Do mids get the ball to wingers much these days? Rarely at centre bounces. Maybe less so at around the ground stoppages where the winger often covers the back.

Backlines that win the ball get it to wingers folding back. May had an instant connection with Langdon. And forwards that create pressure so hack kicks go to the waiting wingmen too.

The biggest appeal to Smith could be that second scenario. Langdon either marked or had the ball running inside 50 enough times to kick 10+ goals this year. He finished with 2 goals 8.

Yeh, they do.

tom morris reckons that the hawks are 2 years plus a trigger for a third, whereas ours is a straight up three year offer - although i thought there was some speculation that third year was a combo of playing / coaching

Be very careful with recruiting yesterday's player

We have had trouble understanding today’s player let alone prognosticating tomorrows player. So maybe yesterday is where we should be heading - 4th dimensionally speaking.

I'm non committal on the guy but if the issue is all about the guarantee of a third year and not money then why can't we just front end his contract to pay him what he's likely to be worth to us over the next 24 months ? The only contention with year 3 then might be about whether he's taking up a valuable list spot.

That's probably true but you can easily be seduced by what a player did in the past, in a great team,  when he was younger.

Mark Stevens on channel 7.

Isaac Smith certain to leave Hawthorn with Melbourne leading the chase.

Gives us what we need, skill level, leadership and the ability to play wing.

Dees have a habit of over paying with long contracts to get players into the club. Not sustainable if you want success.

Lock it in Eddie!

no idea.. not exactly exciting, but can't be excited by every player.. hey we DID get tomlinson last year.

Anyone who doesn't want Smith on a wing for the next couple of years (or three) really is clueless about football.

Makes even more sense if the club allows Jetta to chase more playing time at the Pies.

He would replace everything in terms of experience and professionalism that you would lose with Jetta, and he is also going to give us better on field service than what Jetta could in the next few years (and that's not a criticism of Nev either).

Hopefully we can get this over the line!

I reckon this might mean we go for Phillips and trade him with Jetta. Be interesting to see.

Didn't think of that part.  Obviously it wouldn't be a straight swap, but if they're keen then it could definitely be done.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
