I hope the club doesn't stand in his way if he wants a trade and we can only get peanuts in return.

The bloke clearly needs a fresh start to realise the talent that he possesses. You don't accidently have a 24 possession/7 mark/3 goal performance in a final under the Friday night lights in front of 90,000. He also kicked 2 in the following final.

However, it's not working at Melbourne. He was called in to hopefully be an able replacement for an inform T Mac and he couldn't produce, and it's happened far too often with him. The Freo game should've been a line in the sand game for him but it was more of the same unfortunately.

Unfortunately I think we tried to trade him last year but there were no bites.

If no one wanted him last year then no one is going to want him again this year.

I've thought for a number of years that he would make a good half-back

Or half Forward…
But last week was it for me. He is not a key forward

Ok, you trade him, and then who's our key forward depth next year?

The fact you're still harping on about his draft order says you don't understand where he sits within our list needs.

It's the old 'star or spud' mentality that footy fans without the patience or understanding of lists as a holistic picture don't seem to grasp.

Now you are making stuff up.  Please tell me where I quoted his draft order? I also never said he was a 'spud or star'.

Just tells me you can't see the wood for the trees. I commented on his attributes and his performance but you haven't addressed either of those as it doesn't suit your narrative,

And I would rather have Majak or M Brown or JVR if you must know.

Apologies if I assumed wrong, but labeling him "a bust" is surely in the context of his draft order yes? If he was picked in the 80s would you be labeling him the same? Doubt it.

I didn't say you did. I said it's a common mentality among Demonlanders to not understand the concept of list depth and a holistic list picture, not every player is going to be a gun or even regular best 22.

I've spoken of his place on our list and what the expectations should be on him given that.

You seem to be among the 'when will he break out/he's never gonna make it' brigade who have no comprehension of where Weid sits in the context of our key forward lineup and playing list. That's what you're missing mate. You're judging him against your own expectations, and given he was re-signed and has played games this year I would suggest your expectations do not align with the clubs.

I know it’s been tried before but not for long

Play him at CHB for a heap of games at Casey

What have we got to lose

It is starting to look like he will never make it as a forward

And he may gain some confidence

Absolutely OB I have said this before and get him moving around the ground not leave home one on one or in a pack.

So if we all need to re align our expectations, may I ask, with these lower expectations , how long should we persevere   ie keep playing or keep listed said player, it's only been 6 years. If you can't be bothered replying don't bother face palming either.

You'd keep him until either he no longer has a use on the list, he requests a trade for more opportunity or a better option is available. IMO he's never going to be a gun forward, he's never going to 'break out' and will never live up to his initial draft order, so people are just going to continue to get over the top frustrated about him until they realize that.

So what is his use on the list now?

because it is not as a Key Forward, and that was why he was drafted

He's a backup key forward/ruck.

He's played 6 games this year as such, averaging 1.5 goals, 3.2 marks and 1.2 tackles a game.

For reference, our primary key forward Ben Brown averages 1.9 goals, 3.4 marks and 0.5 tackles per game this year.

I mean, I get it's the internet and people like to make outlandish comments, but the overreaction about Weideman is silly.

No it’s not, and i will tell you why.
Sam has not grabbed his chances, not once in those 6 games, and i say that with a heavy heart. I want him to succeed, but it isn’t going to happen as a key forward. Last Saturday was the perfect scenario that he is kept as Back up and he could not stand up sadly

Yes it is.

You know he's kicked bags of 3 and 4 this year right? That's way overs for a backup forward, but according to you he's "not once" grabbed his chances.

"Last Saturday was the perfect scenario".... Seriously mate, what game were you watching? Our forward 50 entries were atrocious and in the second half we were absolutely smashed in the middle (9 centre clearances to 1 in the 3rd qtr alone). How did Ben Brown go?

You can’t expect to have magnificent delivery into the forward line all the time. Last Saturday was no different to any other game. Sam has to toughen up and go looking for the ball if it ain’t coming in on a plate.
start watching the game rather than regurgitating Stats

Please don’t compare Ben Brown to the Weid

8 hours ago, Lord Nev said:

IMO Weid just cops these over the top harsh judgments because people are still expecting him to 'break out' and be this gun key forward.

Can he just break out and be a normal forward who takes a couple of grabs, kicks a goal or two (maybe the occasional bag of 4 or 5), and makes his opposition defender work for his keep? As it is, we're playing a man short.

I am in the camp its 3 min to midnight on his career. he needs to find some niche pronto. Maybe that is defence where he can go at the ball and read the play. What else is there for him?

There used to be a separate but parallel competition that played its matches right before the main competition match. They used the same jumpers and everything. (If you were really keen you could get to the ground at about 9AM and see 3 games of footy.) If they brought that back, he could play in the match before the main one. Have an early shower, change into trackies and help cut the oranges at half time.

Oh dear, don't post any more coz of the constant negativity about players and coaches, thought it might change after last year      but sadly no, still the same posters who one handedly bag players the Club has signed and kept on the list,

Rather than post on here thought they may be better served applying for the vacancies at North, they seem to know better

Everybody is entitled to an opinion but repeating the same faults ad nauseum no matter the player is just tedious

He didn't lead at the ball once as far as I could tell. Maybe the time he marked it in the pocket. So gets very little separation and yet is terrible body on body,

Seemed to be in the same spots is BB

...

This is the best analysis so far I reckon, it's the first that notes actually issues.

He definitely looks best when moving around the ground and being able to get a few marks compared to standing still in packs. So why wasn't he leading?

Did we want him in the pack with Brown, so that Brown wasn't double teamed in every kick forward? This seems possible; a few times I thought Weid looked like he was trying to make space and body in the packs (from Brown) rather than actually contest the mark himself.

In those "good games" he was definitely roaming around more and he was able to run into the ball, or the pack, not have it kicked onto his head, which is a clear weakness. So I think we need to workout if he isn't moving around, or if our game plan isn't letting him.

Satyr surely if you been browsing here most of this year it hasn’t been negative. Most posters have been gloating that we are invincible.   Come back and use the ignore option.

If Sam is as bad as most posters on this thread believe then you needed worry, cause he won’t play in the ones again. And hopefully we will then be spared of future derogatory comments about Sam on here. It’s not a crime if you play poorly, nor is it if you are not a star - but you wouldn’t think that after reading this thread. I’m sure he would luv to be performing to your standards, but he hasn’t yet and maybe he can’t, so accept that. Don’t blame Sam (or any player in a similar position), blame the selectors for picking him. They obviously have no idea what they are doing.

Sam has had his chances to show what he can do as a forward. I still rate him as a player but, like many other forwards who failed to "click", would like to see if he can make it as defender facing the oncoming ball rather than having to wait for it.

Swans McCartin is a current example and footy history is replete with other examples. The rest of the year at Casey beckons.

Yep agree totally with this.

Half the side played poorly & only about 4 players earnt their pay.

Max & Jackson got pantsed, Lever turned it over repeatedly, Rivers was terrible, Brown was useless & ANB had a shocker, Dunstan was a wasted space but hey lets make it all about Weid.

I'm doubling down on the idea that Van Rooyen should be given an opportunity ahead of Weideman in future. McDonald comes straight in next week for Weideman providing he isn't still injured but if he is, it doesn't make sense to persist with Weideman over Van Rooyen considering only one of those two players has a chance to forge a successful career in Melbourne colours. One has been given ample opportunity at the top level and has repeatedly failed to capitalise and the other has been knocking the door down in the VFL regardless of his inexperience.

No

VR isn’t even close to ready

It's Game Day and the Demons return to the MCG to face the Tigers in their annual Blockbuster on ANZAC Eve for the 10th time. The Dees will be desperate to reignite their stuttering 2025 campaign and claim just their second win of the season. Can the Demons dig deep and find that ANZAC Spirit to snatch back to back wins?

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

A few years ago, the Melbourne Football Club produced a documentary about the decade in which it rose from its dystopic purgatory of regular thrashings to the euphoria of a premiership victory. That entire period could have been compressed in a fast motion version of the 2025 season to date as the Demons went from embarrassing basket case to glorious winner in an unexpected victory over the Dockers last Saturday. They transformed in a single week from a team that put in a pedestrian effort of predictably kicking the ball long down the line into attack that made a very ordinary Bombers outfit look like worldbeaters into a slick, fast moving side with urgency and a willingness to handball and create play with shorter kicks and by changing angles to generate an element of chaos that yielded six goals in each of the opening quarters against Freo.

  • NON-MFC: Round 07

Round 7 gets underway in iconic fashion with the traditional ANZAC Day blockbuster. The high-flying Magpies will be looking to solidify their spot atop the ladder, while the Bombers are desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top eight. Later that evening, Fremantle will be out to redeem themselves after a disappointing loss to the Demons, facing a hungry Adelaide side with eyes firmly set on breaking into the top four. Saturday serves up a triple-header of footy action. The Lions will be looking to consolidate their Top 2 spot as they head to Marvel Stadium to clash with the Saints. Over in Adelaide, Port Adelaide will be strong favourites at home against a struggling North Melbourne. The day wraps up with a fiery encounter in Canberra, where the Giants and Bulldogs renew their bitter rivalry. Sunday’s schedule kicks off with the Suns aiming to bounce back from their shock defeat to Richmond, taking on the out of form Swans. Then the Blues will be out to claim a major scalp when they battle the Cats at the MCG. The round finishes with a less-than-thrilling affair between Hawthorn and West Coast at Marvel. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Fremantle

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
