Gun Dee in uphill battle, Goody's heartbreaking chat to ACL victim

Goody speaks about Gus and Viney availability and also Kozzy as well. Brayshaw to start playing VFL and Viney touch and go for round 1. Looks like Kozzy will come straight back into the side in round 1. Shows how highly rated he is by the coaches.

Surprised about Kossie, I wonder if it will be alongside Chandler? If Chandler has another good outing against the Dogs it will be hard (dumb?) to exclude him from the round 1 side.

Seems like they might be learning with Viney that playing it safe beats the alternative.

It leans towards yes for Koz but ‘available’ doesn’t mean he’s a certain starter.

I wish he was asked about Melksham and Hibberd too. Hibberd could be crucial to curtailing Fyfe and Walters if he’s fit and ready to go.

Hibberds barely done a pre season. Won't be ready for round 1.

Fingers crossed that Kade Chandler has another strong game this Monday.  The trio of Kozzie/Spargo/Chandler is something that can cause Freo serious problems, and I cant recall a time when we have gone with 3 small forwards.  Exciting!

I’d imagined that was the case, especially if we aren’t hearing about him. But I also thought Gus hadn’t done much until very recently.

A good move to wait til Jack is 100% - in the past our midfield has functioned very well (and at times better) without him

And sometimes worse!!!

Just hope Kossie can keep his feet so he can hopefully impact the contest

I have never seen a player who slips over so much so it is difficult to determine his worth. I wonder what the problem is? Fortunately he is 19 and has plenty of time  but he must fix it

I would have Spargo and Chandler in the side before Kozzie.

Is it time enough now to reflect on why we resigned Jack and didn't do the hard thing and move him on at peak value.  We now have a broken player in a position where we have enough depth to cover him taking salary cap we may want to use on one of Salem, Oliver or Trac.

Just not sure that we did the right thing signing Jack long term...even if it felt like the emotionally right thing by the club.

Sounds like he was very interested or tempted by the Geelong offer until it came to $$$.   They valued him around the 450k mark, we value him at 650+.   Can see why he is still playing for Melbourne.  Fwiw i think we should have traded him and got something different into our midfield but many seem to rate Viney so highly that we had to keep him whatever the cost.  For his age/experience he is a very one dimensional bash and crash type that does not seem to think through many situations on the field.  The real issue though i think is that he does not have flexibility to play other positions, much like Harmes/Brayshaw.  Not sure all 3 of these guys are needed....Definitely not all in the same team.   All these three players are expected to play Seniors and are paid well above average wages, i just don't think we function that well when we have 2 or more of them in same team.   Overpriced depth if god forbid something happens to either Oliver or Petracca.  I hope each of Viney/Harmes and Brayshaw can all add layers to their games, none are automatic selections going off last few seasons.

Very concerned about the influence Walters will have on round 1. He was literally the difference in a 3 goal result in Cairns last year and he's touted to be playing predominantly forward this year. Do we have anyone to go with him?

He also kicked 3 or 4 against us 2019.

Couldn't agree more - you could see this even in the scratch match against Richmond, we don't defend fast small forwards very well. tbh i'm not sure? Jetta - Rivers?

That's because Goody refuses to select a small back pocket type back men and most mids are not quick enough to go with these smart crumbing players.

He abandoned Lockhart Halfway  through last year and stopped his development now ha has a choice of him agsin maybe  Bowey which is a tall order but I don't know whether Riv has the small backs smarts in pace etc to do the job On these climbers. Might be ok for Walters As he is bigger.

R1 last year we went with:

Pickett, ANB, Spargo, Bedford

Plus Fritsch, Truck, Lockhart, etc.

Not sure about Pickett. Goodwin doesn't say he's going to play Round 1, only that he hopes he'll be "available", and at any rate I don't think he's certain about that.

I'm surprised at Brayshaw's progress but not by Viney's, as I've come to expect slowness when dealing with Viney and his feet (pun intended).

We won't see Viney in Round 1, I doubt we'll see Pickett, and Brayshaw is maybe 50/50%.

What can be said about all this, though, is that this has not been an ideal pre-season. We'll have to see how it impacts our performance, if at all.

If pickett is fit he plays, don't think I've seen many first year small fwds play the type of footy he did last yr.  Is a freakish talent and should be in our B22.

But he has been away from the group for a bit, if that means he needs a week or 2 in the VFL to get his touch or fitness well so be it.  But is our best small fwd by a long way and only in his 2nd year.

As for the others, let's make sure they are right before throwing them in, especially midfielders as we have a plethora of them, so rotate and give those that are injured the correct rehab.

I'd be thinking Jetta, and then it's all about respect..

Good news! Gus and Kozzi right for round 1 and Vines for round 2

Maybe Harmes plays on the ball for round 1 and tags Fyfe.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
