The MFC should be protesting loudly at this. ANB should publicly ask the AFL why he gets suspended for an action which accidentally caused injury to the head when big Mummy is only finned for an action which quite intentionally did. It's likely he'd cop another fine for bringing the game into disrepute, within the ironical context of the AFL in effect bringing it into disrepute through it's blatant double standards and failure to protect players from gutless snipers like Mummy. Nah we need Mumford out their belting the Saints this week haha 1 1 1 Quote
PaulRB 6,436 Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 While I’m not a fan of Mummy or the heavy hits he was dishing out, I like that he did it, and we soaked it up and still won the game. For those of us who can recall the 2000 GF, we know that the gloves can come off in the big game, so I’d prefer our guns learn to soak it up and win the game than go into our shell and expect the umps or tribunal will protect us. Personally, would have preferred some of the boys flew the flag, but the modern game doesn’t allow such distraction, especially when it’s close. 1 Quote

They were certainly laughing about it and not taking it seriously. Then again the AFL don't take it seriously by their own actions. Sure they talk a good game when it comes to wanting to stamp out gut punches and sling tackles and making the head sacrosanct but they always fail to follow up with sanctions that would deter that behaviour. It was quite bizarre the way the commentators were laughing about it, like he’s just a knockabout larrikin. 3 1 Quote

Pathetic he has not copped more criticism, though unsurprising given footy media is dominated by ex footballers who are almost meat heads - meat heads who instinctively say no case to answer for every hit. But there is some justice. In game decided by 5 points Mumford gifted us a goal when the ball was clear of our 50 and IIRC another he gave away on the wing ended with a goal being kicked (i think) top obs Bin - Mumford allowed by AFL to bring game into disrepute Time for in-game Bin Time I detest Mumt**g Quote

sue 9,277 Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 It's depressing that this happens over and over. We can rely of the AFL/tribunal to be breathtakingly inconsistent and the commentators to get sexually excited over a bit of biffo. Have the commentators ever called it out as a bad example to kids? 2 Quote

Redleg 42,181 Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 (edited) Why are we all upset? He only hit 3 Dees players and we know he is clumsy. TBH it is easy to mistake a bald head for a footy, even though it is attached to a neck and has ears sticking out the sides. Clayton’s jaw does look like a footy and his ribs are a good spot to rest your knees when you crash into him. It is not like Mumford is a co - ordinated athlete who is supposed to go after the footy. Probably doesn’t happen if one of our clumsy players of the past like Grinter, Biffen or Big Carl we’re playing. All we can do to retaliate these days is to swing tackle, oh wait a minute. In the Kossy run from half back, when vanders passed to Kossy, VDB then stepped between a running Mumford and Kossy, Mumford gave up the chase, was never going to catch him in any case. Then the Kossy hand pass to Weid then to Spargo for the goal I think. From the vanders hand ball the pressure was gone once Mumford conceded. But Kossy speed had them undone anyway. 1 Quote

He sure dished it out on Saturday. It reminded me of the old lawless days when most sides had a hit man. The other thing I noticed is that Langdon simply plays old fashioned footy. He runs, he's great at finding space and when he gets it, he kicks it, the way Brian Dixon used to. I do wish, however, the lad would aim a bit straighter. Noted and agreed. Them was the days .... Dicko style. We could do a little more of that and my pick for so doing would be Tomlinson on the other wing. He's already finding space but is ignored on the kick-ins from Full Back. The 'kick to Gawn' syndrome will be our undoing, sadly. Already opponent sides are working Gawn over when he is in the backline. Quote

The reality of the 'hit you from behind Mumford' in that part of the play is that AVB scared the shXX out of Mumford with presence alone - Mumford was experiencing the AVB stare on the move and knew what would happen if he did anything untoward. 1 1 Quote

I used to love watching Grinter, Biffin, Ditterich, Pickett and Vanders dedicate their football efforts to the mighty MFC against all comers. We were penalised heavily then, and penalised now for any excuse that the AFL weak-links can come up with. However, I'd still like to see a little more 'mongrel' in our team these days, rather than being generally swept aside or bashed to death at critical points of a game. We need to make a science of the mongrel plays - of particular note in this regard was Neitz. Now that man was subtle but ever so effective. 1 Quote
Marty 419 Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 Mummy gifted us the game with 2 excellent goal assists. It was 4 high hits that I seen and there would have been more. Gawn and Clarry hits. Rivers 1st goal was a swinging arm to the back of the head...I mean shepherd. Trac’s goal. Was a late high hit...I mean attempted tackle on Fritta on the wing. Commentators were encouraging it. From memory they said. ” Mummy is giving up height, agility, class pretty much everything to Gawn so what would you do” ”I would be raising the elbows and hitting Gawn hard, inflicting as much as I could on him” they were cheerleading it in the first couple of minutes of the game. 3 1 Quote

John Crow Batty 8,893 Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 The incident didn’t seem to worry Max too much. He and Mummy had an amiable chat after the game. The main reason why these incidents continue is that the AFL continue to let them happen. It only takes an unlucky blow to cause permanent brain damage. I imagine things will change when the next John Greening like incident happens and the law gets involved. 2 Quote
