

Well he'll feel empowered to get on that high horse because our supporters don't help our club.

The same supporters who don't go to games likely blame the club for not responding to these sorts of things in the media.

Many I am sure couldn’t make it for a legitimate reason. If you are not one of them then shame on you.

In fairness the crowd bears some responsibility for creating the atmosphere. I was at the game and would have liked for at least 35k Melbourne supporters to be there, but can also appreciate the reluctance for people to go to the footy given our experience with Covid-19 over the past 12 months. Personally, I respect people not wanting to go to the footy during a pandemic, whether for health reasons or belief that we shouldn't be assembling in crowds, but get a little annoyed when people don't want to attend round 1 because they don't think we will play well.

Ok, so I just wrote something in Postgame about the reasons some people may not have turned up, so wrong thread.

Anyway, where I was sitting there was plenty of atmosphere. We loudly booed the umpiring decisions just like the good old days. You know, pre Covid. Some people around me were jumping out of their skin, they were so excited being back at the footy. When Kozzie went for his flyer the screams were deafening. I thought the crowd was loud and proud.

Maybe it depends where you sit?

I wasn’t there nor do I attend regularly, but think Richmond and Collingwood have 2.5 - 3 times our supporter base so it’s to be expected that they can get a crowd in with limited numbers.

If we have 40k members and had 20k turn up, that’s probably about right.

I’d also love to see some stats on the age of Melbourne supporters, think there would be a lot in the bracket that are very susceptible to this virus and would be hesitant to attend mass gatherings.

Finally, I’d rather watch from home with the ability to do other things than be stuck at the ‘G watching games like that. It was a very ordinary affair

 

 

It was a disgraceful crowd. The club is to blame though. Did absolutely nothing to promote the game. It should have been a call to arms, particularly after Essendon insulted us. The club is asleep at the wheel. There was nothing put out to hype the game . 

Tigers with 100k members vs. Carlton probably at 60k and they got a 49k crowd. One reigning premier the other talked up to make finals.

Collingwood and Dogs combined membership well over 120k and they got 46k crowd. Both made finals last year.

I get that those other crowds may have been close to sell out given capacity restrictions, but Demons who have been slagged off since the Bulldogs game in the media vs. interstate team and people are surprised by 21k?

Do you think the stuff to get tickets had some kind of effect on the crowd. And Ticketek trying to charge extra fees. 

There’s reasons 9,000 odd folk stayed away

1. Covid, older crew won’t risk public exposure. Most of them likely have friends in aged care and we know what a [censored] that’s been

2. Booking tickets. People have got used to no impediments in their way. The extra call no doubt made people think twice.

3. Game against the Dogs made people not bother for fear of watching us lose

4. A no win game. If we lose it’s a disaster if we win, well so we should have.

5. Weather, lots of people chose other activities on this gorgeous day.

Its no disaster or a surprise that it was a poor crowd, I’d guess crowds will be down for quite awhile.

Getting a ticket, and ticket prices for general public were absolutely farcical. Should have been promoting the game with $15 tickets or something

Can’t speak for everyone but I know several people that passed as they couldn’t sit in there usual spot with there usual people plus the extra barrier of needing to book online

First game in 18 months, sunny Saturday arvo at the G. No excuses for people staying away 21k is an embarrassment.

The difference is the 100’s of thousands more people that cheer for the other teams 

I have no problem with people wanting to avoid mass gatherings. I imagine our supporter groups are older than others.

Yeah I sat in the second level of the Olympic stand and it sounded like a 30k crowd to me.

But cannot understand how we only managed 21k.

I had issues with ticketing and and ended up paying $50 when I should have been able to get in for free as a GA member. I paid it anyway because I thought, jeez tickets must be selling fast better just pay it coz I didn’t want to miss out. Gotta say I felt pretty stupid sitting there with half a million empty chairs around me ?‍♂️

Thank goodness we won otherwise I would have been really dark about it ?

When I started getting 2 emails a day I knew that tickets were going slowly.

Ordering mine online was easy, had to go to a ticketek window at the ground as I didn’t receive the sms with my electronic ticket (which subsequently came through at approximately 6pm). Still, got it sorted and saw not the best of games with a pi$$weak crowd.

A lot of our members really are fair weather supporters. How many on here could’ve gone to the game but chose not to? And how many of them have a go at the club. It seems like those who are the first to criticise are also the first to jump off.

No doubt there are quite a few player’s that need to grow some more backbone, I suggest there are many ‘supporters’ that need to as well.

50 bucks!!  I would have staged a protest! Yes, that  Ticketek site makes you panic and agree to anything. You would think we were trying to get Grand Final tickets, not to a game against Freo. We are members. Membership should be good enough. The machines scan our bar codes at the gate, so they know who has attended, for Covid tracking. (Unless it's for a big game eg. Collingwood etc.)

Annoying thing was i initially jumped on on the iPad to get my ticket, but when it came up with the $50 amount I was like, that can’t be right. So jumped onto the laptop and same thing, so assumed I had no choice. Frog it, was just great to be back at the G!

My post was not about the politics of Covid but that we could not afford to attend as we are now on the dole directly because of Covid. I have had a very long history of membership with the club and am disappointed not to be a member this year and your heavy-handed censorship only adds to my disappointment.
