Your gilding the lily ww.

Goodwin got us into a crap position by refusing to players in there correct positions and Why was Weideman left out of the first 5 games when he clearly wasn't injured.

He showed for the past few weeks why he was left out.

We have more speed in the team in Kozzy hunt baker and langdon

brown tomlinson baker and kozzy are good field kicks

vdb too slow

melksham minimal impact except at the death

anb for his running

We are finishing about where we deserve to finish on the season's efforts. Didn't see much of the game today but 26 tackles is a disappointing number...especially being -17 vs Essendon. If the tackle count was swapped we win by 60+ points.

Eagles would be licking their chops if Freo knock off the Dogs...facing the team sitting dead last for tackles in a final won't raise too many concerns...

Got lazy, tried to coast through the second half, intensity dropped so Essendon took advantage.at the moment Weideman is giving us no more thanTMac was.

Nailed it. Altough Anb was mia 2nd half. I think he was injured.

Brown is no longer 2nd tier.

ANB was a gem in the first half and  helped set us up  he had back spasms and struggled to come back on.

I won't argue the point with Brown l like him  since he has been back looks a better player than when he was at  ESS.

Yes agree somewhat. I wonder if he can fit down back say for Smith    ( Cringe )

Melksham’s tackle attempts were more infuriating than the Ess comeback. The tackle attempt late in the game on the outer wing was pathetic.

Ha just had a scroll through bomberblitz and they are going on about mitch brown and typical that he plays his best game against his former club and who got rid of him.

He had 13 marks and 20 disposals and 6 score involvements. Not sure if he wanted to show something in case he thought it could be his last game but I'd back him in next year.

Up there with the Goodwin 4 year signing and Tomlinson for 4 years @ $500K ?

That’s right Buzzy, have a shot at Goodwin.  If we don’t make finals we nevertheless win 9/8. Means Goody has a favourable win / loss ration three years out of 4. What were the coaching records  of Hardwick, Bomber Thompson  and even Clarkson after 4 years.

tell me  Buzzy and all you Goodwin knockers— what precisely is wrong with his  Coaching ? He  did  make one awful blunder in team selection for the Freo match but otherwise I’ve seen little wrong   And Buzzy you are not happy about Tomlinson.. I’m not excited either. But I’m VERY excited about Langdon, Jackson, Kosi and Rivers. If u want to blame Goodwin for Tomlinson how do you rate his other three selections . And I rate the fact that the players rate him

Really should have dee-stroyed them today.

A few thoughts.

Really happy for Hunt and his goals today.

Melksham, looking at his stats this year he's had an awful time.

Rivers is a find.

Clarry is so much better when he takes a step and assesses rather than just going for the handball.

I don't know what is happening with Jack but as soon as he takes a mark he takes eons to dispose of the ball (makes it worse when we have players out and he doesn't look right to see them). He just let's the opposition set up.

Spargo could be alright (I'm happy to be wrong about him).

May should be AA.

9th is about right for this team, we look good for parts of games but can't string it together (our goal kicking is shocking).

GO FREO!

Should've played much earlier and we would have had a better idea of his abilities.

To be fair to Goodwin and the team, out of defence they are more patient and hawthorn like with small kicks

it’s not manic fwd hand pass rolling mauls as before so much

Rivers will be a star, saved the game on multiple occasions. Marty Hore is probably the ideal long-term replacement for Smith who just doesn’t look like defender.

The fact that Goody didn’t trust a contested beast like Harmes in the middle all year but puts his lazy buddy Melksham in a run-with role on a whim is damning.

Hopefully Jesse Hogan kicks 10.

What an uninspiring end to the season. We don't deserve to play finals.

Not only is there a mental fragility to this group, but Goodwin can't get them going.

Fancy needing to play one good quarter of footy, going into three quarter time with a handy lead and then the running stops and we go safely down the line. If it's not the players naturally going into their shells, it's Goodwin's coaching.

It was such a typical facile Melbourne performance. Petracca, Oliver, Langdon, May, Lever, Salem and Hunt were great. Fritsch struggled to finish off the good work up ahead of him and it almost cost us the game, until he finally finished off the goal from 10m out.

Loved the few glimpses of Kozzie today. He just had a little bit more cleanness that was noticeable. Rivers is fast becoming one of my favourites. Not only does he show great composure for a guy who's played 9 games, but he brings the tackle pressure. That tackle at a crucial moment basically won us the game.

Our outside run in combination with their lack of defensive set up was good for three quarters. Our tackle pressure in the first half was really good and then dropped away, as if we couldn't be bothered, and as if we know that the Dogs will win tomorrow.

I think I've seen enough now. If the club wants to sack Goodwin, I'll back them. We have enough good players, but the team as a whole switches off and when it's not allowed to play the game on its own terms all of a sudden within games, our guys don't know what to do. We've managed to eventually get games on our terms that have started by not being on our terms, but if we lead a game and then the opposition makes changes, we don't know how to counter it by trusting our system.

Max talked about 'maturity' at the end of the game. That wasn't maturity. We completely went away from trusting the system and almost lost the game. I think we need changes.

Not quite true. I generally agree with @titan_uranus on Smith in that he's not a footballer, but he actually made a number of good spoils and rebounded off his man a number of times in the first three quarters. I wouldn't have him in my team, but he probably played his best defensive game ever today.

I usually agree with you @A F but not on this. I thought Smith was hopeless at every turn. He's continually out of position on transition, which means he doesn't read the play and/or gets sucked too far up the ground. He gets beaten in one-on-ones. He had 5 touches and 1 mark, so he wasn't giving us drive or intercept marks (by comparison - Lever had 10, Hibberd 10, May 7, Tomlinson 7, Salem 6). And he's not damaging with the ball, and indeed his one handpass for the day was straight to a Bomber.

It was, as far as I'm concerned, a shocking game.

As to your other post, I'm not sold on Goodwin either, but I'm not sure you can put the fourth quarter down to Goodwin. I'm far more confident putting it down to our players going conservative, thinking that if we slowed the game down we'd take the heat out of it. We started playing to protect our lead rather than to score. Maybe part of that's Goodwin's responsibility but I'm more confident putting it at the feet of the players.

Mitch brown 20 disposals and 13 marks..  this is the guy who was out of the side all season when we have been crying out for a big forward.

Our selection committee is pure rubbish.

Yet another example in a bad year or a bad series of bad selections that many of us were screaming about. It was obvious, two games and he has his mojo back again - a valuable player. The chosen reflection, week after week, against OUR will was the Weed - who still is not producing. Then Dl contributors see Weed kick two goals in a single game - a massive contribution - and suddenly he's a star quality earning a guernsey to look busy but do nothing really, in a sinecure,  week after week.

Fair call.

He has struggled past 2 seasons which ever way you slice it.

But he has certainly  been good in the last few games hes played. Hard at ball...runs hard and knows where the goals are.

Clearly has been played in wrong positions.

Agree with all of this. I don’t think he’s a natural defender at all but defensively speaking he looked more assured today than he has in the past. The quality of opposition has to be factored into that though.

Still only 7 possessions (4 goals a great effort though), but his biggest issue is that when he goes missing he may as well be in another state. He needs to find the ball more, maybe that comes from be switched up a lot but whatever it is he doesn’t get enough of it.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
