Unrestricted free agent. Two year deal is like offering a retirement fund.  It would have to be performance based surely.
I’m still in the “ No “ camp but it depends on whether we think we can get a Polec or a Phillips across to solve the left side wing position.

The trade desk just mentioned we have given him a 2 year deal.

No they didn't. They said he was seeking a 2 year deal from Hawthorn, and other clubs were sniffing around. They said Melbourne were probably the strongest of those showing interest, but they certainly did not say we had given him a 2 year deal.

Makes much more sense.

Retirement homes are a destination as well

Jordan Lewis: You’ll love it at Melbourne Smithy, they’ll pay you way more than at the Hawks and give you an extra year or two. Plus, you just have to stand on the ground and point. The only down side is there’s no toilets at training.

What is the obsession with only recruiting players if they are part of 'our future' or our 'next premiership'?

Players that join a club bring things with them when they arrive and leave things behind when they leave. This team requires leadership.

He has been a good leader at a good club and still plays at a high level. Even for one season, surely, you take that opportunity.

The only valid argument might be that he takes the place of a young player but we're not exactly over-encumbered with talented young wingmen.

We should go hard for Ben Brown and Polac, both have 3/4 years good footy left in them. How can the club tell us they want to build a team to make multiple finals and win one, then bring in a 32 year old(Smith,) for a season. Looks like we are getting desperate

Depends on who the player is.

In this case, Smith still has something to give and he could be a handy addition to the side.  We need to remember that, the last time we played finals, Jordan Lewis was a big part of it.  Smith could do the very same thing.

He could also be great for someone like Oskar Baker in terms of development.

Not a 32 year old.

Baker ?

Smith has at least one more year left. It wouldn't be big money. He'd be looking at years in terms of security. So he takes a list spot up in year 2 or 3 (yeah, I'd look at a 3rd year trigger), his experience will still be invaluable.

I'm with @Patches O’houlihan. I'd be going Gunston too.

Totally agree, can't believe some of the garbage people are talking here. Lewis was bloody good for us to have while building a young team. We didn't have the experience he had, so we literally brought it in.

Clarko will be laughing his head off. I reckon they offered a cheap 2nd year knowing he was probably out the door, pushes another club into committing overs. Gets them more compo

FMD didn't we learn anything from giving Lewie one year too many?

If we do this, we will be suckers

If, if by chance Viney were to leave as a RFA, this Smith UFA recruitment would destroy any compo we might get for Jack. Surely the club know what they are doing?!!! Or does a UFA not attract compo anymore? I'm not sure

Jack better stay!

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    TURNAROUND by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons won their first game at home this year in the traditional King’s Birthday Weekend clash with Collingwood VFL on Sunday in a dramatic turnaround on recent form that breathed new life into the beleaguered club’s season. The Demons led from the start to record a 52-point victory. It was their highest score and biggest winning margin by far for the 2024 season. Under cloudy but calm conditions for Casey Fields, the home side, wearing the old Springvale guernsey as a mark of res

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
