Has it been confirmed or quashed that Harmes hurt his wrist whilst 'rehydrating'?

May - eye socket - test!

What, are they going to getHawkins up to whack it again?

Seriously, how does one test an eye socket?

And, Fritsch test too?

For once I do not envy the selectors

Needless to say Ben Brown and Sam Weideman are now available ? but it’s bad luck to Joel Smith who is a constant visitor to the list and Bailey Laurie, a newbie. Both due to be out for a while.

Injury List: Round 6

Bayley Fritsch (hand fracture) — Test

Steven May (eye socket) — Test

James Harmes (wrist) — 2 Weeks

Bailey Laurie (eye socket) — 6 Weeks

Joel Smith (knee) — 6 to 8 Weeks

Marty Hore (knee) — Season

Aaron Nietschke (knee) — Season

You've got to feel for Joel Smith. Has spent more time in the medical room than 3/4 of the team combined.

Can't see us retaining him.

And he was just about BOG before he got injured.

Yes he looked a cut above.

I am a believer in Joel Smith. Super quick and great endurance. The new rules are in his favour. Look how well players like Aliir, Hunt, Jiath and Howe are going. Hopefully he gets back and shows what he can do.

Needs to test clear by the doctor for the concussion he received. Also would probably need to see how his vision is going while training I’d guess.

incredible how quickly the eye heals up

Nothing wrong with his eye.  It was the bone.

If it was a serious bone injury he would have had surgery

I can't help but feel like if we were a proper organised football club in the late 00's/early 10's we would've had Joel Smith in a father son academy and developed his skills and body better. A touch of luck and better development at an early age and he might've been anything. Still time for him to get right and show something this year, I maintain he's too good for VFL level, but it just doesn't seem to be in his favour.

Also a shame to see Bill Laurie out for an extended period. I guess he gets a chance to build his body and keep his legs moving once everything settles down. I thought he could debut and even be a sneaky sub option this year, but like the rest of the guys who missed all of last year he needs some footy under his belt.

Weird that Laurie is out for 6 weeks with a fractured eye socket but May is out for 1-2.

Hibberd must have really knocked Laurie around.

Was hoping we might see Laurie get a run in the seniors before too long but not likely till at least well after the bye.

Laurie's behind Bedford and Chandler you'd reckon so although it's a pity he is injured, I don't think he would have played a senior game unless multiple injuries

I assume Steven May is made of titanium.

The two concussions in quick succession an issue, wonder if we'll end up with two players wearing helmets. I like to call Gus 'Helmet' at times, so this would just confuse everything.

A big injury blow for the Dogs with Josh Dunkley needing shoulder surgery and out for months.  And Lachie Neale will miss a few weeks to ankle surgery. And of course Dangerfield out for a while too.

Our rival contenders have copped some blows lately, fingers crossed we dont have to deal with anything too serious for the rest of the season. Maybe the preseason Brown and Weid injuries were our sacrifices to the injury gods.

Things can turn quickly but I think it says a lot about our fitness / conditioning staff that we've really only had collision injuries so far this season (a few other injuries preseason).

Where other coaches are saying the games are too long / the preseasons been too short etc, I feel like the players have supreme confidence in their fitness (and we've obviously had some luck too)

It’s getting a tough call given he’s hardly on the park. Looked shaky last year when given chances. Agree often too good for VFL and perhaps won’t get his body right for AFL.

This is speculative nonsense  - what is a father/son academy anyway and who has one ???

Pretty sure Joel  chased a basketball career early on and wasn't interested in football.

And who is Bill Laurie anyway ?

You don't think a few training sessions here and there couldn't have helped sway Joel towards footy? Basketball might've been his first sporting endeavour - like it was for Petracca, LJ and many others - but he could've come back to footy at 17 not 20 something. All it takes is a few junior games and the lure of a professional contract to change a lot of hearts and minds.

We've already got one Bayley/Bailey, so makes sense for Laurie to be Bill. If the players haven't nicknamed him that I'd be surprised.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #3 Christian Salem

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.
