Bobby Hill? I’ve either missed the joke or the game against GWS?

Lack of space might not suit him...

I hope you're right and I'm wrong though.

(Hunt)

He has the pace to go with the St Kilda little/fast guys.

But doubts about his tank, and his very poor tackling technique are a worry.

I would much rather play Hunt on a wing than back, not sure why the coaching staff is so adamant on playing him down there.

He has toe, he can kick a goal and now that he's played time down back he can hopefully be clued on to defensive positioning and running down/pressuring the ball carrier.

I do worry about his kicking at times, but Langdon also isn't the best kick either.

Also why did we not pick up Butler? lol

I have a bad feeling he's going to eat us alive

Hopefully not like last year when he destroyed us with 11 possessions and 0 goals in a Melbourne win

Cause Melbourne.

Harmes out for 6 weeks with a broken wrist.

Looks like Viney for Harmes in reading this article. I like the noises around senior players having to earn their spot...

Out: 10 of Oliver's unnecessary handballs.

In: 10 of Oliver's quality kicks.

Out: Harmes trying to break tackles and getting caught.

In: Viney trying to break tackles and getting caught.

Because he was a fringe player at Richmond, and like 17 other clubs we didn't have that amazing crystal ball you seem to have at your disposal.

Trying my best to read between the lines in Goody’s presser I see Viney and Chandler in. Harmes out and my best guess is Chunk out with him.

Chandler for Jones would be great

I’m surprised by the lack of love for Jones. There was a period in the last quarter, where it looked as though Freo were going to challenge us and we threw Jones into the middle. He won the ball and rather than stuffing around with it , like Oliver, he drove it deep inside 50 to advantage. A couple minutes later he was instrumental in another goal ...  he still has a bit to offer

Chandler should not play. He has no form to go in with. He should be playing in the VFL. Viney for Harmes is the only change. Picking the sub will be hard maybe Bowey or Baker.

We should only pick veterans as the sub , cant afford to have kids wasting away and not playing at all.  They missed all of last season already.

I don’t disagree with you. ‘Jones out’ prediction was largely based on them looking to up pressure on the ball carrier this week (Jones didn’t lay a tackle last week). Plus I am guessing they’ll use Jones more sparingly this yr than they have in prior years.

Although he held his own at the weekend, so not suggesting he gets dropped,  I reckon the injury sub could not have been introduced at a better time for Jones. He'll easily get to 300 games now.

Yes and no Jacko.

The reason why Jones is playing is because no one at VFL is exactly banging down the door to replace him. You don't want players playing just for the sake that they're younger and need games. I'd rather our players earning their spot instead of being gifted just for the sake of it.

I would like to think the likes of Laurie, Bedford, Bowey can really play some significant football down at Casey to the point where they overtake Jones in the senior side.

Interesting that St Kilda have not only more tall forwards but also more genuinely speedy small forwards/half-forwards.  It is going to be a fair bit harder to cover them all and I'm kind of glad May, Lever and Tomlinson got last week to build a bit of confidence.

Specific players that concern me are Membrey and Billings.  Particularly Billings.

I don't think Hunt has the right kind of 'zip' to be in defence against the likes of Hill, Butler and Lonie. (I'm making a precision technical distinction here between 'zip' and 'dash'.)  Could he by tried out as some kind of wing tagger on Billings?  I'm not going to suggest using up Langdon on such a negative role and I don't think we've got anyone else who could do it.  Hunt would not be able to match Billings but could at least limit him to something less than 20 uncontested possessions, and just once in a while Billings won't cover Hunt defensively and we'll all get to see Jayden doing his favourite long gallop and massive kick.

Viney in for Harmes is the clear change, but we must, simply must, bring in some kind of cover for the fast, small options St Kilda will be able to use to avoid the long kicks to Lever and May.  I don't know who that can be or whether we should consider moving a current half-forward/mid to a tagger role (Nibbler on Gresham?) just to provide some interruptions and slow things down a little.

Vanders would be my choice.

Further to your comment Werridee, I notice Vanders has been singled out as one of our best players in the last 2 VFL practice games - so I would imagine he is busting down the door to be selected.

Hasn't Goodwin already said (or am I imagining this) that a player's first game for the club won't be as the injury sub? If he hasn't said it, I hope the club thinks this way.

Agree with Viney add Vanders to that list.

Yeah I didn't think it out too clearly. I wouldn't have Bowey as sub either.

I think the emergencies will be Chandler, Bowey, Vanders and Baker. Vanders is my choice as the sub.

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
