“You look at (Joel) Smith and (Braydon) Preuss and (Toby) Bedford and (Alex) Neal-Bullen and (Oskar) Baker – they’re just average players in, what now has to be seen to be, an average footy club. And the ladder suggests that.”

Spot on

The scary thing is, Goodwin will find room for all of them in next weeks team too.

I think it's pretty clear he changed the game plan from an 18 man aggressive press to a different style, but whatever. I think the players have brought a horrible inconsistency to this year, but I have to admit, the system is completely out of whack, when you can have 6 or 7 players regularly not registering a tackle and that's even if we're winning.

It's not throw the baby out with the bath water time IMO, but we need to sort out some areas.

FORWARDLINE

We need to really look at our forwardline over the off season. We need to get genuine goal kickers in there. It's not going to do, to simply have pace, or have pressure. We actually need goal kickers to keep the scoreboard ticking. Weideman is a tick for this year, but has faded in the last two games when there hasn't been an adequate foil for him. So Jackson or Petty needs to play.

MIDFIELD

We need to examine the dynamics in midfield. I've said it before, I wouldn't be against letting Viney walk as a FA, but we won't. So get him forward or get him playing differently in midfield. We need to get Harmes in there too, it's ridiculous. And I think Angus needs to be in there as well. I don't know what to do with Max. He's clearly carrying something, but he's been terrible since he's been back. I'd even consider trading him (I'll wait for the backlash on that one). Need to work hard on those stoppage set ups and the way we move the ball from midfield to attack.

BACKLINE

The backline needs to shed Oscar McDonald and Joel Smith, but otherwise I think we've got a really solid group to work with back there. It's the one area of the ground I'm comfortable with. May, Lever, Salem, Rivers, Hibberd, Lockhart, Petty and Tomlinson. I'd have all those guys in my team.

We need 4-6 more elite players. Not Petty, Bedford, Smith, Oscar McDonald, Baker, Dunkley, Chandler, Fritsch, Brown, Hore, Hunt, Pickett, Wagners, Jordon, Kolodjasnij, Nietzsche, Bradtke or other fringe VFL players, or spuds that other clubs have rejected after years of failure. And they can stop kicking it so often to packs. Just because Gawn is in the pack quite often doesn’t make it a great strategy.

The worry for me is I had us finishing10-12 this year. My feeling was based on a combination of the list and coach and game plan. So, I  a layman supporter, like others here are either better judge of our club talent and coaching  or a fluke artist. I will go further, without significant change next year will be 12-18.

Too busy getting into twitter tirade with Brad Green and James Magner.

What?! No he’s not, surely. Is he defending the players/coach?

I actually find this interesting.

I feel like, win or loss, the club has live tweeted press conferences for years now.

Why stop tonight?

The club employees mobile was very slippery from the blustery, wet and humid conditions in the press room. Poor bugger kept dropping it and ineffectually knocking it on and into opposition media teams who kept snapping it up easily and passing it around the back of the media room while laughing in our persons face and saying “na na na nan you can get it back”. It was a horrible scene but our person had some really strong learnings to come out of it, along with a wedgie so not all roses.

Just watched Trac’e interview with Ben post game. What concerns me most is they know why/how they lost but don’t know why they didn’t do what was required to win. That’s pretty scary

Sure - I get it. I'm hurting too. I'm not happy about how they fell away against two mediocre teams either.

But was I happy with where we sat, all things considered, before the last two matches? Absolutely.

Not out there tonight, and players who were a big part of our 2018 success: Tom Mac, Jetta, Jones. Also, don't underestimate the loss of Lewis. That's a lot of experience/talent that has not been replaced.

So what? Since then we've recruited May Lever Langdon Tomlinson. I think it's rubbish and letting them all off the hook, players and coaches.

Freo played with good system. We played with none. They made zero changes we made 7.

We are spent. The season is a joke. Living in hubs, 4 days breaks, Dees travelling every game and playing on tier 2 grounds. The boys have had enough. They will look forward to getting back to their own beds.

Be interesting to see our off field moves heading into 2021. List needs some tinkering and just wonder if we will trade out someone unexpected. We need to change our mix. I am going to back Goody in.

Wake me up round 1 2021

Everyone is spent. Everyone has had it tough. Most of us in Victoria don’t have the luxury of still getting paid six figures, living in the sunshine with our loved ones, and being able to hang out with our mates.
They would be doing it a lot tougher if they weren’t footballers, but ordinary people living in Melbourne.
These pathetic excuses are wearing thin for me. They’re in the same boat as every other club, and they’re doing it a lot easier than 6 million other Victorians!

Got so angry last night the TV was off before three quarter time. Our dog hides in the corner as soon as he hears footy commentary, but it got so much for him he hid in the bedroom. Poor fella. Think I might giving watching footy a spell until next season.

Couple of questions about the game:

- did we ever switch play, or even try to? I don't think i saw it once

- did we just leave the middle of the ground empty except for centre bounces? Freo seemed to go through there many times without a single one of our players anywhere near

I do not know what to think of the club at the moment. My membership will continue next year, but I will not be paying the Grand Final Guarantee as what is the point?

Pre-season training should include sessions with the footy covered in Vaseline so the players are able to handle a greasy ball as it was a fumble fest last night. Freo seemed to either have Grippo on their hands, or they just know how to be clean in all conditions.

The fact that we started Fritsch as an extra down back was bad enough (isn’t that Lever’s role?), the fact that Langdon, our only winger started down the wrong wing and played there for nearly the whole game, is a mind boggling coaching move that was so revolutionary it made no sense.

It's all well and good to say that we need better players, not sub par/VFL standard etc. players.

This doesn't just happen through high draft picks and expensive trades. There simply isn't the supply of players that are both quality and available, not to mention you generally need to pay over the odds to prise players from another club.

So the key is to develop what you have and/or draft strategically and place elite development resources and support structures around the players.

The great sides of the last 20-ish have all done this in a sustainable way - Geelong, Hawthorn, Sydney, Richmond (?)

That's true moneyball, and I don't see us doing this.

Goodwin's game plan relies on the individual brilliance of some highly touted players - Petracca, Oliver, Gawn, May.

So when they stink it up or are well held there isn't the depth or game structure to adapt.

Spot on re Langdon. He's probably our only shining light from the last couple of weeks, yet was played out of position

Opting for Preuss deep in the forward line in the torrential rain, not to mention selecting him over Brown is another.

This seems like a coaching panel clutching at straws.

The mind boggles.

Interested in people's thoughts on this stat (if it hasn't been shared already):

I'm well past excuses, but would love to know how other teams stack up with this.  9 games in 43 days, when generally you would average 9 over 60 or so, is a tough ask.

but all the wins havent been full squad performances and i think thats the key message from all the posters regardless of how they express it. we arent getting enough from our bottom 10 each week and thats whats the difference between top sides and where we are

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
