There will be egg on the face in this thread. And unlike regular face-egg the traces will last forever on the internet. Wasn't on Pickett at draft time but fully invested now. I got it wrong. Talylor and co. got it right. Will be a star of the AFL. 

He wins the ball with a plan to use it, that's almost half the battle. 

Doesn't get any favours with the umpires either, constantly held and often hit high when he's attacking the ball not ducking.

Got to get his crumbing timing right and his conversion. Big issues but not fatal flaws.

The pressure and the way he can track the ball in tight are legit, everything else can be worked on.

Looked confident tonight. Great to see him more involved in the play. Give me Pickett & Riv over another inside mid any day...

He played a bit more high up the field around the midfield I though. Made us look really slick and quick around the ball. This is one great example.

Ryan also debuted at the age of 21. Pickett is only going to get stronger with better endurance and composure within a game plan. To play at your best under last nights pressure shows a clear talent who can play to the occasion. I look forward to seeing where he takes it. 

Interestingly, we now can’t finish lower than 10th (unless there is a percentage battering next week). So the pick we gave up in the trade with North will be 9 or higher. 2-3 academy players very likely to be top 5 or 6, pushing it out to at least 11. Looking like astute trading in the end.

Kid needs another Pre season or two. That bit from hell and back where he was straggling and the fact he doesn't run out games shows me he hasn't the tank yet. 

 

but he is coming. Has some things we lack. Burst of speed and a flat hard kick
 

the other nice bit of work was his goal where he started in the back 50 and finished it with a goal line snag.

Thats all true DD but you make a fool of yourself by judging 1st year players when we won't know  who got it right for probably 5 years down the track.  Comparing 18 y o Pickett to 23 y o Liam Ryan is absurd.

So far the consensus (except for a couple of posters here) of media, coaches & supporters is that our current draftees are outstanding.

There are a lot of academies etc. don't be surprised if its about pick 15 in the end. 

The trade eventually included  Rivers. But we gave up our second round pick as part of the North trade. We could have used that pick on Rivers

So it really is Pickett vs Serong. Rivers should not be included when evaluating the individual trade.

We couldn't have got the first rounder to select Pickett if we didn't first give up the 2nd rounder to North first before getting it back.

It's Serong
vs Pickett and Rivers
vs  Rivers and a first rounder this year.

Unless you include all sorts of other factors like taking Jackson and not recruiting Langdon there's no way we could've got Serong and Rivers.

I'm not sure what the fuss is about here.  Serong's a mid forward.  Had Goody played Harmes in his usual role here this season we'd be getting this sort of Serong style output from him and this topic wouldn't be on the table.

Sure, Serong's a little goer with a ready made tank / bod ready to go at this level.  IF you knew Goody was effectively gonna kill off Harmes career/impact through the middle and up forward this season then in hindsight Serong might have been the better pick.

Kozzy's a completely different role player.  We wanted X factor from a small forward as we were all complaining we had the ok KFs (in theory in T-Mac & Weid, maybe cameos from Brown/Maxy) but no genuine small crumbers with goal kicking X factor.

Like most rookies Kozzy's a WIP and it will ve a few seasons before we really have some idea of where he's at.

And who knows what happens to Serong in his 2nd and subsequent seasons once he's marked for better quality match ups.  2nd year blues and all that.

Hopefully they both go down as super players.

I thought Kozzie's best effort was when he received the tap from Hunt for the goal.

What wasn't picked up on, was that he was a part of the turnover in the defensive 50 and busted [censored] to run the entire length of the ground to be on the receiving end of that tap that eventually led to the goal.

If he didn't make such an effort to run the entire ground, that goal probably doesn't eventuate. 

Could easily have kicked 3 goals on the night. If he had nailed those shots we would have lauded what a full performance it would have been.

I can see him going berserk in a game next year where he kicks about 3 or 4 goals in a quarter and turns it on.

Still so much developed to go, but he's coming along just fine.

Just a guess but probably because Taylor is an experienced national recruiter and I watch three minute highlights packages once a year.

When was the last time we've seen a Demon hit the contest like that, burn off four opponents on the way out and connect up the field with the old one two finish for a goal?  The closest i've seen might be Harmes when he's on playing through the middle and breaking a tackle or two.  Usually the finish doesn't quite work out so well though!
