Summary?

Gawn contract talks have begun. No talks yet with Oliver. Name checked Carlton (no other) as a potential suitor. No mention of Petracca's contract.

"Melbourne has kicked off contract discussions with free agent Max Gawn but is yet to make any progress on a bumper deal for star midfielder Clayton Oliver.

For the sake of everyone at Melbourne, including coach Simon Goodwin, a quick start to the year will smooth tensions and ensure the job of locking away stars like Oliver is much easier.

Clubs like Carlton still have significant salary cap space and the desire to bring in strong midfielders in the mould of Zach Merrett or Oliver to help Patrick Cripps and Sam Walsh."

If we are crap again he and goody are gone imo. (Brayshaw most likely too).

Goody will be a lot earlier than Oliver though.

I have it on good authority that Clarry will be a demon in 2022...

It’s funny that everyone spruiks Carlton needing support for Cripps and Walsh, yet they have bought in Zac Williams as a mid also.

That trio would be arguably top our best 3.

Nah. Cripps is very good but battered and beaten-up, Walsh's disposal is very suspect and Williams barely played midfield. Clarry, Trac and Viney have their measure i reckon.

Oliver’s contract feels like it’s going to be the most overcooked, most annoying storyline of the year.

We need to get this done before round 1, Trac, and Gwan aswell will have a big impact on memberships and team moral

Missed you around here Ethan

Sign up Max and l believe that Oliver will stay and sign well possibly between rounds 5 and 11 just a hunch that is my gut feel.

As for the Trac he is signed till the end of 2022,.

Max is a Melbourne boy no doubt and l think that Clayton is along the same lines l am confident of that  I wouldn't say it if l wasn't confident. However  it will be a big sigh of relief when Clayton signs on the dotted line.

Just need a good start to the season .

I hear what you are saying, but if all 3 played at their best I think Carlton win that hypothetical. Cripps and Wiliams could do a lot more damage than Oliver and Viney. Walsh and Oliver probably even split (on output), Cripps and Trac similar, then Williams vs Viney is probably weighted in Carlton's favour.

I'm sorry but since when is Williams of a sudden a better midfielder then Oliver?

Absolutely laughable and actually an insult to Oliver that you've pinned Walsh on even terms with Oliver,  but rate Williams above him in midfield ability.

Just remember he's made the initial All Australian squad 3x as a midfielder, and won a club best and fairest. And he's only 23.

williams has played one game of midfield his entire afl career thus far

i'd take oliver over cripps, petracca over walsh, and viney over williams any day of the week

Cripps and Oliver comparable AA selection wise but as i said Cripps has taken a lot of punishment over his career. I wouldn;t be surprised if he's bandaged up like a war casuality at pre season Carlton training. Trac hands down over Walsh (but Walsh is young so may improve). Viney/Brayshaw over Williams for mine.

I never discussed Williams vs Oliver.

I like Clarry a hell of a lot, but don't necessarily think his 30 touches is more damaging than Walsh with 30.

Would I take Viney with 20 touches or Williams, well that is a no-brainer. Williams every day of the week.

I know Clarry is bloody good, but if people are happy to say Cripps was no good last year, they need to remember that Clayton wasn't either. We also know Cripps was carrying a very heavy burden with his partner and her issues

Geez the journos start earlier with this crap every year.

I have zero concern.  We are no longer a club that loses quality players.  And if we did lose Clarry it would be due to professional incompetence on and off the field and we would deserve the result.  Every club would want him but if he left it would be for success, which would leave the Blues well and truely out of the running

I refuse to be drawn into this discussion (until maybe June when I start to panic)

If Gawn is about to sign a new deal, I hope it is for significantly less than the $900K he was reportably paid in 2020. Great player, and he deserves to be well paid, but gun ruckmen don't win premierships, and he turns 30 this year.

I would hate to lose Oliver or Petracca because we we are paying Gawn overs and therefore can't pay market rates to the players who will have a bigger say in whether we win a premiership or not.

I think this will in a way validate your theory. If there is genuine belief in our ability to win a premiership and the entire playing group has committed, then players will have bought in and contract discussions will be concluded pretty quickly. If on the other hand there is decent among the players (which were rumored after season end) then contract discussions will linger and the outcome will be dictated by how much we can pay Trac, Gawn and Clarry without digging ourselves a hole ala Collingwood FC 2020.

I find Clarry quite reserved and hard to read. He does seem to have strong relationships with Salem, Trac and Gawn, which will definitely feature in the process he will go through when resigning.

I agree.

They really had me fooled when I picked them with great confidence to beat the Bombers at Gather Round last week. I should have recognised that nothing is more quintessentially Melbourne than defeating the undefeated early premiership favourite one week and losing to a winless cellar dweller on its way to establishing a record losing streak the next.
