There would be half a dozen teams that would gladly take TMac off our hands. I have no doubt of that. Different story with OMac who I think could be part of a trade or, as his manager suggested, a delisted free agent. There are roles he could fill at the right club.

I do doubt that 'Jack'...maybe they would take him at a 'sale' (3rd rounder or lower & we cop most of the contract) price but not for a decent trade.

I hope you're right and I'm wrong by the way.

I'm not suggesting Tom stays but if there are no takers we don't have much choice so I'm ok with giving him another chance.

Tom is not the only one that has under performed his contract.  Two other notables this year are Melksham and Lever, also on good coin and contracted to 2022.  Like Tom, they had injuries in 2019 and for whatever reason failed to perform this year.  So on your line of thinking if they stay, they should take a pay cut, right?  Won't happen.

Fair point re Melksham. He was a major disappointment. If the club brought in a replacement I wouldn’t be unhappy.

I’m don’t think Lever’s form was that bad. Our defence was solid last year and I think he had his part to play in that.

Pay-cuts in contract never happen of course but I often think professional pride should play a part. I know I wouldn’t feel comfortable collecting my wage if I felt I hadn’t made a commensurate contribution (easy for me to say of course I’m not earning the big bucks).

Best for all parties - remarkable really is it mainly good for which parties ? The new team has a possibly underperforming Slowish big KPPlayer

Tom does not really want to leave I imagine but opportunity is the sole reason

And we want to get rid of his Salary in our Cap and have to gently guide him out of the Club he has been such a loyal servant and great Clubman who will be missed.

Seems like most reasons are not BEST but need to happen to try and break a deadlock.

I secretly hope Tom stays ( or isn't picked up) reduces weight and gets back to 2018 form in the forward  line Or wherever.

That would be the best fir all parties Tom and MFC.

Oh I suppose Oscar is in much the same position but the may be a genuine Best for  all Parties  EXCEPT fir the Oscar haters who may in his absence lord their poisoned chalices at Charlie or Smith or even ANB.

IF we were sat here next year and TMac had delivered a season on a par with 2018 I would be delighted and happily hold my hand up to admit I was wrong. Unfortunately that would be wishful thinking.

He doesn’t have a role in our forward set-up. Our defence was good this year so no spot there either. He has no place on our list therefore it doesn’t help TMac’s career hanging around. He will just stagnate further. Best for him to make a fresh start, in a new environment and hopefully he can show better form. I’d be very happy for him if he did.

McCartney sounded more interested in Hogan than T Mac when interviewed last week. T Mac sounded very much like an option if everything else fell over.

Price for Hogan will be interesting. Potentially gone from being worth a first and second round pick to an early third in the space of 2 years. Some depreciation.

Who are the Tmac suitors right now?

We've heard - Pies, Swans, Bombers, North - anyone else?

Matt Rendale on SEN suggest Melbourne should be all over Trelor suits our Midfield perfectly.

T Mac for Trelor and pies to pay 200k off Trelors contract per year remaining?

would do this in a heartbeat

I don't see why we aren't going after him? Oliver, Viney, Tracc and Treloar rotating through the midfield...

Absolutely wild thought

I don't care if he has a shocking kick - he can work on it

His hammies are pretty unreliable but we should at least take a look at him

although the other issue we have is our other wing right now so I get why he's not a priority

would just be nice to throw our hat in the ring for him because he has pace and him and Tracc would be super exciting together

With Essendon losing Joe Daniher and Ben Brown wishing to join Melbourne you would think they would be keen on Tom McDonald too?

Either way, it pushes up the asking price for Tom McDonald which is good for us if we do end up trading him or keeping him and playing him as a defender again. We have the advantage with this situation regarding Tom McDonald and we need to utilize it to benefit our list.

What do you normally pay for a coffee, $50.00?

I don't see the downside in having a chat with him

I would do it in a heartbeat if we can get him cheap and sort out his hammies

There is no way this happens.  Treloar is a salary cap dump for the Pies and TMac is a salary cap dump for MFC.

Collingwood will only take TMac if we're paying part of his salary.  They might do a straight swap if we take all Treloar's salary.

Tom McDonald is, reportedly, on roughly 700k a year.  Treloar is on 900k.

If they pay 200k of his salary and take back Tom McDonald then they don't really make any extra space in their cap for at least the next two years.

Not sure how the Pies are going to work it with their salary cap so tight already.

Now you are talking when you say, “ if we can get him cheap “.

What you originally said you would do in a heartbeat, is swap Tom Mac for him and pay all but $200k per year for 5 years. I would reject that in a heartbeat.

Agree no downside in chatting.

Shame on everyone for not calling this out. Treloar is worth a top 10 pick yet somehow you're saying tom McDonald and Treloar should be spoken about in the same sentence.

The only way that trade gets done would be Tom Mcdonald and our next years 1st rounder for Treloar. Give Treloar some bloody respect!!!

Yes, collingwood are sort of kicking him out, thats why he is worth a top 10 pick and not a top 3 pick.

His worth has fallen a lot more than Top 10. Give it another week and the Filth will start to get desperate.
They have blown the Salary Cap sky high

Only so long you can avoid paying the bulk of a contract

Collingwood is interested in TMac despite his salary, which can only mean one of two things: either they think/know we're going to be paying a significant portion of it, or they're prepared to wear it if other cards fall their way (e.g. Treloar, Phillips and/or Cox depart).

IMO the Treloar situation isn't just salary cap pressure, it's mismanagement from Collingwood that has blown up in their face (they held a possibly genuine concern about how he would perform with his partner and child in Queensland and weren't sure he could commit to staying in Melbourne. They've then poorly responded to Treloar telling them he disgreed and wants to stay).

Hard to make those sums work.

Would have made for interesting discussion if Viney had gone to Geelong but short of trading Brayshaw which I don't support....mmmm..nah

Must say my respect for Freo has gone up now we hear about all the triggers in Hogan's contract. Other clubs including ourselves could take lessons.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
