Obviously there's confirmation bias at play but the top 13 in the betting market have all been nominated. The first without one is Bailey Scott at $81 which really should be $8001.

Very rarely is there a Rankine like performance and especially later in a season when most of the standouts have been nominated. The impact of betting alone means the AFL won't let a genuine contender go without a nomination as the season rolls towards the 20 week mark.

The most likely case is a chronically underrated key defender who doesn't get a lot of stats but these days key defenders are racking up intercept marks and possessions so it really won't be an issue.

It's not the worlds best design award by any means but that doesn't mean the best player from those eligible won't get a nomination at some stage.

The far greater concern is the impact the media and group think has on the award and the judges. Serong $1.50 and Anderson $4 despite nearly identical seasons is a great example of it.

Agreed. I’m really surprised there is that much difference in the betting. Anderson has been very good and I’d argue, actually significantly better than Serong.

Heart in mouth, maybe with more experience and some excellent development and encouragement, we may have another Hardeman coming along. For me, Gary was the best CHB I have ever seen, and since then, we have had quite a few greats in that position. He is not a Neitz, but smaller like Hardeman and has that poise coming along, nicely.Ā

If he gets anywhere near Gary's status i won't be complaining 56

We were robbed again?

next year Rivers will get a better award when we win the flag?

Will he still be eligible? I forget what the maximum amount of games you can play is.

Ā To be eligible for nomination, the player must be aged 20 or under on 1 January that year, and have played ten or fewer AFL games as of the start of the season.[9]Ā A player can only be nominated once per season; if a player is suspended during the season, he may be nominated, but will not be eligible to win the award.[

Dont care if he wins tbh. Kids gonna be a star anyway.

Totally agree, he’s a really smoothĀ user and while the winning goal may have not been exactly what he wanted his fist goal looked beautiful off the boot.Ā

I guess the good news is rivers is still eligible next year...Ā

Unless we make finals this year

He's got something specialĀ this kid....

Again he stood up when the pressure was on.

His contest then tackle in the last stopped their run on & helped turn the game back in our favour.

He lifted when we needed him.

Ā

looks a player. could fix his disposals up a bit just like the rest of the team but he brings much needed speed.

His 14 touches v Dons is probably a shade short of what’s required. Lauchlan Sholl of Adelaide who got shafted last week picked up 19 possessions v Tigers.

It's his defensive efforts that have won me over. He really seems to get thoseĀ smothers, tackles, blocks, taps, etc in at the right time, and then to double it down his few disposals have been very clean andĀ penetrating.

To get the three young kids all playing some exciting footy in their first year, is a big take away from this year.

Riv is playing great footy. Would love him to put on a bit more muscle and hopefully get some midfield time next year

This is a long bow but Rivers has a game not a million miles away from the great Gavin Wanganeen. I'd like Rivers to develop his game along those lines. That much needed spring off half-back but the capacity to provide a meaningful presence in the midfield or up forward. Whether he gets nominated for a Rising Star is, for mine, probably neither here nor there. The football world recognise him as a talent.

What about his tackle in the last 2 minutes. Ā Stop another bombers centre clearances and spilled footy went to Melksham to Fritsch to kick the relieving goal.Ā

Doesn’t need a lot of muscle, needs a tank. The 16 minute quarters have helped him. Needs to match his mate Jackson once they get back to Perth over summerĀ

Did we sign Rivers up for a few extra years ? Ā I’m offering him 5 year deal right now. Ā

No

Get the lad a pen. When I watch the finals, he is a player that can stand up in the heat of the action. Only about a dozen of our current group have the finals intensity. Ā Rivers is one already.Ā

Was surprised Jackson won best young player ahead of Rivers. Jacko might have a higher ceiling, but Rivers clearly performed better this season.

West Coast apparently keen on luring Rivers back to WAĀ in the coming years. We’ll need to lock him away!

I was surprised too.

Jackson played 3 less games and only played well against the bottom 4 sides.

Rivers played a brilliant game against GWS in a mini elimination prime time Saturday night game, including kicking the sealer.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven MayĀ

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
